  • Where has this been all my life ????!!!!!! I thot that I was semi-well-versed

in Classics ... Arturo gives his soul . We are made whole . To further it along .

    Selah

  • I don't agree. I think the Hostias is beautifully sung here. This was Giuseppe di Stefano in his prime, when he could still sing gorgeously. Of course, it goes without saying that Cesare Siepi is glorious. Herva Nelli and Fedora Barbieri are no slouches, either. Of course, the real star of all this is Verdi's music. And speaking as a singer, I love the tempi Toscanini took here.

  • Pippo tried his best piano, it is not one, tempi is too fast, other soloists are good but I can not feel the hostias, sorry

  • The tempi are just a little slower than the metronome markings on the Ricordi score, What does a hostias feel like?

But on a more serious note, Toscanini was a conductor who was very much concerned with the composer's intentions and tried very hard to clean up the excesses and sloppiness that had come with so much 'tradition'. In this sense he was a modern conductor and we owe a lot to him today in terms of technical excellence. His rigour may seem too much at times, but taken in context.....

  • Dodon thanks, I must agree with you even after repeatedly listening to this recording someway I miss that human mourning on a definitive and fatal destiny or loss of a loved one, it is personal as this is my favourite work's most cherished part I'm going to listen it a couple of more times

  • Even here, Toscanini was expansive in the Hostias 4:02 but much more so and more flexible in the 1938 BBC (with Roswaenge, who was a great Verdi tenor).
