Oooooh yeeeeaahhh... that's my private instructor... i am not worthy....
....I want to know who the hell gave this video a thumbs down rating....... probably somebody who was pissed off because they couldn't groove like this.
I don't know who's talking about the sax, but um, in that soprano solo, what he's doing is approaching harmonics your average player wouldn't - albeit, he sort of flutters around it, and yes, it might not groove (not saying it does, either, myself) but still, there's room in jazz still for experimentation - what you expect, always to hear some Bird-influenced licks or something? I think Trane woulda gave the man an ear at least.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ça malade!!!VIVE LE JAZZ VIVE LA SOULMUSIC!!
@haveatomato You gotta be crazy saying some mess like that! Are you kidding me?!! Roy Hargrove is one of the most versatile trumpeters out there. He'll burn it up on bebop, cool it down with cool jazz and mix it up with a little funk. I have an album of Oscar Peterson's where Roy's the trumpeter in the group, and he held his own. Give the man his credit, not only is he a good trumpeter, but he's a damn good musician!
I don't know. I've replayed it a few times and I really can't be sure whether to take it seriously! I've just gotta assume he meant to play it like that. I don't think it quite works though.. At least not how Miles' thing did. I hear what you're saying though.
You all are narrow minded. You have all what a stereo-typical sax solo is supposed to sound like. He is bringing a new sound. Trying out different things, exploring the sax.
Wasn't Common in this song in the Hardgroove album? So why isn't he here? I mean I thought it was called Common Freestyle because Common was FREESTYLIN in that song.
Buckshot Lefonque (Branford Marsalis, DJ Premier, plus a rotating group of instumentalists) had a rapper named 50 as their lead MC in 1994-97. The Roots during this time were heavily jazz-influenced, having Black Thought and Malik B as their MCs.
@pong224 the roots, othello and the hipnotics, jazz hole, crown city rockers, dakah hip hop orchestra, stetsasonic....there are actually a lot of great compilations of live bands featuring rappers as well.
that soprano guy sucked...for real. i was expecting more since he was playin with Roy Hargrove....but oh well....they should've had keith anderson on this vid
i used to play bass like him but then i took an arrow in the knee

The sax solo is crazy. If you listen to it enough it brings a whole new element to the song. It intruduces another path the song could go. Good job!

this is lame, roy hagrove should stick to making forward thinking jazz rather than mimicking old r&b standards, because he sucks at the latter

I liked the soprano bit - nicely expressive, understated.
Maybe a bit evocative of late Miles... definitely Asian.
Something different.

@benway813 Not only was it Different for a sax solo in terms of sound and approach (asian*). The simplicity Killed me. Miles would of been proud.!
This cat is badd.!

I think the soprano was aiming at an indian influenced sound. The shaking produced that vibrato that maybe couldn't be achieved any other way?

Obviously Common can't TOUR with the RH Factor everywhere they go just because he recorded one track with Roy. That's just not going to happen.
Just like how Roy doesn't tour with John Mayer
