it worked for me. But, when i tried making another ringtone they both won't appear in my iphone. It's weird because they still show up in the ringtone section of itunes, but are completly gone from the phone -_________-

This is what I've noticed. Once I drag it to the desktop, it is named by the song name, but the ".m4a" isn't after the name. For example: "Wake Up" and not "Wake Up.m4a". I rename it by adding the "m4r", drag it to the library, and it shows up in the music tab and not the ringtone tab. Please help! Every video has failed me so far, and I don't know what else to do. Apps didn't work for me either, while others claim it to work for them. Am I the only one who has this issue with it lacking ".m4a"?

FOR EVERYONE WHO'S TONE ISN'T SHOWING UP ON THEIR 4S: If your clip is over 30 seconds, it won't show up! I shortened mine to exactly 30 and it worked!

mate ive done everything right and re-synced everything on my 4s (im a mac user) and it shows up in my "tones" as a unhighlighted song that i cant play :-/ cant add it as a tune either. its a bugger.

I had exactly the same problem. I plugged my iphone in, clicked on its icon in 'devices', clicked the 'tones' sub-menu, and I hadn't checked the box to say 'sync tones'! I ticked the box, and mine now works perfectly! thankyou Macminuetslive! :)

hey, it worked for me finee :) though i have one question /problem.. so i managed to do all the things you said, and the ringtone is now the music i want :) but i usualy have in ''sumary'' checked .. manage music manualy, so when i go to tones and pres sync it says it will delete all my music/video/ and so on.. so either i have only ringtones or normal music.. can u help me with that?

OK AND IF YOU GUYS HAVING TROUBLE TO FIND THAT "RINGTONE" TAB, it is not in General Tab anymore, seems like Itunes hide it... so go ahead drag your m4a file to your itunes library section, then the "Tones" tab will appear!! and it would also show up on your Devices section too. = Mindblown! yes, now you have it, and you welcome.

GUYS IF YOU USE PC, DO THIS!!

CONTROL PANEL>FOLDER OPTION> VIEW TAB> UNCHECK HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES> HIT OK then now go ahead RENAME the file from m4a to m4r, there is a warning, hit ok, then your file icon will change into "ring" = mind blown yes, you welcome

Hey Scott, I have an ordinary PC on windows 7. After I converted it to AAC and dragged across I couldnt change to MP4R. When I R/H click it shows the properties as MP4A without an option to change to R. Any ideas?

After I creat the AAC Version I can't find it easy in my iTunes I have to search my mac for it, plus when I open the AAC Version it opens in the compressor application ! do you have a solution to this ?

@Tybostrom If ringtones or other any other items are not in the left side bar then go to preferences (under iTunes in the menu bar at the top of the screen), then go to the general tab and click the "ringtone" box. Then press ok and it will appear again. Not all the options may be checked and this is a good time to check them. You may find other options that you may want to make active or others that you may want to turn off.

Hi Kenny,

First in your iTunes under devices and click on your iPhone 4S. There are tabs at the top and one says ringtones. Make sure it is checked for all ringtones or the one you want is checked. Next go to your ringtones in iTunes and make sure it is showing up on the list. If it is and it still is not on your phone, and this has happened to me, I would just redo the ringtone. If that does not work let me know and I'll post a video.

I believe he missed out on 1) making sure you keep your custom ringtone to within 30 seconds and 2) syncing it with your phone after you've done all he's taught. You ought to see it in your phone's tone list after that.

What OS are you using, Mac or Windows. There is a little more work with Windows due to Windows does not allow extention changes as easy. Are you seeing the ringtone in iTunes? Is it not just coping over to your iPhone? Let me know and we can see if we can figure it out.

It's probably Windows.

Just go to "system options" --> "folder options" --> "view" (in the top bar between "general" and "search") --> remove tick "hide extensions by known file types"

I have been asked why the ringtones are grayed out when viewing them. Remember if you look at the ringtones under Devices in iTunes and down through the hierarchy of the iPhone they will be grayed out, because they can not moved or deleted from there. Always go to our device and use the phone tabs to add or remove ringtones or other content.

Hi Kevin,

I would think that the preferences messed up and the "ringtone" box is unchecked. Go into preferences in iTunes and in the General tap make sure the "ringtone" box is checked. If it is then trash the .plist file for itunes and restart iTunes. I did not have time to make a video tonight but I will tomorrow to better explain. thanks
