Except when she tried to sing with a cold! I met her a number of times and had talks with her. She had a beautiful oil painting I did of her - hanging in her studio. She loved it!
Visually she was stunning, and looked the part. Vocally - sshe had her good days and bad days, as most singers do. But always was she a diva. I have seen Anna perform this role many times, and she never disappointed me.
I'm one of those rare people who enjoy both Tebaldi and Callas, and recognize that neither are perfect.
However, I am more and more enjoying listening to Anna Moffo. What she may lack in interpretation at times she makes up for in sheer beauty (and I'm strictly talking about her voice).

She stinks. No power to her voice. Listen to Jeanette Macdonald sing this (not really considered opera since she had no formal training in the medium) and she has power to spare.
We live in an era when we have become used to singers being cast because of their looks rather than vocal talent and half-trained voices that have never been on stage are touted as great opera stars! Anna Moffo was no trivial cross-over artiste. Her physical beauty could distract one from the quality of that voice and technique. The girl could nail it, on stage, in concert - not made in a recording studio. Gorgeous looks, glorious voice and great presence. Thank U

Callas was only a singing actress. She caws like a monkey and sounds like a bagpipe. Her voice was shallow, boring, sluggish, colorless, without emotions and couldn't strike the high notes. Callas sounds like a musical clock from the 20s and cannot hold the candle to Anna Moffo.
It's time for you to go at Callas sites ... you dirty sow!!
@DanyelHawkes Callas is very tolerant to rhythm. And I'm really polite, because word "tolerant" is quite an euphemism here. Callas also skips too many tones of the coloraturas. I understand, that not everybody is a confessor of singing technique, but Callas style (ie recompiling the song according to instant state of mind and lungs) simply isn't my cup of tea. Moffo is significantly better (despite I don't like her overacting), Sills is even better and Deutekom is unbeatable.

Senti ferricalos se non ti piace la lirica cambia pagina "Cos'è sta roba..." questo è il tuo modo di esprimerti ? Sappi allora che la Signora Moffo è stata tra i migliori
Technically, Moffo was superior to Netrebko and Fleming although the voice itself was not as beautiful as her successors. She was gorgeous to boot. One of the greatest American sopranos, very unjustly put down these days.
I think in her time people used to dump on her for her lack of great coloratura technique, but that was because of the other amazing sopranos around. But you are right she is WAY better than Netrebko and Fleming..... combined!
I believe Moffo made a film version of Traviata (late 50s?) in Italy. I have seem clips from it and her performance is truly spectacular. I agree that in her prime she was one of the best Violettas ever (as well as Manon). By the way, I LOVE the jewels and 60s high fashion in this TV appearance. Moffo could pull of high fashion like few others (opera or otherwise).
WOW! Fabulous.... One of those rare performances when being left 'breathless' by the performers art and passion, is the highest compliment which may be expressed!
Her coloratura was brilliant. Some have criticized her technique. I disagree. Without amazing technique, she could not have sung like this. But she did push too hard at times - beyond her natural limits - and that probably caused her early vocal demise. I heard her sing in the mid-70's and her voice was pretty much gone, at least the night I attended.
Moffo had a more conventionally beautiful voice than Callas in the roles they both sang but she was without a doubt influenced by Callas in her interpretation of Violetta, Lucia. I think in her hey day Callas gave the most exhilarating performances of Lucia I ever heard. The Callas voice was a unique instrument. Moffo possesed a great voice too. They were both good actresses, good musicians, glamor Divas and great stars of the Opera. we can enjoy both without comparison.
Judith Blegen remembers seeing Anna as Violetta, and said to herself, 'Judy, you're never going to sing Traviata'. Ellen Shade also saw that performance and said she couldn't get over how gorgeous she was. Anna was Violetta.
I saw Anna Moffo toward the end of her singing career and was saddened by the toll her unbalanced emotional state had taken on her voice. BUT, I loved her singing in many of the early years, and she influenced my entire perception of opera in an extraordinarily positive way...a true artist of deep and meaningful interpretation of operatic roles not known before her.
Anna Moffo is the best Violetta period, better than Callas. She had class, beauty, intellect and a fantastic voice. She was also a great actress of the opera. I love this woman! And it's sad that cancer ended her life in 2006
Great singing, I've heard and seen on dvd the live recording of La traviata (by Verdi)where Violetta is portrayed by Stefania Bonfadelli, amazing actress, not so excellent singing as Miss Moffo here but quite recomendable...
yes very beautiful and a fabulous voice, but there is one who is better and will live forever too: Jeanette MacDonald she died young at 61 or so but she was the quintessential epitome of voice but there are singers for everyone but alas the good ones are gone but long live their meomories
Yes, freespiritQC, she sang La Boheme in the early 70's with Luciano, but he was just starting to reach his peak and she was past hers. She also sang an opera with Domingo when he was even younger.
Among sopranos who were also stunningly beautiful women, she was by far the best singer of them all. Sorry Netrebko fans.
Indeed, she was pretty enough to be a movie star, and her voice was the most beautiful of all the sopranos I've ever heard, in my opinion...along with Caballe's.
Except when she tried to sing with a cold! I met her a number of times and had talks with her. She had a beautiful oil painting I did of her - hanging in her studio. She loved it!
