  • for this do you use orchestral tuning or solo tuning?

  • How much did the bass cost? I'm considering getting one. I play the electric bass but not the upright.

  • @Zackr27 $10,000

  • @pianista47 how damn

  • Good sir, you have inspired me to pick up my Bass for the first time in 3 months and practice.

  • Nice breathing

  • hah i like the back and forth movement, bassists do that all the time

  • lovin the blue lead pencil.

  • Oh man... i need to get back to practicing now!

  • haha i think he inspired me to apply for eastman school of music @ rochester

  • Wow! Great tone man!! And I don't think there's anything wrong with moving to your playing, your putting your soul into it and you show it too. You wouldn't to be known as a great emotionless bass player now would ya?? haha

  • great Job!

IMHO I don't think it matters what bass you play. If Gary Karr, Edgar Meyer, Thierry Barbe, or any of those guys played your bass they would still sound great.

  • nice sound, well played... what double bass is it? Congratulations

  • it doesnt really matter how much you move when playing! It just shows how much feeling that he is putting into the music!

  • Very Good!

  • What strings are you playing?

  • so pretty. Love to see more of your videos.

  • Good job!

  • This is soooo beautiful

I love this peice, this is one of my favorite recordings on youtube :)

  • do my eyes decieve me or is that folder telling me you go to Eastman?

  • What kind of bass do you play on?

  • Great playing, such a gorgeous piece! You definitely get the operatic aria style across.

  • Im really gonna have to come to you for lessons lol

  • WOW. Puts "hot cross buns" to shame. Totally lovely in the low notes.

  • i'm in love.

  • Cool vibrato! I like the bass. though i play the violin

  • You sound incredible! But your vibrato needs to be a little itty bitty bit faster. I don't play Bass, but it's in my perspective.

  • nah totally wrong. double bass vibrato needs to be slow, even though it has to become quicker for higher notes.

  • nah totally wrong. double bass vibrato needs to be consistent with the style, pitch range, and emphasis the player's trying to convey with each note. Speed and concentration of vibrato should vary.

  • yh sorry, i noticed that what i wrote wasnt exactely right.. i meant, that, for instance, in the elegy the vibrato shouldnt be that quick especially on the lower notes. its just not a cello, its a double bass ;)

  • 3:53 arpeggio/progression is gorgeous. What a beautiful ending.

    And such a massive melody.

  • OMG this sound is amazing, your instrument has amazing intonation , i have never heard an instrument with that good a tone quality ever

  • I hope to see more from him, but im guessing he Graduated because we havent seen anything new from him in a year.

  • No worries! learning to sound good on a piece of crap can often make you a better player than those who practice on a very expensive instrument... or so i've noticed.

  • thats for sure! ive played the double bass for a year and a half and played on a really clapped out old bass at school, now im going to the royal welsh college of music and drama as a first study bassist!

  • Yeah... from my experience I can say than it's true :p

  • I think your finger position (and by extension, vibrato) would improve greatly if you were to raise your elbow so your wrist is straight when in thumb position.

  • Being a bass player myself, I can tell you know the notes and get the gist of the piece fairly well. However, you need to break it apart and work on individual shifts, practice a controlled vibrato, make bow changes less obvious, and also make sure that you have the proper amount of weight on the string so as to avoid scratchy sounds. But overall, excellent! Keep up the good work!

  • thank you for posting this, it helped me get a feel for the piece when i was learning it. keep up the good work.

  • i like your vibrato, you can improve your sound quality.

  • magnificent, bravo.

  • what kind of bass is that? it sounds wonderful.

  • He's the one making it sound wonderful.

  • well I'm not sure how it's meant to sound but I like how it does sound irrespective of you moving or not. *shrug*

  • I like your playing a lot, you're a great player. I thought there could be more dynamic contrast. I know your recording equipment is not great, but I felt you played in the range of mp to f the whole time. Try to get softer and build up to longer phrases.

The rhythm is shaky in the long notes at the beginning. I felt you came in early every time. Play it with a piano, or metronome and play the rhythm that is written.

Otherwise, I like your vibrato, and I think you have great technique

  • Beautiful. I agree that you should continue with the movement. Moving not only helps you get into the music more, but I think it also helps with dynamics.

  • That is an amazing performance man. Dont listen to the other guy about moving. Moving adds a lot to your performance. Express yourself the way you will and dont let anything get in the way. Otherwise nice.

  • Sounds great, I'll get those gloves back to you chief.

  • stop moving back and forth so much

    otherwise its brilliant!!

  • yeah i know, it looks kind of stupid. i'll work on it.

  • @zimbwabe I don't mind it. Great job! Do you have the sheets for it?

  • @jdg303 moving back and forth like that is just part of playing these instruments!! watch all of the greats play and you will see them doing it too. its just because the music moves you so much while you are playing it that you just automatically move like that! i would be more worried if he stood there still as a stone.

  • Heres my constructive comment:

    1. Great vibrato

    2. Nice musicality

    3. You should watch the upper register intonation

    4. When you play the eighth notes after the dotted half tied to an eighth try to trust your arm weight and in general try to trust your weight more(it was only noticeable in a few spots). Imo, it will create a warmer tone that speaks better.
