Absolutely AWESOME! And as killer in its simplicity and emotion as were Zep's, Cream's, Beck's and Doors in their complexities. Observation: It appears in these Free vids the only pedals in use were Kirk's bass drum and hi-hat. Proof there is much in the way of dynamics available simply in one's playing and instruments. Pedals? We don't need no stinkin' pedals.
Everytime i see this Video i get Ghoosebumps all over , hearing this wonderfull played Guitar from Kos .... so Awesome ... Outstanding Rock Music at its Best .....
The "blockouts" between the pickups on Kossoff's Paul you noted are the abrasions in the gold top finish caused from relentless playing over time. Proof that this guy was maybe a tad bit enamored with his instrument and liked to, um, play, sort of. That's really good for us.
Um...big. Really REALLY BIG, Mr. Another little Freeism: Note throughout the songs Kirke's very sparing use of his crash & ride. Combine the elements from these four lads, nothing quite like it. What is it about sparse that is SO damned infectious?
I have followed Paul Rodgers career since I was 10 yrs old....now being 53 my interest begins and I might ad, ends with FREE. Don't get me wrong. I loved BADCO, all SOLO stuff and even QUEEN! But for all intents and purposes....and most certainly because of bandmates KOSSOFF, FRASER (a then 17yr old sensation) and KIRKE....FREE, to me, stands alone in raw talent! Free drove me to appreciate blues, ballads and hard rock! ... still does today!
EVERYONE PLEASE CHECK OUT A COUPLE OF MY VIDS, INCLUDING A COVER OF THE HUNTER (FREE) IM REALLY TRYING TO GO FOR THAT KOSSOFF SOUND/STYLE, SO PLEASE CHECK THEM OUT AND TELL ME WHAT U THINK. CHEERS!!!!!
@santiaguson -- Nobody talks about the bass solo because the arpeggios Koss plays over it are so awesome that you have to ask Andy to take a back seat on this one.
Sometimes, things like this happen, 4 Great Musicians come together , and decide to create a Band , and the Result is one of the most Important Rock Bands ever , including on of the Best Guitar PLayers ever .... FREE Awesome Band !
Such an iconic image...against the amps to feel his own sick and wicked vibrato. One of the greatest. Take a look to the "Late great Paul" narrated by his father, to know more about this fantastic guitar player
I think the many live versions out there of Mr Big eclipse the studio version. Also love the way Andy makes his bass sound like a tuba or something. FANTASTIC. I guess it's due to that (pleasingly!) 'flubby' (!) tone that Gibson basses were noted for isn't it!?
And it's as if Koss is doing a rhythm solo rather than a lead so that Andy can do his spot. Once again, simply amazing! The band Free were masters of using space and econmy to create dramatic tension.
Stunning, absolutely stunning. The audience seem surprisingly reserved though. Mmind you, sat cross legged in a field was the order of the day in 1970 wasn't it;-)
Is this the Isle of White?
Anyway, I first heard this in 1970 on Fire and Water and Andy Fraser's bass solo blew me away back then. One of the prime movers in getting me started on bass. I still use this solo as a warm up before practice, it helps if you've got a 23 or 24 fret bass, otherwise, you might run out of neck!
I wouldn't say that they are underated because music citics rave about them (quite rightly) they are highly respected in the music circles. I'd just say their not as well known as they should be to the general public.
Koss war der Größte. Es ist so traurig das man so viele gute Videos von Free bei uns in Deutschland nicht mehr sehen kann. Schade das man das nicht ändern kann oder will.
OMG, I just read @Theinboil's comment. Please give me few moments while I regain composure from my disbelief laughter..............there. I don't know what you listen to or play (providing you're a musician, which by the looks of it, I highly, highly doubt), but chances are REAL good the people you may listen to or try to emulate, were influenced by Free. Free knew how to play "dead space" allright, that's called taste and style. Which is apparently something you severely lack.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
great vocals. but this band is rated rightly. they couldnt write out of the 12 bar blues, and theres way too much dead space in their sound. Kossof has the guitar faces down, but there aint shit coming outa that les paul. his phrasing is really poor. this is not opinion, its fact. theyre stale, just like bad co.
@TheInboil Ahem... There's no rules in music... And that's not fact... That's your opinion. Many people's opinion would be that Kossoff had an amazing tone thank you very much!!!! i understand people like yngwie and dragnlord possess a huge amount of talent but this also requires a certain talent, a talent that maybe can't quite be taught
One of the greatest bands to come out of the seventies. Listen to that bass, from Andy Fraser, it's like another guitar. Koss on lead was fabulous. Paul Rodgers strutting his stuff and the voice, oh God. Kirke on drums, fantastic.
Koss was the greatest. He had so much soul and so much feeling, he must sing. No, his Guitar sing`s for him. I can say it in words what i feel for Paul, It`s magic.
Thank God I discovered Paul Kossoff in a guitar magazine a few months back and the magazine was 100 greatest guitarist s of all time. Hes a soulful bluesy, funky Rock guitarist. Gone too soon but his music lives on.
Free were the ass kickin' Blues rockers that blew alot of minds (including mine) when they toured the states in '69. What a great band. Kossoff was all about taste. And that vibrato; lord have mercy!!!
I never thought much of Kossoff until recently though I came of age in the heydey of the British Blues Blitz). I had always admired that remarkable solo in "All Right Now" of course, but that was it. Now / finally (idiot that I can be) I realize that Paul Kossoff is/was quite simply the best electric blues guitarist I have ever listened to. I can't say I miss him because I never knew him, and anyway the music will live forever, gaining admirers all along the way.
met the great Koss before his untimely death. A very unasuming person. Hhad a chat for about 15 mins after the BackStreet Crawler Gug at Liverpool Empire. He autographed my Free Story ltd edition and Fire and Water. I will never ppart with them. So Sadly missed
A special time.........which you will never forget - Saw Free and Peace at the Liverpool Stadium back in the mists of time - The place was pretty grotty but the memories are great........keep rockin'
This fantastic but underrated band had one of the best singers, best solo guitar players and a very young (17) but marvelous bass player who innovated the bass playing using chords most of the time and very often alternating the solos with the guitar assuming the rhythm. Kossoff & Fraser were like a single entity merging their instruments like anyone else in rock and roll history. Paul Rodgers was lucky to have such talented musicians to back him up leaving him FREE to improvise on vocals!
I love this band but they never received the attention they deserved from the media. Lots of people know Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc, but very few heard about FREE.
''''''Alright Now'''''' is the most played rock song on classic rock radio ever in history, true fact. Truly remarkable band they were, Kossoff and Page are how I started to play guitar.

@sauerix I agree 100%. Even Krike, who said he's not into fancy stuff, does everything so complete and utterly perfect. I mean look at them:
Fraser - As you said. Insane bass playing for that age. Even for someone twice his age.
Rodgers - Well. One of the best voices ever, period.
Kossoff - When it comes to this kind of music, is there actually anyone that's better?
And also add the fact that they was so incredibly young. They were a collection of wonders - not just a group.
