  • I get chills every time I hear and/or see this. Love Judy, love the song.

  • no puedo escribi en ingles

  • She doesn't just sing - she performs. She believes the words, thinks about what she's saying, so we do to. It makes even old standards fresh because she seems to care about what she's doing.

  • I agree, there's no better rendition of this song. Damn she makes me cry every time.

  • Shani Wallis,Judy Garland and Julie Andrews are Legends!!!!!

  • wow. great. yes she is Legend!

  • She is LEGEND.

  • I LOVE when she slams her hands down on the podium at the end of the performance! This isn't the only time she's done that, but I just LOVE when she does it!

  • Judy did a fantastic perfomance .

  • Ms. Garland is a force of nature... just breathtaking!

  • i just cant with her. im an emotional mess. so gorgeous!!!!!

  • Wow... the ending gave me goosebumps...

  • Damn!.....Bring it home, Judy!!

  • Judy sang "As Long" twice on her show. The first time was early during the series, in 1963. This is the clip shown here. The second time was taped (her show was never filmed) on March 6, 1964 for show #25, the next to last. It can be seen on youtube also. Look up "Get Happy/As Long As He Needs Me."

  • incomparable..

  • In the show "Oliver", Nancy sings this song as if her love would never cause her harm. Of course we all know that she is killed by her lover. Judy's voice is like Butter here(to borrow a phrase). Vincente Minnelli was in the booth during the taping of this show. He complimented George Slaughter, tellin him that he was shooting Judy just the way he would do if he were doing this show. There is no bettere rendition!

  • My favorite version of this song hands down. There is no one comes close to her. The network execs told her to change the lyric and not use the word "hell" but she wouldn't change it. Catch the quick defiant glance she gives the camera at 2:30 just before she sings it. I love that woman! .

  • Beautiful.....too many lost to early but remain forever in film and song.

  • Jesus Christ...somebody help me off the floor

  • @sycoanalyst Speaking of floors, I'm rolling on it with laughter with that hilariously melodramatic comment. I love it and will be borrowing it:)

  • How fortunate we are to still have Judy in our lives. Unparalleled.

  • Favorite rendition of this song.

Favorite song by Judy- although that's really difficult to choose.

  • Judy unforgettable! wonderful

  • Almost anyone can be an entertainer, but very few have God-given talent. Judy is one of the few.

We are all lucky to have this music saved for us so generations in the future can hear and enjoy it.

  • Judy was so great! She and Julie Andrews are the best singer/acors I know of!

  • She was Hollywood's greatest talent!

  • I just got the chills. Wow. Amazing rendition. <3 you Judy! Simple outstanding.

  • She was THe Queen. Everybody else is a pretender to the throne..

  • my second fave version (:

  • she expresses my feelings on the matter better than anyone

  • Played at my grandad's funeral, my grandma used to sing this to him

  • absolutely BRILLIANT!

  • All the love in my heart and the universe for this woman. All of it.

  • My favorite version!!!

  • A true queen. There's just something magical about her voice.

  • Chills. So painful, so powerful, so beautiful.

  • thank you so much for posting....timeless, and I'm so glad the world can continue to enjoy this....

  • @cuoredeinidi All correct but the daughter was not even remotely a "close second".

    Garland sang like a bird.

    Daughter brayed like a donkey.

  • so sad to realize how far we have fallen from here. These nobodies/non talents of today should be forced to see these videos and learn something!

  • Lionel Bart, the composer of "Oliver," wrote all the songs with Judy in mind.

  • Telling the story with one's eyes... I hope it's not a dead art form.

  • Directors of musicals today can only look and weep. IMO there's no female stage musical voice comparable with Judy's; never was, never will be.

  • Now that's singing

  • Best singer ever, no contest.

  • ALWAYS THE BEST TECHNICALLY - A GENIUS IN FACT - BUT NOT ENOUGH DESPARATION - IT JUST ISN'T HER SONG - WALLIS RULES ON THIS ONE....

  • ..this holiday weekend no doubt he is already having his needs met.. tears..

  • I dedicate beloved Judy's perfectly stellar presentation

{{ to my dear soul twin in hopes that this too will pass very soon}} thank you most beautiful Judy Garland R.I.P.

    (hug)

    ~Celeste Ann~

  • @Not2commonofcaurse ...amen and amen

  • @LovetoUtoo amen and amen to the tune of the volin wow

  • does anyone know what the name of her ture life film was called??

ive been trying to find it everywhere

  • Can't deliver a tune better than that!

  • Judy Garland is queen.

  • Every time I hear this song, this performance and especially if I watch as I did when I was 6 year's old, it makes me cry, it makes me short of breath and it defies all comprehension that anyone who has known love cannot be affected by it in the very same way. The way she builds it from every cell in her little body was a miracle to behold and always will be. That it is here on and on film and in the ether forever is fantastic. And I'm a straight punk rocker biker, so you can trust I'm right.

  • she was here such a short time, but left us so much.

  • I wish it was still like this...back when people actually had to have talent to be on TV.

  • Perfect. Just Perfect.

  • Judy! Judy! Judy!! SO incredibly great is "As Long As He Need Me" by Garland, no description cab describe how great Garland is doing this classic...a performance to watch over and over again, the ultimate...Bravo Judy...nobody could compare today to this definitive performance!

  • Comment removed

  • So, now you know how an Angel sings......like Judy Garland.

  • great rendition! but i think this was earlier in the show than 64

  • There will only ever be one Judy. Nobody will ever compare to her. Such a great voice. Such a great woman

  • Garland looking magnificent giving the memorable performance of a lifetime, Judy simmers & soars as only she could going to the core of "As Long As He Needs Me" making this magical performance a timeless classic moment to be enjoyed over and over again...Bravo Judy & RIP

  • That was simply amazing!! Beautiful!!

  • I hate crying! Damn you Judy!

  • mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

  • she's not as good as Shani Wallis

  • @101genco who?

  • @Choefoe judy garland is not good as Shani Wallis

  • @101genco Can be, still don,t know who that is;-)

  • @101genco she played Nancy in 1968 Oliver!

  • @101genco comment gave me a good laugh for today...comparing Shani to Judy is like comparing Aretha to Beyonce and not saying Shani is not a fine singer but Garland gets inside this classic and owns it...

  • Check out the young Judy Garland, Mylie Taylor does a version of this tune.

  • She had the kind of class and talent that we will never see again. Such a tragic end for such a warm spirit.

  • she couold sing anything!!!...Love you JUDY!

  • take that modern music industry..

  • Just as there will never be another Frank Sinatra, There will never be another Judy Garland.

  • Just as there will never be another Frank Sinatra, There will never be another Judy Garland.

  • There is no one BETTER!!!!

  • what an artist!

  • Please give us back Judy Garland and you can have Justin Bieber!

  • ok, didn't see it in WOO, but I can see Liza in her here....

  • I still want to marry her.....

  • Judy totally owned that song then and there.

  • NO EFFORT AT ALL!!!!! She sings the hell out of this song. She is breath taking here and she stay in my memories just like this because that is the way she was for as long as she could be.98lbs here giving everything she's got!!!Thank all of you that put Great stuff up of Judy Garland.GOD I Love her!!!! Barb...

  • Jimbo8137watch her more and watch her closely and as she takes your heart in her hands and warms your very soul and brings you sunshine and never lets you down in any of her songs then maybe you will begin to understand what this Woman talent did, dose and always do to you inside yourself.Maybe then you will feel what you don't understand right now Love Barb...

  • Judy Garland had one of the most amazing & beautiful voices. You can just see how Judy puts her all into her songs, you can see it in her face. This song gives me the chills everytime I hear it. It is sad that Miss Garland had such an emotional & hard life. Her legacy will forever be remembered. One of the best performers of the 20th century. We will never see the likes of her again. Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

  • OMG this is the best live performance iv ever seen any star perform, GOD i so wish that i had the oppertunity to meet her, i love the way she licks her lips at 3.08 judy garland u are quite simply the best, just wish u were still here wiv us, i love u sooooo much xxxxx

  • She is so cute and tiny any one who may have seen her or worked with her had to have wondered at least once a day what a set of pipes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD love you Judy. After all you endured here on earth. The Angels must be smiling because you are there with them. Still Loving you Barb...

  • Its a darn shame she left the world when she did. God Bless her.

  • @bttrflyscar1 I'm 14 and all of this music appeals to me, I could sit all day and listen to this kind of music. I hate the music of today, hardly anyone that is famous has a genuine talent

  • @ArBoBsIsE Most of the 'famous' people of today are people who have bought their fame, footy stars, or rich bimbo's who try to buy the fame that does not belong to them. There are very few stars left that have any real talent

  • @ArBoBsIsE I agree, i'm 16, and all of these so called 'famous artists' can't and shouldn't even be compared to Judy. Now this is talent!

  • @Above comments: The Music indusry makes more money when it only appeals to 14 year olds. Unfortunately that means when we get older that popular culture no longer applies to us--and we will not like what we see.

  • @bttrflyscar1 I'm also 14 and I could listen to this music all day. I can't stand most of today's music.

  • @bttrflyscar1 Some younger people don't have terrible taste too. I promise.

  • Judy sang this song twice on her series. This is the earlier version, not episode 25.

  • Every once in a while God lets one of her Angels visit Earth to

sing to us and teach us how we should love.

One such Angel is Judy Garland.

  • This song makes all women look like stalkers and creeps.

  • @pet3rgriffin Either you are a troll or you have never seen the movie "Oliver" because that isn't what the song conveys.

  • @briarts Trololololol

  • why wasnt i alive in the 60s!!!!!

  • ¡¡¡ UNA DE LAS GRANDES, EN SERIO, TAN AUTENTICA, FUE UNICA!!! Y DE LAS

    YA INOLVIDABLES.

  • Garland demonstrates once again her preeminence in dramatic popular song.

  • I can't get enough of this absolutely wonderful/ heartwrenching.

  • I can't get enough of this absolutely wonderful/ heartwrenching.

  • I have to sing this for a class, and I'm glad I found a GOOD version of this song. I definitely want to emulate Judy as I'm singing this.

  • @raptor9191987

Much as I think Judy Garland can do no wrong, I think you also ought to listen to Shani Wallis. To me she is THE Nancy (if you can get past the atrocious accent!).

  • @cuoredeinidi you not only smacked the proverbial "ball out of the park" ... you nailed it

  • I feel so bad for Judy. She didn't make a dime off this show. Her manager stole all of it. She was on the verge of POVERTY towards the end of her life because of him.

  • @hop208 sadly in poverty not on the verge of

  • Me aged 15 singing ' I'd give my life for you' ..please let me know what you think

  • I miss this woman so much. she died when i was only 13. i really don't entirely understand the hold she has had over me. I only know i love her.

  • @Jimbo8137 It probably means a number of things, but one thing it certainly means is that you are a person with a special regard for 'soulfulness' ... so you have the capacity to treat people well and perhaps bring some joy into another person's world, if you choose. A very good thing indeed.

  • that dame could BLOW!!!!! i give it to judy, the girl had chops to spare! dionne warwick's version is the one i've grown up with since before adolesence and i searched for hers on here and couldn't find it; judy's is a more than comparable substitute.

  • @darchylde612

Try the version done by the far less famous Ruthie Henshall. Sings with tremendous power and emotionality and flawless technique

  • @zalman595 thanks for the tip....i'll give it a listen! :-)

  • I really enjoyed watching this video. Was this the little girl from the Wizard of Oz? Simply beautiful!

  • Thanks for sharing that, defundthewar. Never had heard that story.

  • Look carefully at 2:30 and you'll see a lightening flash snarky look into the camera, right before she sings "the hell, I've got my pride." That was for the CBS execs who would be watching. They had warned her not to sing the word "hell." They wanted her to change the lyric to "you know I've got my pride." That's how it was then, in 1963. Of course, now you can say or do anything, and have no particular talent.

  • Can anything today remotely compare to this? dont think so!

  • @Jimbo8137 i agree jimbo...back in the day you had to have actual TALENT, nowadays all it takes is running around damn near naked, wear sagging pants, doing some lewd gyrations or having a stream of profanity coming from one's mouth and the industry tries to pass this off as talent. do you hear that clinking sound like a spoon against glass? it's the entertainment industry hitting the bottom of the proverbial jar.

  • It seems I have one of the few last chances in life - that is to hear this ANGELIC voice of Judy Garland. One may wish to live forever listening to her voice. It is like travelling unrestrained into a place close to utopia.

  • Talk about selling a song!

  • initially this was not one of my favorites by her. but it really grew on me. both her singing, emotion and the orchestra. it's pretty damn powerful!

  • I think this is my favorite thing that she ever did - it's just heartbreaking, and she's at the top of her game here.

  • She never looked or sang better (if that's possible).

  • Oh those golden years. Look at us now....what the hell happened to us ?

  • @ncruz609 Ronald Reagan happened!!!!!!!

  • @ncruz609 I agree. Why did we ever leave that golden era behind? What we have now just does not compare

  • @ncruz609 Some fool went and invented Autotune.

  • @ncruz609 There's exceptional talent out there - it just goes unappreciated and/or unnoticed.

  • Judy gets inside a song & takes you to the depths with passion & that glorious voice ...television Sunday eve 63-64 enthralled me as a music loving teen watching this gorgeous gifted legend & her magnificent "As Long As He Needs Me" is definitive...Bravo Judy and you are missed!!!

  • "As long as heeeee NEEEEEEEEEEEEEDS >smacks hands down< MEEEEEE..." oooooh, i've just come!

  • I've talked to a lot of friends from other places and the one thing we seem to always come back to is - HOW IN THE HELL did one country produce so many important singers. Judy Garland at this point in her carreer is where; life experience / talent / technique / and interpretation all came together to create perfection!

  • Everything she sings, I swear it's as if she's making up the lyrics on the spot. So genuine and convincing.

  • what an absolutely stunning heartfelt performance. we just dont see anything

like this anymore.this is sheer professionalism at its very very best.

  • RIP we love you judy

  • what a voice this beautiful woman had

  • In my opinion this is one of two show-stoppers from 'Oliver', the other being 'Where is Love?'. Very emotional songs both, and of course Judy is Judy here. Perfection.

  • what key is this in?

  • @whatdoaido

Sounds like the key of F to me.

  • I'm singing this for my Music Examination. I suddenly feel really quite inadequate.

  • so true.. love the movie version but... I always love judy.. wow!!!!

  • 8 people must have sneezed when trying to click the "like" button...

  • JUDY GARLAND ARMY FOREVER

i hope the b******* that made you suffer are suffering 100 times worse now

we all still love you Judy

NEVER FORGET JUDY GARLAND = REAL TALENT

  • Yes, I believe this is from her third show and was filmed in the summer of 1963.

  • Even the incomparable Bassey has to take a back seat to this. There are no superlatives to describe her adequately.

  • Judy Garland is definitely in a class all her own, but years later lets not forget that great talent of hearts, Karen Carpenter, may she RIP softy signing sweet melodies with no doubt, her heavenly friend Judy ;)

  • LOVE this interpretation. . . Judy was simply an irreplaceable legend! It is so sad to me that what we are looking at is a FOURTY-TWO year-old woman. . . such a shame what the pills did to her.

  • where did all the great ones go

    she could stand and deliver

no special effects just raw talent

    she could interpret a song

  • @fancherm wth where are they? very few can evoke both by voice looks ah those were the days

  • I bet she's thinking about Sid Luft.

  • She was cool.

  • Gawd, just NOBODY sings like this anymore it's incredible to hear such a qonderful wonderful interpreter of song. Gonderful? jeez mags... I meant, Wonderful. Wonderful!

  • while judy did perform this song on episode 25, this is actually her performance of "as long as he needs me" from the show where Liza was her guest

  • Sometimes for just a little while God allows one of her Angels to

come to Earth and sing to us for a little while.

But, then of course she calls them back much to soon.

One such Angel is Judy Garland.

  • I love you Judy!

  • Extraordinary!

  • I wasn't born until 1955, & Judy died in 1969. But in that short time I cherished each & every of her performances. She was a living legend. Effortless, powerful, emotional, & she really got to me. Her stage presence & charisma were beyond belief. I sure miss her.

  • magnificient!

  • Bing Crosby, perhaps, said it best: "At her best, there was nothing that little giel couldn't do...except take proper care of herself."

THIS is Judy at her best, of which there is no better.

  • Oh God, ecco una artista!

  • This from one of the first shows in 1963 with Liza Minnelli as her guest judy had a different look and hair style toward the end of the show.. Who cares really when it was aired or taped? It's Judy Garland, singing LIVE! :)

  • It's amazing how people never really appreciated her talent while she was alive, the way they do now. It's because there isnt a voice or talent on this earth now that can compare to this great woman's raw talent and incredible GOD given voice. If you don't believe in GOD I guarantee after hearing Judy for the first time, will change your mind.

  • @NFitalianGuy I get some of your point, but she was one of the biggest BIGGEST stars ever --films, TV, stage, records, radio,, the whole multi-media she conquered before anyone knew what multi-media "was".

She was well-appreciated. You could not compare a modern "star" to her stardom that she enjoyed in the 40s, 50s, & early 60s.

That's where "star" stops and where "legend" begins. Fact.

  • @Vengeance509 I totally understand and makes sense. it's like apples and oranges.. She was MGM's greatest Musical Star and held the public's interest for so long that she was A living Legend.

  • From 3:20 on it's like.............OMG! She was amazing. A Masterclass in acting and singing. WOW.

  • Wow, wow, wow........Nobody does it better. RIP, Miss Garland.

  • Please. You're all off your meds.1

In terms of "comparisons," one can't compare, but pound for pound, hurt for hurt, love for love, gift for gift ... not one damned soul on earth can even APPROACH this woman.

This shocking rendition alone smushes Streisand, Dion, and ... well, *everyone*, under a heel.

Listen and learn. This is Judy Garland.

And I guarantee: this undeserving earth earth will not see her like again.

  • 2:37, phenomenal moment
