The catholic church is bizzarre. I can say this because I was raised (somewhat) catholic. A lot of things never made sense to me. I was only about 5 or 6 when I started to think it was crazy. I still believed in santa clause, but I knew the catholic church was pretty out there.
You know I agree that the burying of a statue is a bit over board and is very similar to the indulgences that the catholic church sold before the protestant reformation. However I do believe that praying for help from many of the saints does help, even if it is only a psychological support. The thing is that the saints and God do not help a man in who will not help himself. So I am sure that many of the people who bury those statues are in not helped by saint Joseph. Their house just sold.

This practice is clearly silly. How does the buried statue of a dead person accomplish anything? This is one of many examples of Roman Catholicism adopting practices and beliefs that are outside of the Bible. Having patron saints at all is really quite absurd and non-biblical. This amounts to little more than some form of ancestor worship.

My dog doesn't have opposable thumbs, so the idea of them "making a gift" is ludicrous....however, they are always happy to see me and greet me at the door...they've also recognized when a member of the family was upset and showed compassion. HOWEVER, if you've seen "Good Luck Chuck" you know that a penguin DOES present its mate with a gift. Many birds "miss" their owners and even go into deep depression if they are gone for a long time.

The catholic church is bizzarre. I can say this because I was raised (somewhat) catholic. A lot of things never made sense to me. I was only about 5 or 6 when I started to think it was crazy. I still believed in santa clause, but I knew the catholic church was pretty out there.

You know I agree that the burying of a statue is a bit over board and is very similar to the indulgences that the catholic church sold before the protestant reformation. However I do believe that praying for help from many of the saints does help, even if it is only a psychological support. The thing is that the saints and God do not help a man in who will not help himself. So I am sure that many of the people who bury those statues are in not helped by saint Joseph. Their house just sold.

This practice is clearly silly. How does the buried statue of a dead person accomplish anything? This is one of many examples of Roman Catholicism adopting practices and beliefs that are outside of the Bible. Having patron saints at all is really quite absurd and non-biblical. This amounts to little more than some form of ancestor worship.

Many might agree that evolution has occurred, but that it happened by random genetic mutations and natural selection are being doubted by more and more scientists. As one scientist said, the mechanism of evolution is as mysterious as evolution is true. That's why there so many different evolutionary theories, none of which stands up when you stick to only materialism.

But as for intellect, I'm sure in order to survive in their circumstances we would have to learn many things that maybe we don't know individually. That is to say I believe the content of our overall knowledge has changed, but as for the measurement of an I.Q. one can only speculate that we would average higher then those that lived before us. sugar, you forget that a mutation must occur in the DNA first...depending on that mutation, it determines the later outcome. REMEMBER, evolution DOES NOT profess a "designer" that guides it. There is a random factor involved (mutation) to which the natural selection must then be observed. TWO DIFFERENT mutations may BOTH survive the natural selection. Apes for strength, humans for intelligence.

Study simple anthropology. When man started to colonize, it started a snowball effect of breakthroughs. Man's discovery of how to create fire would be a big one that would have prolonged his life. The invention of the spear as well. We used to be foragers for millenniums, then we became hunters and gatherers, then we started up irrigation, then came trade...these are the "inventions" that moved things forward...the high speed of advancement more recently is all due to education though.

This "special event" in humans was missed by all the other species on earth.. We just got lucky i guess.

this is an extremely presumptive statement by you. There are MANY creatures that had just as many changes. Whales, for example, have even LARGER brains...they just lack the prehensile thumbs and vocal cords that we have...yet a "language" amongst them HAS been detected.

your points were silly when we started. Now that we've reached the conclusion that animals can in fact think in the same ways as we do, just sometimes to a lesser extent...then doesn't it make sense that they would have a conscious like our, just sometimes to a lesser extent? My dogs feel "guilt" every time I come home and find that they did something they weren't supposed to do. I've seen displays of remorse, shame, and even a change of mind...So why assume they don't have a conscious?

They understand the major differences in the human brain compared to animals, you make light these differences and act as if they are just a little behind.. Have you ever came home and your dog has fashioned a gift for you just because he was missin you all day and was thinking about ya? My dog doesn't have opposable thumbs, so the idea of them "making a gift" is ludicrous....however, they are always happy to see me and greet me at the door...they've also recognized when a member of the family was upset and showed compassion. HOWEVER, if you've seen "Good Luck Chuck" you know that a penguin DOES present its mate with a gift. Many birds "miss" their owners and even go into deep depression if they are gone for a long time.

I theorise that my dog is sentient because she demonstrates it on a basic level. When you sit on her side of the couch she'll stare at you and woof at you until you get out of her spot. Mere mimicry? It's doubtful because no one taught her that particular "trick". She learned it on her own. My dog has also learned how to work a door knob and let herself in and out the porch door (my door swings both ways btw). She knows where her food's kept and will help herself if I'm running late. Sentience.

Interesting; I never said my dog was equivalent and yet you proceed to blather as if I did. Sentience is precisely the point. Bacterium isn't complex enough a life form to become sentient. False laughter doesnt indicate a better position, its used as a response when talking to someone with a weak position. Evolution terms it "special" which is as laughable as the "invisible guy". This guy is clearly visible in every aspect of life, just not to the blind. Evolution cannot truly answer the question, hence the term "special" because it goes against the slow gradual process that makes up evolution.

A large part of modern medicines today are effective due to belief in them, or the belief in the doctor - called placebo effect. Statistically much more effective than most religious stuff. Is this a superstition? Are most people today subservient to a religion that calls itself 'medicine', most good effects being due, not to science, but to blind faith?

JUST because its not prescribed as a drug in the US, that don't ANYTHING.
I've read up on the subject from a variety of sources - and all they've done is attempt to treat people who ALREADY HAD cancer (to try and CURE it).
And no its NOT poisonous - it may have a bitter taste (as i myself have tried one b4), but its supposed to help PREVENT cancer - and not CURE it.

It's amygdalin, which breaks down into cyanide in your body. Peach pits have quite a bit, and I think you might be able to hurt yourself if you chewed on peach pits all day.
I believe that was the result from those studies; a touch of cyanide poisoning.
