Man im telling you what that is one helluva nice job or transformation, both i should say u guys done on one nice ole IH truck!!!I grin every single time i see an ole work horse such as that out doing what it does best.Which unfortunately isn't very often here in NC,in my area anyway.Great job man!
@Jeffreyrno am i wrong? i always noticed it from a kid till now saying not to weld or drill the frame i dono i mean if u weld a fram matter of time till the weld stresses and cracks hense y u should weld or cho a frame and not sup-port it with a 2nd i beam inside bolted near the weld
VERY NICE JOB! well done work guys. its nice to see someone take a old truck and give it a new life. take good care of that truck they just don't build them that good anymore.
LOL rocintrucker.. What a strange world, where even the truckers have metallurgical degrees. A skilled welder with good workmanship can make that truck haul more than the tires will take safely without adding much weight.
Thats cool but how is it road worthy after you hacked the frame? Newer trucks have a heat treated frame that you can't cut or weld with out ruining it. I would not drive it any where but at a show at speeds now higher than lo+lo at a idle
Dunno how many trucks we have stretched/shortened over the years, and still being done-- nope, you don't let the villiage idiot at it- yup, there is a very definite protocol to it, if you want to pass DOT inspections!!
It's an all terrain forklift of sorts. They aren't really all terrain, but they can navigate slippery and slightly muddy uneven areas with a decent payload to boot
The laziest ,weakest chassis join. The cuts should be at an angle to get a maximum length weld. The inner and outer skins have to be separated and cut and joined at least two feet apart to spread the stress of the load.
The middle axle is a lifting tag axle. It adds up to 20,000 lb to the legally allowed gross weight of the truck. When in a tight turn or when not needed the driver can lift the axle off the ground by the use of air bags. A couple of the stills show the axle off the ground.
If you know your welder well you can get very strong welds without effecting the metal much ,you need a good hot arc & the right rods or you basically melt everything around it weld holes also help as well more weld area.
a tractor/trailer combo will eat a whole lot less rubber than this midmount tag axle... And its easier to hire another truck to put in front of your trailer when that welded frame starts to sag... Right behind the cab, where the platform subframe ends, is the worst place you can have a weld in a frame..
yes true RenzeZielman but if you fish plate it or bolt plates that works or both but i do agree and if your gunna strech a frame like a tractor trailer type its better to bolt plate and also weld cuts the sag out
You're right if you mean, fish plate over the welds. Thats how its prescribed in the bodybuilders manuals of trucks like DAF, Mercedes, Iveco, which i have designed bodies for. The welding of high tensile frames changes the material characteristics, which eventually lead to fatigue problems in flexing truck frames.
Yes! Yes it does! But through the weld areas the frame gets double, and triple framed. i.e. major overlap with a second or third frame of larger size. This is BOLTED into place so that temper is not affected.
Thank you Sir. I do have Jakes and black tag injectors on order ... more videos I promise! I just hate filming in the winter with all the sand and muck!
ive always loved detroits since i was a kid.. i wish i had ur talent.. id love to build some kinda pickup with a detroit in it.. since i cant im having a guy custom build a 6v53 twin t. gonna try and drop it in a 1970.international 4x4 1 tonner. any suggestions on how i should do it??? thnx mike
Never tried that swap. Sorry no ideas. However ... working on putting a 7.3 International and an allison into a 79 ford F350. Keep posted ... LOL Hmmm what music do you think would fit?
It lifts when going around corners. The driver was just a tad late lifting it in the video. But it still had no down pressure ... so I guess the tires were not scrubbing toooo hard! I have since changed up to larger release valves so it lifts faster.
That truck is a BEAST!!

despite the fact that nearly every large truck frame is sectioned with at least 2 peices if not more, from the factory.
it is perfectly safe to do despite the stamp on the frame.

the only p[roblem i find here is that axle in the middle....it will greatly affec t your turning radius...other than that, it is a great successs.

The axle second from front, does this help steer/move on corners or just scrub round.
