Coming down slowly does not train the opposing muscle groups, its still using the same bicep, trap, shoulder combo as climbing up albeit probably engaing some more core muscles to help stabilise the body. Training the opposing muscle groups to this excercise would be better accomplished with shoulder press or similar exercises. Its important to note that this exerise could also be damaging to the tendons of anyone not comfortable with doing say 15 normal pullups. Particularly the downclimb part.

i see what you mean but seriously... you're not going to get your needed fingerstrength doing this :) climb to improve climbing
