  • after watching the movie a second time, i noticed how many little hints they were giving him to make him snap out of it, and also why they take his gun which wasnt real in the first place

  • In the end when leo says something like "live as a monster, or die a good man"

He KNEW he was never getting off that island, so he decided to let them do what they wanted (brain surgery, which hes most likely die in) Because he'd rather DIE a good man knowing he WAS Teddy, than staying there alive, as a patient and they brainwash him into thinking he's a monster (Andrew)

  • You need to think more outside of the box with this explanation, you just went along with what the movie tells you, its deeper than that,

  • Why dont ANY movies with Leonardo Dicaprio make sense???!?!?!?

    First, this and now Inception.

  • @NecroBuddha Surely thats a good thing? makes you think :D

I want more movies like this!

  • @kingsmiles1 yes it had me all fucked up in the head I thought they were just playing tricks on teddy trying to get him to be trapped on the island or something idk

  • does anybody else think that he is actually a cop? and they fooled him into believing all this so that they could do experiments on him?

  • ur awesome dude i was so fucking confused before i watched this video

  • When he speaks to Rachael in the cave, she asks if he's been smoking his own cigarettes. Right at the beginning of the film, on the boat, he says he cant find his cigarettes. Any one else notice this?

  • @AngryBenNG Obviously. That's why it makes it more believable that they are against him !

  • If he's so dangerous, then why do they let him off the island and onto the ferry?

  • @dghansen85 they didnt, he went to the electric chair!!!

  • @NIKEISNICKY12345 I meant at the beginning of the movie.

  • @dghansen85 They didn't! They are lobotomizing him! So he'll practically be a vegetable.. with no memories or anything.

  • @dghansen85 They would have sent him on a round trip, so he wouldnt go to any land, he would set sail, go about a mile out, the memories would kick in and they would turn it around and thats where the movie starts

  • @93tiny08 I understand that's the plan...but it's an incredibly dangerous plan, is it not? Don't you see the danger in letting a criminally insane inmate loose on a ferry under minimal guard?

And you said the memories would kick in. When exactly? And how do they know when? Memories aren't just something you can turn off and on with a switch. It makes no sense.

  • @dghansen85 I agree it is extremely dangerous but the Doctor (his name escapes me) would rather take the risk than labotomise him, a nice man. I think either the false memories of 'Teddy Daniels' where induced or started when he first came to Shutter Island, much like the fake Rachael who believed the staff where postmen and neighbours. Or they provoked his memories whilst on the ferry with Andrew Laedis stuff. I totally agree though, major plot holes and messed up stuff :)

  • Fuckin' Fatass!!!

  • My friend noticed something really important at the end of the movie:

when he is in the tower with the doctors, there's a gun on the table that's supposed to be fake toy gun right? If that's the case why do the "doctors" get scared when he grabs the gun and points it at them??? The are trying to wake him up and show him the truth right? Then why do they jump at first and get scared, shouldn they be calm as they know the gun is fake!?

Watch it again if you don't believe me!

  • I dont belive he wuzz krazy

  • 4:10 in the background you can hear someone giving a lobotomy ;)

  • I disagree I be leave he was sane. there are little facts that alot of people miss that point to him being sane.

  • @wildgene24 Thank you i thought i wuzz the only one...theirs no kind of evidence leading him of being krazy...

  • What i don't get, is when he's in mid-hallucination, and he's in this kind of dream sequence - he sees 'rachel', who stands over her 3 dead children with blood on her hands and on her children. However, both rachel & dolores drowned their 3 children, no killing was implied. Is this an error?

  • @xoxholliiee maybe it is an error of Andrews brain cuz he cant accept reality

  • @xXSimonJCPXx I support you, besides there is anoter important fact: If solando was an hallucination originated by the mind of leo, isnt supposed she would tell dicaprio to search for chuck? On one hand, she tried con convince teddy about experiments, and on the otter hand ( at this point leo trusted in chuck) she alerts him . Why? because Rachel was a materialized person that can differ from Leo's mind and not an hallucination to support leo's fantasy.

  • so his partner betrayed him. but i still think that the monster line was reffering to woody saying that you could live like that if you want we are going seperate roads

  • it's easier to think that he's crazy. it takes more work to make his sane-man

  • how can you be brainwashed into insanity. that is something which can only happens in the 50's. if those noobs are alive today, they'd be hanged for no surprise

  • lastly both him and Rachel tried finding stuff out and they were deemed insane and claimed to have drowned their 3 kids, too many coincidences that point to the fact that something was going on

  • the cigarettes had him trippin like crazy, numerous things point to the set up, first off the lady wrote for him to run, obviously knowing something and telling him to gtfo, 2nd the doctors were former Nazi doctors and he was a former ww2 soldier cmon, next the gun in the lighthouse was chucks not his, and las

  • @captainbannana69 um MAJOR point is the music scene. chuck goes something along the lines "nice music is it brahms" teddy/andrew replys"no its Mahler" brahms was german mahler was bohemian aka czech meaning that the doctor is infact not german and that its teddy who is making this up in his head. also if u didnt realise the word "run" is featured highly in the movie. chuck says that they were not raised to run from a fight, and the patient/nurse uses it and i think its also somewhere else.

  • bad explanation boss....are you nervous?

  • Thanks for the explanation :)! I'm not confused anymore :p

  • This Film makes you wonder. Was he really crazy? Or was he made to belive he was crazy so that he didn't expose the truth. Its really psycologicaly brilliant. I guess the ultimate truth lies with the viewers opinion. I like to belive that he convinced and brainwashed into insanity.

  • @strechmetz Watch the movie again, it's only one ending: he was insane the whole time, notice he had dreams with his little girl Rachel (even tough it was imposible to know her if he was indeed an US Marshall), noboby tried to hurt him, they were all trying to make him accept reality, even the yard looks perfect the next day after the storm( that would also be imposible). It took me some time to understand the ending, you're so right, this movie is indeed "psycologicaly brilliant" :)

  • @slim240293 I do deffinatly need to see this movie again. Its just one of those movies where a second viewing will make everything clearer. Oh and thanks for not being horrible with your comment, i know alot of people on youtube would have been like "dude your retarded blah blah blah" lol.

  • he is smokes chucks cigarettes right from the start on the boat! everytime he tries to take one of his, chuck offers him one. and then they are given totally fresh packs. (they get new clothes, since their clothes were wettened and dirty--> so the orderly even saying something like this: "sorry, your cigarettes are totally wet, so here you get new ones". he even is exchanging intense looks with chuck saying that!)

WHY? (come on, there are hallucinating drugs in it <--- ted is a marshall )

  • you guys are all wrong, he was a us marshall, he showed up, the guy with him chuck. was never a us marshall. you can tell the way he takes the gun out of his holster, he never was crazy. the doc started giving him pills and it was messin him up hard, and they didnt want him to leave because they would have exposed him.

  • @KCtom517 sorry u'v missed it totally

  • 4:02 What the hell was that? o.O

The only thing I don't get is how so many people are confused by the movie. >.>

  • @yarow122 computer...

  • no offense Morphtus, but maybe next time, write things down and put them in order so your not jumping all over the place and are actually coherent.

  • if his theory in his mind is wrong and psycotic, then that would mean there is no lobotomies in the lighthouse cuz thats what he thought. And when he broke in there wasnt...but then at the end they act like they are lobotomizing and shit so what happened there

  • Nice video. Scorsese is the man!

He made the movie from Ted's point of view, and we doesn't understand what the heck is going on until the very end, then it all makes sense.

    GREAT movie.

  • They say he is the most dangerous patient they have, why then would they let him run wild around ward C TWICE? That can not be right lol. Role playing or not, they would not let the most dangerous patient run wild around a ward twice and AFTER he kicked the shit out of a guy lol they left him again

  • if you notice at the end the rachel salando that he talks to in the cell is a nurse at the end of the movie

  • @Morphtus so the fake rachel solando in the cell, she was just trying to act insane and to remind teddy daniels about his wife?

  • @Morphtus thanks genius

  • @Morphtus yep!

i dont understand thought cause the 'real' rachel in the cave said she used to work there as a nurse... so i dont know :S

the rachel that wasnt actually rachel in the cell was she pretening to be mental or what lol

  • + why is 'teddy' told at the end the real 'rachel' dosnt excist ?

if he actually spoke to her and she gave him like the hints and stuff, sorry i reallt dont understand this film :P

  • @Morphtus shut the fuck up hes sane you fucking faggot real inciteful i watched the movie 9 times fuckiing faggot

  • Great explanation! Just watch the movie. Epic indeed.

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh i get it now!! shutter island is a freakin twisted movie! but i get it =] diz video helped

    thanxz<3

  • nice vid

  • Did all the people that did the lobotomy die, or they just forgot everything and kept living with some scars ?

  • Thank u soo much!!!! it was an epic movie! ur explanation helped soo much!! and ur cute btw.. :P

  • Fuck that shit, I would kill my wife at that point.. there's no point for her to be alive, if she becomes THAT sick in the head, seriously.. If you say you wouldn't do the same you're crazy.. I always wonder that myself, what would I do if I get married one day and have kids, what would I do if my wife killed them.. pretty trippy shit.

  • so wait a minute? he was crazy the whole time? then why at the end did that guy call teddy boss?

  • Comment removed

  • @balldogchips He did it because he knew the doctors were observing his behavior . He would rather let the doctors lobotomize him than live with the guilt of killing his wife . Thats why he said the line about "living as a monster or dying as a good man"

  • @AndreaSoledad20 or perhaps what he meant was that he would not compromise, and would not play along with the doctors that run the asylum, and he'd rather die for what he believes in, rather than being allowed to live under the conditions that he pretends to be insane.

  • @born3651 You have a good point , I got that information from a website , It seemed legit because the guy was saying he sat down with the stars and directors and discussed the movie . I thought it was a good explanation .

  • @balldogchips to see if he was still crazy

  • i thought wen he said "wuld u rather live a monster or die a good man" or whatever it was, i thought that ment he'd rather die knowing he wasnt crazie and thats why he went 2 the lighthouse

  • @GuitarMasta5555 He went along with it because he knew the truth and knew that it was too terrible to live with so pretended like he was still insane

  • I agree with your explanation and everything EXCEPT it being a phenomenal movie. I would grade it a B- or 3 out of 5 stars. NEVER call it phenomenal. Worth seeing? Probably not. And probably the worst Scorsese film I've seen. I saw the ending coming from the very beginning, the pacing was poor. I fought off sleep several times, and was hoping there would actually be a twist, there wasn't. Read the book as well. Its much better than the film, but same disappointing ending.

  • @earlbutters how was it disappointing? There is no ending. It's impossible to determine whether he's sane or not.... It's purposely left that one so you enjoy it more, not so everyone can fight over whether he's sane or not.

  • @boondockfan5

well im afraid all the evidence from the movie points towards that he was sane. feel free to prove me wrong

  • @geckoghostg go to town: screenrant(com)/shutter-island-spoilers-discussion-vic-46052/

  • @boondockfan5 yeah I was freaking out when the credits rolled cos i was all like "gimme an answerrrrrr!!!!" brilliant film though

  • When Teddy was searching for Racheal they said they already checked the light house and it was like they didnt want him to no about what the do in there. because they were going to labotuse or whatever him to make him think he is ANDREW

  • I think either the explanation given in this video is true, or the psychiatrists actually succeeded in convincing him he was insane. The world may never know.

  • This is Bullshit i think everyone should have they're own theory if there was one straight forward answer Dennis Lehane would've announced that shit already.

  • I believe leo was teddy daniels who was not insane. The real rachel from the cave couldnt have been an hallucination, because you dont hear new things or learn new information when your hallucinating. She told him about the chemicals used in the lobotomies. In the end, they take him to the lighthouse so that means they really had surgeries that fucked with people's brains. Either leo was Teddy or its one of those films where he could be both characters depending on how you choose to see it.

  • @ANDREWakaTHUNDER thats not true... i didnt read ur whole comment cuz i really DGAF but it wouldnt be unlikely for someone to hallucinate and make up something like the stuff she told him.

  • OK THIS IS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED: THE WHOLE MOVIE IS JUST

MR. ROGERS HAVING A DREAM, now you know and knowledge is power!!!

  • what about the whole thing about whos the 67th patient. if he was the 67th then rachel and the leadis guy woiuld be real. if they not real then there wouldn't be 67, only 66 wich is what the doctor guy said there were

  • @tjgroff the leadis guy is him dumbass

  • @zerosk8er1 k thx man

  • So do they do the surgery in the lighthouse?even though when Teddy went in the lighthouse the only thing there was the man sitting at the desk.

  • THE ENDING IS SUPPOSE TO MAKE SENSE OF THE WHOLE MOVIE BUT THERES A BIG HOLE AND NO ONE SEES IT, why Labotomize him? they aren't labotomizing no other crazy people! The only way the brain surgery is justified is if what the lady in the cave said was true! They really are usiing brain surgeries to wipe out peoples memories!

  • People are really overrating the complexity of the ending. The whole investigation was in his head, the nurse at the end is the same person as Rachel S. and this one is supposed to represent Dolores. The other Rachel from the cave represents more of the real world finally coming to his realization. By the end he fakes going back into his fairytale because he'd rather be lobotomized than live knowing his wife and children were drown. Hence, the final quote and shot of the lighthouse.

  • I don't know about this movie, the ending really interpretative. Maybe he was insane, maybe they convinced he was insane, maybe he chose to be insane to get the lobotomy or get tested on. what I found strange was when they were interviewing one of the female patients, she asked for a glass of water, chuck went to get a glass she immediatley wrote run on his pad, so it was meant for him. and rachel in the cave she kind of threw him to the wolves to avoid her capture.

  • that pissed me off at the end that the whole fucking 1 i just watched was a fake its watching a really really good movie and u really like it then at the end the main charecter wakes up and the thing was a dream thats wat the whole fucking movie is

  • @xJenkiinsXx no its not... everything in the movie actually happens exept when he actually is in his bed dreaming... or hallucinating

  • Why is it that everyone in this movie and everyone commentating this movie say ecscaped rather than escaped?

  • @UrbanLeema chill

  • how dumb r u people> whats there to understand? he was finally cured, however once cured he felt that he could not live with the fact that his family is dead, so he chose to pretend that he wasnt cured (so that he could continue to act as his Marshall character) so that he could die as a good man, he would rather DIe than to live feeling as a MONSTER.

there are no 2nd or 3rd theories, thats the way the film ended.

  • @prince112233 exaaclty

  • Ok i have a question has he really been cured in the shutter island for 2 years or it was all set up cos he has realised what is happening there???Watched the movie but i haven't get that hehe...xD...Please reply...

  • so the medicine that he was recieving what was it for? to make him allucinate? the cigarrates where to make him have ilusions? i dont understand what was the medicine for

  • @alexishalo They originally prescribed the medicine to control him but that made him more violent so they resorted to playing along with Leidis' hallucinations because they think that might cure him. Now, the cigarettes; Teddy Daniels thinks they were being "poisoned" using the cigarettes.

  • @alexishalo i think the medicine was to make him more obedient, so that when everyone on the island play a role into convincing him that he killed his wife etc. thats why he kept saying to them he wont be tricked by them. cuz obviously they act so dumb like when teddy asked where his partner was they tell him he came alone.also when his partner comes back in the lighthouse, he says he was his psychiatrist for two years, when hes only been in the island for 1 week?

  • Oh lol...

Psychiatric medications do not keep people "obedient" not do they cure a mental illness. Much like a lobotomy they work by destroying the mind & body

Effects can range from liver damage, heart damage, permanent sexual dysfunction, suicidal thoughts, obesity, even loss of life expectancy up to 25 years..But they do not cure or even take away all if any of the symptoms.

Thats the real insanity of mental illness, having to ask people who would do that to you for help.

  • Your definition of a lobotomy is incorrect..

It's not removing a few nerves behind the eye, they basically pound an icepick type object behind the eye into the brain & wiggle it about, chopping the brain.

How much they wiggle is based on how ill they percieve the patient to be I'd imagine.

  • jets suck

  • kiefhouse thats what they wanted you to think. you're shown the movie from teddys point of view so you believe what he believes because your restricted from the truth. he blames his delusions on the food and cigarettes but it's really just his withdrawal from his pills that they gave him to keep him tame because he was really dangerous. you have to see it twice to pick up on minor important details

  • why did he blame himself for killing his children?

  • like he dont want

    she was like obsessive

    make him crazy like...

OMG stop saying that...i had stopped seeing the video...

  • Nice job. It's very difficult to cover as much material as you did in such a clear concise manner.

  • you dont know for sure that he wasnt a detective... maybe the mental hospital just told him that and he believed it. you cannot prove wich is true .

  • @JaksProductions

He is not a detective becos Dr Sheean and the rest of the docs wld not have showed a sorrowful expression at the end when he was taken to the lighthouse..

If he is a detective, he would have known that the gang of medics waiting for him in the garden are there to take him to lighthouse for lobotomy, he wld not have followed them..

  • Yeah, upon watching, they did a really good job of explaining what was going on in Leo's mind. however, i saw the last line and was like, awesome. i tried to tell my friends who also saw it what the last line meant, but they just thought i was stupid. Bitches don't know.

  • dude that was an AWESOME explanation, i watched the movie all high so now i get it more, thanks

  • funny thing is he was right they were doing nazi experiments

  • the part that shows that he is insane is when he "shoots" the main doctor and from his perspective blood splatters against the wall and the gun actually fires, then in the real life view there is no blood and the gun is a toy. The part when the lady tells Dr. shien "chuck" to get her water so she can tell andrew "edward" to run.

  • thank you for the video because at the end i was very confused

  • But what about the puking in the ocean/sea and he could not find his ciggarettes so chuck offered him one and when he saw her in the cave she asked if he'd been smoking there ciggarettes

  • So was Teddy insane?? Why did chuck not call him Andrew in the final scene? Instead he called him by his real name-Teddy. I think he was sane.

  • @heliechic yeah and his name isnt teddy that was a created persona to deny he murdered his wife. what this guy is saying is that andrew or edward whatever it is, is actually an intelligent man so in the end he doesn't want to live as a monster so he insinuates they lobotomize him

  • @heliechic

Dr Sheean did not call him Andrew is simply becos Leo's last words were speaking in the mould of Teddy Daniels the detective persona..

Its common sense that when a psychiatrist talks to a multiple personality disorder, he would adress the persona that the patient is currently adopting ..

  • @heliechic

Dr Sheean stood up to call out "Teddy" becos he suspect (or realised) that Leo might be FAKING a reset (back to his mental disorder) just to get the lobotomy (which could somehow relieve his painful memories)..

But Sheean did not stop Leo from going for the lobotomy becos Sheean realise that a lobotomy, after all, is Leo's own conscious choice in the end..

  • He was insane the whole time. The whole plot was to make him grasp reality but you don't find that out til the end. You have to know this and then see it again and you'll get it. At the end, he fakes a reset so he could be lobotomized.

  • he was sane cuz in the end he wanted to die a good man rather then live a monster cuz what they were doing was wrong and he couldnt stop them and also if he was insane why did that one girl make his partner leave to get water so she could right run cuz she knew his partner was in on it

  • @KurdAhmed161

    1) the statement to live as a monster or die a good man is simply a statement of his wish not to live in reality (reality of knowing he murdered his wife), but to live for the rest of his life thinking someone else killed his wife..

    ..pls read my next post..

  • @KurdAhmed161

    2) The woman who makes "Chuck" leave for a glass of water and secretly asked Leo to "run", is simply part of the doctors' plan to play along with the imaginary conspiracy in Leo's mind..

The docs deviced a role-playing plan to go along with Leo's imagination of being a detective so as to gradually lead him to the lighthouse to reveal his real past..

  • @Morphtus Dude, everyone missed the wholllllee point. Except for a few people familiar with MK Ultra. Teddy was sane the whole time. Remember when he couldn't find his smokes in the very beginning? They had him on psychotropic drugs from the beginning. Mind control is very real and can only be used once the original persona is shattered. That was the kicker! Everyone who believed he was insane was under mind control. The few that could see through it knew it. Do you get it??? It was about YOU!!!

  • @Morphtus So in the end he is taken to the lighthouse and has his brain operated on??

  • @Morphtus And Where do they lobotomize him? in the lighthouse where he originally suspected they were performing experiments on the patients, thus proving the conspiracy theory he originally had regarding the island, and if you think that mental hospitals in the 1950's wanted the American public to know they were cutting people's heads open and putting them in vegetative states then you're naive, in any case there's no proof he has any children, his regret and guilt come from different sources

  • @born3651 thats ridiculous for one they show the scene when he kills his wife and since this movie is through his point of view we have to conclude its real and u cant simply assume the lighthouse is where they lobotomize him clearly thats not the place and also they go in thru ur eyes when they lobotomize u so ur an idiot..

  • @idangle6 What are you talking about? They cut the connections to your Prefrontal Cortex in a lobotomy, and figuratively speaking cutting a persons connection to his Prefontal Cortex goes well perfectly for my argument because that part of the brain is responsible for planning complex cognitive behavior, expression of personality, and decision making, not multiple personality disorder, or delusional hallucinatory tendencies,

  • @born3651 i dont care if u explain to me what a lobotomy is they still go in thru the eyes

  • @born3651 u telling me this doesnt make u smart you completely deviated from what i said u simply made a mistake on how a lobotomy is preformed

  • @idangle6 Lol? I don't get it, how did I deviate from the point, I told you the directors of the Asylum wanted to cut off his ability to express thimself and make decisions, because if they don't he'll blow the lid on their operation and tell the public what's going on there, which will interfere with the experiments they're running to create full-proof spies to combat communist governments during the cold war, and if you don't believe the government this happens just watch the Bourne Identity

  • @idangle6 He also had a flashback in which he watches a Nazi die slowly and painfully, in a room, with a record player in the background, and papers falling from the ceiling, then the very next sequence is the first dream sequence in the movie with his wife, who happens to be in the same room, listening to the same record player (only playing different music), and with ashes falling from the ceiling very much like the paper did in the Gestapo's office. So tell me, what's real and what's not?

  • @born3651 touche good point, but still hes most definitely crazy asks the author ask scorsese and every hallucination he has involves fire in some way, watch the movie again ull realize it, hes scene with his wife lacks this element and is obviously the point in which he realizes what is real and whats not he says im andrew laddis and i murdered my wife he means this he knows what he did he knows hes crazy, he ran around an island looking for himself clearly the dude was nuts

  • @born3651 this makes no sense u act like the only place patients could be lobotomized is the light house and yes there is proof he has children all the pictures of them are real also oo w8 u probably think those are fake too another attempt at convincing him hes not crazy? hes crazy its common knowledge theres no two ways of looking at it but u can leave it open to believe so thats the beauty of the movie

  • Teddy was setup The last line of the movie explains it all, "I learned something about being on this island, it''s worse to live like a monster, than to die like a good man". When he says that you have to pay attention to the look he gives to Chuck, a look that tells you that he knows all the stuff they told him was all bullsh*t but he realizes he can't do anything about it and that there is no way for him to ever get off of that island.

  • yeah!thats what i think as well

  • everything was set up to make him sane

  • So you don't think that they made him think he was crazy because when he found the real rachael she told him that they tried to make her think she was crazy and I don't think she was fake

  • @bas3ball33

The Rachel he saw in the cave is not real, its part of his delusions.. so is the dead "Chuck" he saw lying on the rocks..

Think about it, why would a whole lot of mice be living in that cave where they will get drowned during high tide? (coastal low tide rocks are simply NOT a natural habitat for mice). It clearly is an indication that at that moment he is already delusional ..
