@EvilAntic I've looked into that device and the stories surrounding it, I remember not being too impressed with the whole deal. If we were to nuke ourselves into oblivion right now, it would take thousands and thousands of years for something manhattan to disappear and there to be no trace of it. I dont think we were ever even close to being this advanced on planet earth prior to this. The pyramids were probably built by aliens not humans.

I think George's point is that mankind centers everything around itself to the point of arrogance. We think we do what's "best" for the planet and all other life on it when in fact everything we do is actually just to serve ourselves and in the end nothing else truly cares or is going to care. We humans want a clean environment so we can continue leeching off the planet as the parasites we are. It's all self-interest.

In general I agree with a lot of what George Carlin says. However he is way oversimplifying things here. Humans are the ONLY species ever to wipe out (and continues to) other species off the face of the planet. Generalisations about environmentalists is not helpful.

The goal of preserving the environment is ultimately to save our own kind from going extinct, which I think it will in the not too distant future. The human species is self-destructive and the planet will recover after we're gone: it doesn't need saving, we do.

He is talking about us "hurting" the planet, and he is saying that we can't because he is literally talking about the planet as a rock, and makes it seem like a rational perspective about the subject. When saying "hurting the planet" people mean its environment, the current environment is what allows life on this planet, if we destroy that, there's no life
