WOW!! So many memories come flying by. I still own the Melissa album. I spent many days singin' with this one. I never got to see them live though...BIG BUMMER! Check this out! That Melissa album is worth $40.00 to $50.00 on E-Bay! Not sellin' though:)
Great live footage of a legendary gig and band! What a shame that Roadrunner didn't include the WHOLE concert on the DVD that accompanies the excellent re-release of MELISSA! With regards to the comments about CHRISTIAN Metal bands....I don't think their going to let you get your mouth anywhere near their arses, somehow!
I'm kind of sick of people complaining about metal being lame now, or how nothing's original.
I know a guy who has been a HUGE Mercyful Fate fan, since they first formed, and he still listens to TONS of new music too. Certainly, Strapping Young Lad style music didn't exist in the 80's. Songs like "Skeksis" are still masterpieces, being written as recently as 2005.
First of all, SYL is not a "new band." They're a bunch of older musicians. Their singer is going bald, fer chrissakes. I'm glad that they finally figured out a way to cash in on the resurgence of metal's popularity.
Secondly, I happen to prefer bands who are original, who are skilled, who do not rely upon a bunch of fancy computer tricks and digital sequencers to carry their sorry asses, and who actually believe in something besides money.
1. Singer was going bald since his 20's. He is currently 39 years old. How is it a bunch of older musicians?
2."resurgence of metal's popularity", you mean like how Strapping doesn't sound at all like other metal bands, and has been around since 1995?
3.SYL doesn't rely on computer tricks, they don't believe in things like money (he broke up the band at the HEIGHT of their popularity to move onto other projects), and they ARE original. Give them a better chance, they are great.
They sound like EVERY other band which has been around since 1995.
Anyway... you go your way and I'll go my way. I don't like modern corporate metal. I don't like modern corporate ANYTHING.
There are plenty of talented young people in the world today. The problem is that the disgusting music business won't give any of them a chance. If you don't fit into the "marketable formula," these parasites won't even sign you. THAT is why modern music sucks, compared to the days of old.
@Tessmage Seriously, what makes you believe that Strapping sounds like every other band? Especially since Devin Townsend self-produced all of his own material, and thus is ANTI modern corporate metal. Even their very first song, "S.Y.L." is about how much he hates the corporate community, as he had to deal with that crap when he sang for Steve Vai in the early 90's, which is WHY he started his own record label. Seriously, it seems like you don't know anything about the band.
I don't need to know anything about the band. I only need to know what they sound like. And I do.
Am I allowed to dislike them..? Am I allowed to prefer classic metal over the newer crap on the market..? Am I allowed to believe that for the most part, modern metal bands are unoriginal copycats, nearly all of whom follow a very tired and stale formula..?
Like I said in an earlier reply: you go your way, and I'll go mine. Peace.
@Tessmage I'm sorry, but you have to know things about the band to JUDGE those things. You can't call them corporate crap if they AREN'T. That's just ignorance. If you think they suck based off the music, STICK TO THE MUSIC, and nothing else. But each album of theirs is it's own entity. The album "City" is NOTHING like the album "Alien". You have to at least give more than just one music video a chance, and listen to multiple songs off of multiple albums before saying that they suck.
Let me get this straight: you're saying that I need to know the entire history fo the band, before I can determine whether or not I like their SOUND..? Why..? Will the background and politics change the way they sound..?
No, of course it wouldn't. What YOU are showing ME with your comments is that you're hung up on an image and bunch of background hype. I, on the other hand, am simply listening to them. And I was not impressed by what I heard. Not even a little bit.
@Tessmage You don't have it straight quite yet. I'm saying, you can't JUDGE them based on looks, age, and how they are "corporate music" when you don't know ANYTHING about them. It's like me saying Mercyful Fate sucked because they were doing what everyone else was doing (which is FALSE) in the 80's and they were just cashing in on metal's popularity, which is ALSO false.
What I am showing you is that you are basing your opinions on anything BESIDES their music, which is VERY diverse.
incredible. clearly the greatest metal band of that era.perhaps just a more sinister version of judas priest, this lineup was as good as it gets.still unmatched for quality albums, these guys batted 1000 for kick-ass songs.nonstop all the way through. hard to beat, and just downright evil.
1983 - 1984 was the golden age of metal, and I was 13 - 14 years old. We liked Floyd and Zep too, but man metal was so fucking cool at that point - so over the top. Now, it's all been done...
That is fucking bad! The sound is damn good for something so old, and recorded live like that. Thats because they were a bad ass tight sounding live band.
@morbid666100 thanks its a great song, but not what im talking about, im not searching for songs with the minor scale, but with the major scale, (not songs like fade to black, welcome home sanitarium etc.) but just happy songs
wow they really are great
