@DragonToko its kinda complex and i dont understand it all yet, but if theres some heat & quartz is right quality you can get a polymer deposit in specific patterns. forming on the surface of the quartz, nasa are experimenting with it to litrally paint quartz with the focused light that may one day replace cuicuits. they found with different types of lazer they can deposit organic compounds in a very specific patern ,able to create optical curcits, these are very fine micro thin lazers tho.

@SuperBigBigCheese The stronger the better and more expensive. Red stationary laser (not pen hand held type) would be cheaper and more reliable, but less visible in day light, anyway if you need to engrave the wood, I'd suggest to start with 300 mW models. Let me see what I can find for you.

Yes, depends where you buy it. YOu can easily buy 5 mW with 100mW label, even 1000mW label, or likely some 20 mW with 500 mW label. Best way - find wholesale laser supplier from China and ask them to send you sample of whatever you like. Pretend that you are going to order 100 pieces later. They will send you good piece and price will be OK.
@hoblywobly This effect you will normally see if laser was overheated before. laser Diodes "afraid" of overheat. That's why don't keep them on for more than few seconds. If was overheated then it will go dim right after start. You can't fix that.
@terorvlad Can you pop baloon? Can you feel slight heat on your skin if you point it to your upper lip of your mouth? This is heat sensitive spot. If yes than great. I am not sure what kind of other 50 mW lasers you have. Who knows wheather they are true or fakely labeled. Again, pen type lases are not recommended to run for over 10 seconds consequtively because of produced heat. Their construction doesn't provide enough heatexchange.

It does pop balloons without black spots and I can feel the heat on my lip (which I thought is not possible) But my point wasn't that I can make a burning laser out of a 5mw, I was just saying that potmoding solves this problem. And about the overheating: I know it doesn't have the best design to prevent the diode from overheating, but for a 5mw that can pop balloons I think its better this way. I know I sounded like a jerk in my last comment but I just wanted to let you know.
@terorvlad I don't think you sounded like a jerk, but thnks for letting us know : ) In fact there is no physical limitation on current that you can send through the laser diode. The only limitation is the heat that kills it. So if you manage to cool down your 1mW toy with liquid nitrogen or even a cold water maybe you can make some 1 Watt device why not.. Don't forget to share with us on Youtube.
@hoblywobly or it maybe your batterys as the doide uses the power at the start then the current drops because the diode has used what is left in the battery.
@nikobiker17 get some lithium ion batteries and use a black bin liner/bag, it needs to be thin plastic. i have a True 30mw green and with fresh lithium ion batterys and at close range, it can poke a hole in black tape and slice bin liners :D
@cass304 Yupp. Absolutely. Short distance to to baloon ensures more stable dot - means it can heat up one particular spot for a long enough time. Not jump all around and can't heat up one spot. Goodness, forgive me my english : )
Make sure you buy true watt laser. but 50 is not the real power toy. Use 200, that is bllody dangerous fun, and use red goggles. Yes, my 50 one, will pop balon with black dot on it from close distance (less hand shakes). another thing you can do is attach any lense in front of the laser and focus beam into a "needle sharp" spot. That is very powerful trick.
@behzadbhandari i got it too and its too low of mw to burn things... but to pop a balloon it helps to have a dark color and always draw a black dot and then it should pop like in this video

Look at Dragonlasers and SKYlasers, they are both in china and both ship to the US. then there is laserglow and optotronics IN THE US that are legal. Also the lasers have to be FDA compliant to be sold in the us, had enough yet?

Because it is the cheapo chinese sellers that cant, because they wont pay for the licence to sell them... Look at Dragonlasers and SKYlasers, they are both in china and both ship to the US. then there is laserglow and optotronics IN THE US that are legal. Also the lasers have to be FDA compliant to be sold in the us, had enough yet?

Thats a common misconception. the IMPORTING of lasers over 5mW is illegal in america. You can have a laser as powerful as you want.

some hand lasers are labeled as 50, or even 1000 mW, but in fact they are not. Need to know where to buy. Check out my ebay stuff: Item number: 190347052602
for example.
Funny that sometimes it can burn a hole in a baloon and air will just leak out. maybe depends on a baloon : )
