I found out on a few occasions that, "Friends are hard to find when they discover that you're down." Sad, but true. And yes, "God bless little children while they're still too young to hate."
such a wonderful song, I was lucky enough to catch Tom in concert at the Valley Forge Music Fair in the 70's and now I have an old dog who is ailing it still brings tears to my eyes.
This song will always remind me of my dad, every time I play it I am catapulted back to him. Hope he is allowed play his guitar where he is now :) RIP Dad.
I grew up with this song. I hadn't heard it in about 30 years and man this song packs alot of truth. They don't make songs like this anymore. That is too bad. That is what is wrong with us, as we can't stop and take the time and make a product that is well thought out and simple. This song is simple and to the point, but with all the political correctness we can't seem to stick with the truth, but this song reminds us of the importance of the truth. Tom T certainly gave us a gift.
@TheOldcraftsman I hear you, been thinking similarly for a few years now, and understand much clearly now that Labor is Honorable. And that when we working stiffs can't see the products of our labor directly, something changes in the daily life. Also, some of us haven't appreciated the profound influence of what Craftsmanship is to the quality of the things around us. Whether good furniture, safe machinery/technology, or songwriting. I see I'm not alone. Have always loved this song! cheers!
grew up with this song thanks to my father and foir that i am truly blessed . in this day and age of force-fed radio bullshit i come back to real song's such as these and hope to pass this song to my daugther so she might understand one day what a real song is
grew up with this song like u thnx to my father and for that i am truely grateful . just hope that i can pass on my love of " REAL " music to my daugther instead of the force-fed bullshit on the radio nowdays . sadly7 , they just don't make song's like this nemore and that is sad
god bless u tom , and thank-you for all the happy times u have given me
I listen to a good country station down here in Florida called 93.7Kcountry. It is a great station that plays all kinds of new country music that I enjoy listening to. On Saturday nights they do this thing called Saturday Night Gold Rush, where they play the older country music. I sit down every Saturday with a notepad and write down the songs they play. This is one I heard last week and man you can't beat the good stuff.
Tom T. Hall was the real deal. No phony nonsense. This is real country music. And I grew up in the home of country music (Bristol, TN) so I grew up with it.
I'm a lifetime rock n roller but this song kicks ass. I love it.

Should they make a film based on the theme of this song, I would cast Morgan Freeman in the role of the guy cleaning up the bar.
