I'm not a die rad fan of Journey. The Infinity album is a sort Machine Head, a Dark Side of The Moon or a LZeppelin II .. a classic and I love it. This particular song is my Journey favorite and I always thought it was a song written by S.Perry .. who wrote this song ? Was it written by R.Fleischman ? It blows my head no matter who sings it. The video is awesome, thank U for sharing !!!
@robertfleischman thank you for replying, thank you for sharing all the videos you up load at youtube. this song is really fantastic ... it use to inspire me to write when I played in those type of school/garage bands.. that was a long time ago. best wishes, juan
@robertfleischman I love your music. I live in Pensacola FL and there is a really cool venue here in downtown Pcola called Vinyl Music Hall. Please come rock out at Vinyl!! We love you!!
I am no longer a Robert Fleischman virgin. This was my first Fleischman video. This was AWESOME!! I love Steve Perry, but I definitely love the rock feel of this as opposed to the calmer Perry version. (At least, from the 1978 video I saw of his.) I also think that Neal Schon must have been born with a guitar in his hands. You ROCK! Thank you, Robert, for sharing. : )
I first cringed listening to this version of the song, but to be fair, this is a live performance in which a live engineered recording was not intended, so it's not going to sound polished and clear as the studio mix to which we all grew up listening. I was a fan of both incarnations of Journey, even if the Perry stuff did get a little too mellow, and on the bubble gum side, I do think it was brilliantly written by Schon, Rolie, Perry, Valory, Smith, and later Cain. I did miss the Hammond B-3.
Dude !!! I know this is not Steve Perry but Fuck !! It's Rober Fleischman !!! All I kept thinking while listening to him sing is the bitchin' vocals he laid down on Vinnie Vincent Invasion Album. That album just kills !! I'm leaving now and crankin' some Vinnie Vincent with Robert on vocals !! Great job on the Journey though Robert \m/
This is pure GOLD! Whether or nor you like Perry or Fleischman, this is just gold.
Here's the thing; to have this video is monumental to any Journey fan because it's a piece of history, and little known history at that. Even to the average Journey fan.

It's comparing apples and oranges, but listen to this and then listen to Perry's version of the song. As far as lead vocals, there is no comparison. Perry's soul, inflection and overall excellence is stunning.

I agree. though Union Jacks was a pretty good LP. But he kinda reminds me of Kenny G. Ever see or hear Cain interviewed? He sounds too fucking nice and is smiling non-stop. Like Kenny G, no one can be that fucking happy all the time.
I disagree. They went to hell when they brought Steve Perry aboard and started relying more on showmanship and appeasing 14-year old girls than on musicial chops. When Journey brought Perry aboard, I dropped them like a hot potato.
Went to hell? Isn't that a little strong? Infinity, Evolution, Departure, Escape and Frontiers have iconic songs that defined arena rock. However, none of those albums never completely dispensed with the extended, proggish instrumental workouts of their pre-Perry efforts that you probably prefer. Their showmanship, marketability, and hits simply overshadowed those elements of grit and integrity. Bottom line, it those albums are "hell," then make me a reservaton for one.
WOW! Everyone should give credit where credit is due.
Not only did Mr. Fleischman contribute to the writing of one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs in Journey's catalogue, but HIS vocal performance laid the groundwork and served as the model for Perry's interpretation.

when i heard this song for the 1 time my heart began to beat dunno really y.And when i heard the lyrics at the begining I remembered these lyrics that I heard once and that my father was desperately searching for which song thy belong...
A REAL writer?? What about "Don't Stop Believin'"? "Open Arms" "Lights" and ON and ON and ON. Perry wrote or co-wrote hit after hit. What do you mean a REAL writer? LOL, but even if SP had NEVER written a song,he is heads and shoulders above this guy vocally. If he were that good, Herbie wouldn't have replaced him. I am a singer and teach music and vocal instruction. I hear nothing "Put on" about his voice. His range was incredible. You may not like his STYLE, but that is your opinion.
As I said, I meant no ill will, & thank you for allowing me to have my own opinion. Yeah, without the help of the other writers in Journey, SP gives us that great classic rock hit Oh Sherry. The founders of Journey cut their musical teeth with one of the greatest musicians of our time-Carlos Santana, but after SP joined they went bubble gum pop (which sells records -case in point, Britney Spears- & HH knew that). That's why all my friends and I loved SP when we were 10, but now, not so much.
WTF. As much as I love Perry's voice, Robert was more of a powerful hard rock singing like Plant, Gillan, and Daltrey. Perry was more soulful. I love Arnell and the new Journey CD
Yeah, I guess I would, too. Until this I'd only seen one clip of Fleischman singing with Journey and all he could do was SCREAM! It was simply awful, but this isn't too bad. But, I am a diehard Perry fan: to me, there is no Journey without him.
I think I finally figured out why I don't like Steve Perry's voice- after hearing this song sung by the REAL writer, Perry's voice is just so over-the-top sappy, like he's dripping with puppies and sugar. It's annoying to me. I prefer the more mature and real sound of Fleischman's voice. Steve Perry lovers are entitled to your opinions & I mean no ill will, but I work with voices for a living, and perceptually, Perry's voice is very put-on, Fleischman's sounds real.
I think I figured out why you can never be a real critic. Have you really listened to Steve Perry? I think somebody needs a new computer because my cat sings Winds of March better than your real man. By the way, Perry drips with soul and fire. Whose voices do you work with...barely-a-tones? If they paid you, you need to give them their money back.
If "Journey was nothing before Perry" and now that I've seen Robert "The Original" Fleischman and knowing that he originally sang/wrote/co-wrote a good portion of the hits on Infinity I realize that Fleischman would've been "The Voice" if only Robert stayed or shall I say If only he got along with the band long enough to produce more songs of this caliber. The guy obviously has soul too and and I get the feeling that he writes better songs than Perry.
Fantastic video, thanks for posting. I've been so ignorant all these years.. I thought there was a lot of S.Perry in this song but now I see not. This song blows my head since the 1st time I played it. Thanks Robert for this masterpiece ! Personally I miss the first years with G.Rolie when it was a great rock band, afterwards it became too commercial IMO, I can listen to Infinity all night long but can't do the same with the albums written after Rolie's departure. Cheers.
Great job Robert!! The real journey fans no what's up!! You are the best fit for there original bay area rock sound.Steve Perry sucks dude!!!! Rock on Brother!! Great song writing !!!
How can you say Perry sucks. Journey had it's following before Perry but who sold the millions of records. Journey was nothing before Perry. Fleishman is a decent frontman but Perry kills him.
Journey went mainstream pop and catered to 12-year old girls when they signed Steve Perry. I know, I was one of those 12-yr old girls who bought everything stamped "Journey" because of Steve Perry. Teens & tweens buy albums- Hannah Montana had the highest grossing concert tour last year.. does that mean she's more talented than Billy Joel or the Eagles? Dollars and records sold doesn't automatically equal talent or quality! Now that I'm older, I prefer the older Journey, pre-Steve.
Robert, I don't know when you'll get to read this, but I have to say I LOVE YOU MAN!!!! I only wish I could hear the demo of "Wheel In The Sky" with your voice. I never thought anyone other than Steve Perry could sing it, but that was only until I discovered that you wrote it. Both you and Vinnie Vincent remain the most underrated songwriters of our time, but in my heart you ROCK at the top alongside Led Zeppelin.
I love the intense dramatic feel of both this song and "Wheel in the Sky" which was another Fleischman tune, he is a powerful songwriter. The "Infinity" album has some of the most musically interesting pieces because of it.
excellent song.Rob ,You rock.Love it,also love the vinnie vincent Invasion first album you did which I would consider to be aclassic.I also like your Guitargedon with vinnie vinnicent. The song invinceable is very inspiring for me. Rock On
I don't care for this version at all. Robert has constant pitch problems, and he can't even begin to hit the notes that Steve Perry can. He doesn't have that soulfulness and emotion that Steve exudes from his pores. But I have to commend Robert if he did write this song. It is truly beautiful, I would just rather hear Perry singing it.
Good point and after going on a cruise and drinking with the guys from Journey, I'm picking it has a lot to do with the hold Perry had over the other members, ie; I want a song writing credit if I put my vocal signature signature on the song and slightly re-arrange it.
Perhaps I would have as well but Robert did not. He pressed on and wrote music scores for Disney, Nike and has a fantastic set of CDs on his own. He gets royalties on the stuff he did with Journey and him and Steve Perry are best friends. Robert is a hell of a guy!!!
Why was Robert let go from Journey??? I don't understand this. He seems like a great vocalist. And then I read somewhere that while Robert was touring with Journey, that's when they added Steve Perry to the mix when they already had a singer????
I heard that Herbie Herbert brought Steve Perry in on a tour and replaced Robert Fleischman in the middle of this said tour. Don't know if it's true or not, could be just gossip. But, that's what I heard...
Congratulations! You cowrote one of the most beautiful and haunting songs of the 70's. I have enjoyed seeing and hearing the videos you've placed up here on YouTube. They are important documents of your role in making Journey a great band. I agree with many who have pointed out that you were (and are) a very talented songwriter/singer who would have offered the band much more depth as a writer than they sometimes showed later. Many of your songs are epic-that's one reason I love "Infinity."
This is great, a fan that can except that it isn't all just Steve Perry... i personally love the pre- Journey days, not many other fourteen year olds who can say they have all the Journey lp's... i love Journey for their music... and i'd see Steve Augeri, Gregg Rolie, Jeff Scott Soto, one thousand times just too have the oppurtunity to hear this great bands music!
Robert does not need to compare with Steve Perry,he is in a class by himself. Robert wrote this song. Steve Perry doing it is considered a crumb. Perry's rendition sounds like a funeral march. Most of all, if it were not for Robert, there would be NO Steve Perry,so even devout Perry fans owe this much to Robert.
A funeral? With all due respect to Mr. Fleischman, who co-wrote this song, I think Steve Perry does the song justice by adding so much more emotion and soul to the song...plus his perfect vocals.
This guy doesn't even come close to Steve Perry! Infinity would not be the Masterpiece it is without Steve singing. Steve is "The Voice" of Journey, no two ways about it!!! Steve's version sends chills down your spine!! Love you Steve!!
There is NO comparison to this guy and Steve Perry! Steve blows this guy away anyday. Infinity would never have been the Masterpiece it is without Steve. He is "The Voice" of Journey and no matter who they try to get to replace him, without him, the MAGIC is gone!! Love ya Steve!!
Say what you want but Steve Perry ROCKS! No disrespect to Robert but Steve isn't the "Voice of Journey" for nothing! Robert has his own style and Steve has his.
Jeff Scott Soto is an amazing entertainer, sadly though he does not fit in Journey, at all. Neal should have preserved Augeri by not touring relentlessly. He wasn't Perry, but he was damn good...
How does Soto not fit in with Journey? He can actually sing with power, unlike Augeri's inability to hit any high notes or sing with as much power without his voice cracking. Journey should not have to decrease touring due to the poor vocals in Steve Augeri. Check out thier performance with Augeri on the Today show if you can find it. Dissapointing at best.
to quote herbie herbert their longtime manager, they toured three times as much with Augerie as the did with Perry. Make no mistake, I have been a big Soto fan since his days with Yngwie, I do not feel he does anything for the older Journey stuff. One long time fans opinion, nothing more..
This is only the second time that I have heard Fleischman singing. I heard him doing a tune Only for You. Great singer, I wonder what would have happened if he had stayed with the band.
This song is a completely different song here. But I agree with the posters that like Steve Perry's version. He does put more emotion into it. That's the reason why he was so great at what he did. No one compares to Perry.
What a nice surprise finding this, I had no idea Robert originally sang one of the greatest Journey songs ever. Made the hair on my neck stand, very nice!!
A lot of you guys just don't get it. If it weren't for Robert these guys would have been fired from the label back in the 70's. To compare Robert, Perry, Augeri & Soto is just idiotic because they are apples & oranges. If this band would have some good songwriting today they wouldn't have to keep alive as the karaoke band that they are. A band with any merit can keep up with the times and continue to produce hit music. They should be ashamed of themselves.
WOW thats some rare journey stuff , i thought i had everything on journey but i dont have this, where did ya get this from and how i get a copy of the whole concert
I'm sorry, but the Steve Perry version is much better in my opinion. Just the way the verses are sung and the emotion he puts into the vocals. However, I'd like to say thanks to Mr. Fleischman for the work he did put into the songs that became what we got on the albums.
wow, I knew Robert had a part with the Infinity Album, but didn't realise how much was complete before Steve. Thanks Robert for the behind the scenes education.
I prefer Steve Perrys sound but Robert WAS the original official lead singer, if the "New" Steve can't cut it i would think it would be fitting (yet awkward maybe) that Robert take the lead of the current Journey, that is, if Steve Perry is for sure never coming back...
I am respectful of those that like Steve Perry more, but I will still tell everyone that will listen that Robert is my all time favorite! The only real sin is that somehow Robert's efforts seemed to get lost in the shuffle and as a result, Robert is undercredited. I feel that Robert deserves SOMETHING. That's all. :o)
I'm a Steve Perry fan....But this guy sounds GREAT too! He's just so different from Steve....I personally like Steve better....BUT this guy does this song nicely....It just Steve IMO sounds much better doing it! Then again its two different singing styles...Personally I like the "Voice of Journey" (Steve Perry) better!
This just goes to show how much song writing talent was thrown away for the sake of that toucan, Steve Perry.
I hope Robert's new CD blows Journey away. It should be short work, as Journey is falling apart. People say Steve Augeri is gone! Oh, here's Jeff Scott Soto! Oops! We don't know if he'll stay, Hey Deen can you sing one for us? Who can we get to fill the void?
I would have guessed New York, but according to my other 1/2, It's somewhere near LA. He was born in March, 19xx. Was this a song that his mother wrote for him? It kind of has that feel. With Perry singing it on Infinity, it sounds like a funeral march.
Where did Fleischman come from? He sounds like John Lawton of Lucifer's Friend. Its obvious why a guy with a voice like this was recruited by Journey to spearhead the band's redirection. Its also clear that Fleischman was the prototype used to build the Perry-era Journey. Fleischman's style is edgier than Perry's, more abstract. If Perry's voice was satin and velvet, Fleischman's was black leather.
This is the original version performed by the original writer/singer/performer. If you listen to the other version done by someone else, it sounds depressing. THIS version is something to get exited about!!!

That's why all my friends and I loved SP when we were 10, but now, not so much.

WTF. As much as I love Perry's voice, Robert was more of a powerful hard rock singing like Plant, Gillan, and Daltrey. Perry was more soulful. I love Arnell and the new Journey CD

haggardfan you have to admit though i would rather take this dude than the current loser they have now, don't you think??

Yeah, I guess I would, too. Until this I'd only seen one clip of Fleischman singing with Journey and all he could do was SCREAM! It was simply awful, but this isn't too bad. But, I am a diehard Perry fan: to me, there is no Journey without him.

I think I finally figured out why I don't like Steve Perry's voice- after hearing this song sung by the REAL writer, Perry's voice is just so over-the-top sappy, like he's dripping with puppies and sugar. It's annoying to me. I prefer the more mature and real sound of Fleischman's voice. Steve Perry lovers are entitled to your opinions & I mean no ill will, but I work with voices for a living, and perceptually, Perry's voice is very put-on, Fleischman's sounds real.
kb1dt6 3 years ago
I think I figured out why you can never be a real critic. Have you really listened to Steve Perry? I think somebody needs a new computer because my cat sings Winds of March better than your real man. By the way, Perry drips with soul and fire. Whose voices do you work with...barely-a-tones? If they paid you, you need to give them their money back.

I agree robert deserves credit for hat he did for the band.
But to be honest steve perry is the voice for a reason...

Thanks for posting, Robert. This song has one of the best bridges in rock & roll.

Great song writing !!!
bd1956 3 years ago
Dude,
How can you say Perry sucks. Journey had it's following before Perry but who sold the millions of records. Journey was nothing before Perry. Fleishman is a decent frontman but Perry kills him.
JAndrade80 3 years ago 5
Journey went mainstream pop and catered to 12-year old girls when they signed Steve Perry. I know, I was one of those 12-yr old girls who bought everything stamped "Journey" because of Steve Perry. Teens & tweens buy albums- Hannah Montana had the highest grossing concert tour last year.. does that mean she's more talented than Billy Joel or the Eagles? Dollars and records sold doesn't automatically equal talent or quality! Now that I'm older, I prefer the older Journey, pre-Steve.
kb1dt6 3 years ago
Robert, I don't know when you'll get to read this, but I have to say I LOVE YOU MAN!!!! I only wish I could hear the demo of "Wheel In The Sky" with your voice. I never thought anyone other than Steve Perry could sing it, but that was only until I discovered that you wrote it. Both you and Vinnie Vincent remain the most underrated songwriters of our time, but in my heart you ROCK at the top alongside Led Zeppelin.
lingling86 3 years ago 2
I love the intense dramatic feel of both this song and "Wheel in the Sky" which was another Fleischman tune, he is a powerful songwriter. The "Infinity" album has some of the most musically interesting pieces because of it.

I just don't think his voice is as good as SP. I think it is good but not at all fit for this song...

BeakyPeartree 4 years ago 7
I'd like to know why in the hell Steve Perry has writing credit for this song on the Infinity album when this was already written before he joined?
spike14501 4 years ago
Good point and after going on a cruise and drinking with the guys from Journey, I'm picking it has a lot to do with the hold Perry had over the other members, ie; I want a song writing credit if I put my vocal signature signature on the song and slightly re-arrange it.

frambrianna 4 years ago
Perhaps I would have as well but Robert did not. He pressed on and wrote music scores for Disney, Nike and has a fantastic set of CDs on his own. He gets royalties on the stuff he did with Journey and him and Steve Perry are best friends. Robert is a hell of a guy!!!
G4331 3 years ago
Why was Robert let go from Journey??? I don't understand this. He seems like a great vocalist. And then I read somewhere that while Robert was touring with Journey, that's when they added Steve Perry to the mix when they already had a singer????
saugusg16 3 years ago
I heard that Herbie Herbert brought Steve Perry in on a tour and replaced Robert Fleischman in the middle of this said tour. Don't know if it's true or not, could be just gossip. But, that's what I heard...
Kerjo123 3 years ago
Its probably true. Plus Herbie probably didn't get along with Robert.
pdeleon9 3 years ago
pdeleon9: Herbie most likely didn't get along with Robert. Also heard that he didn't get along with Steve after awhile either.
Kerjo123 3 years ago
Congratulations! You cowrote one of the most beautiful and haunting songs of the 70's. I have enjoyed seeing and hearing the videos you've placed up here on YouTube. They are important documents of your role in making Journey a great band. I agree with many who have pointed out that you were (and are) a very talented songwriter/singer who would have offered the band much more depth as a writer than they sometimes showed later. Many of your songs are epic-that's one reason I love "Infinity."
windsofmarch 3 years ago 2
This is great, a fan that can except that it isn't all just Steve Perry... i personally love the pre- Journey days, not many other fourteen year olds who can say they have all the Journey lp's... i love Journey for their music... and i'd see Steve Augeri, Gregg Rolie, Jeff Scott Soto, one thousand times just too have the oppurtunity to hear this great bands music!

Fleischman was one of the singers offered the lead position in Asia.
Jelperman 4 years ago
Robert does not need to compare with Steve Perry,he is in a class by himself. Robert wrote this song. Steve Perry doing it is considered a crumb. Perry's rendition sounds like a funeral march. Most of all, if it were not for Robert, there would be NO Steve Perry,so even devout Perry fans owe this much to Robert.
G4331 4 years ago 3
A funeral? With all due respect to Mr. Fleischman, who co-wrote this song, I think Steve Perry does the song justice by adding so much more emotion and soul to the song...plus his perfect vocals.

I saw Robert's new band in Las Vegas and they were hot! Check out his new album LOOK AT THE DREAM.

This guy doesn't even come close to Steve Perry! Infinity would not be the Masterpiece it is without Steve singing. Steve is "The Voice" of Journey, no two ways about it!!! Steve's version sends chills down your spine!! Love you Steve!!
Jpennine 4 years ago 4
There is NO comparison to this guy and Steve Perry! Steve blows this guy away anyday. Infinity would never have been the Masterpiece it is without Steve. He is "The Voice" of Journey and no matter who they try to get to replace him, without him, the MAGIC is gone!! Love ya Steve!!
Jpennine 4 years ago 2
Say what you want but Steve Perry ROCKS! No disrespect to Robert but Steve isn't the "Voice of Journey" for nothing! Robert has his own style and Steve has his.

Fleischman made Journey sound as an English band, he was very much influenced by Roger Daltrey.

Jeff Scott Soto is an amazing entertainer, sadly though he does not fit in Journey, at all. Neal should have preserved Augeri by not touring relentlessly. He wasn't Perry, but he was damn good...
nizzt 4 years ago
How does Soto not fit in with Journey? He can actually sing with power, unlike Augeri's inability to hit any high notes or sing with as much power without his voice cracking. Journey should not have to decrease touring due to the poor vocals in Steve Augeri. Check out thier performance with Augeri on the Today show if you can find it. Dissapointing at best.
crcarrico 4 years ago
to quote herbie herbert their longtime manager, they toured three times as much with Augerie as the did with Perry. Make no mistake, I have been a big Soto fan since his days with Yngwie, I do not feel he does anything for the older Journey stuff. One long time fans opinion, nothing more..
nizzt 4 years ago
I hope that this concert comes out on DVD. I would love to hear songs from the first 3 albums with this singer.

johnsmdm 4 years ago
This song is a completely different song here. But I agree with the posters that like Steve Perry's version. He does put more emotion into it. That's the reason why he was so great at what he did. No one compares to Perry.
caribbeanorchid 4 years ago
What a nice surprise finding this, I had no idea Robert originally sang one of the greatest Journey songs ever. Made the hair on my neck stand, very nice!!
laurenrick22606 4 years ago 2
A lot of you guys just don't get it. If it weren't for Robert these guys would have been fired from the label back in the 70's. To compare Robert, Perry, Augeri & Soto is just idiotic because they are apples & oranges. If this band would have some good songwriting today they wouldn't have to keep alive as the karaoke band that they are. A band with any merit can keep up with the times and continue to produce hit music. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Rickberg1966 4 years ago
I'm sorry, but the Steve Perry version is much better in my opinion. Just the way the verses are sung and the emotion he puts into the vocals. However, I'd like to say thanks to Mr. Fleischman for the work he did put into the songs that became what we got on the albums.
RyuHayabusa06 4 years ago
wow, I knew Robert had a part with the Infinity Album, but didn't realise how much was complete before Steve. Thanks Robert for the behind the scenes education.
santacruz3600 5 years ago
This guy is much more of a progresive rock type singer, not an AOR singer like Steve Perry. And as Journey are an AOR band he fits better.
This guy is good but Perry's version of this gives me chills when he does the verse.
adamcoffey 5 years ago
I prefer Steve Perrys sound but Robert WAS the original official lead singer, if the "New" Steve can't cut it i would think it would be fitting (yet awkward maybe) that Robert take the lead of the current Journey, that is, if Steve Perry is for sure never coming back...
Survivor87 5 years ago

Man, this so good !!!!
felipegama 5 years ago 2
This just goes to show how much song writing talent was thrown away for the sake of that toucan, Steve Perry.
I hope Robert's new CD blows Journey away. It should be short work, as Journey is falling apart. People say Steve Augeri is gone! Oh, here's Jeff Scott Soto! Oops! We don't know if he'll stay, Hey Deen can you sing one for us? Who can we get to fill the void?
This man, that's who! -Fleischman!
justpeachy1111 5 years ago
I would have guessed New York, but according to my other 1/2, It's somewhere near LA. He was born in March, 19xx. Was this a song that his mother wrote for him? It kind of has that feel. With Perry singing it on Infinity, it sounds like a funeral march.
I like Robert Better.
Goatberg 5 years ago
Where did Fleischman come from? He sounds like John Lawton of Lucifer's Friend. Its obvious why a guy with a voice like this was recruited by Journey to spearhead the band's redirection. Its also clear that Fleischman was the prototype used to build the Perry-era Journey. Fleischman's style is edgier than Perry's, more abstract. If Perry's voice was satin and velvet, Fleischman's was black leather.
sicksylvia 5 years ago
Robert Fleischman was Journey's FIRST official lead singer. He is also my personal favorite of all time.
Your comments are well put! You should call yourself "smartsylvia"! You are not sick at all!
Smiles to you! :o)
P.S.
I would practically sell my house to hear him do "Any Way You Want It!" It wouldn't be bubble gummy then!
