Got my Bionx and I love it. It's intuitive and makes bike riding a blast. My only complaint is that I'm a big guy, and at full power going up decent hills the battery drains quite quickly. In otherwords, I wish it had more range. A second battery is out of the question for me, as they are $1,200!
My favorite part is 1:15 where he says "So no energy is lost" and then he goes on to say "efficient at 89%". Well, apparently some energy is lost. Roughly 11% of the input would be my guess.
Thank you for show off your math skill. When Alex mentioned about "no energy is lost" he was refering to regenerative braking, the mean the energy get recover back to the battery "no energy is lost". Before you criticize others people's work, you should try to know your topic before writing.
That setup wouldn't have a lot of moving power... You would have to pedal to get it to start moving... It works great when the wheel is free to spin like in the video, but put it on the ground and it's a different story.
This works just like a computer fan. They can spin fast, but you can easily stop them. And if you hold a computer fan they don't try very hard to get them selves spinning.
@powerinmotion Your right, I have not, I am not that wealthy. These are a great design/idea, but I'm skeptical of just how good they are. So since your the all knowing one... I know these use the same principle as a computer fan motor, and for a computer fan to have a lot of torque it would use a lot of amps. So tell me, how long will one of these things assist you at FULL load before draining the batteries?
I don't mean to be an ebike snob. And I don't look down on people. Yes, Bionx is expensive, but it is one that stay out from the rest when it come to technical advance. And we would be very happy to answer your question. You will not able to hold this motor by hand, either you will flip to floor, or you will have your hand broken. A computer fan had not torque, the only purpose is speed to move air. This motor had both speed and torque.
@powerinmotion Now that I like to see, numbers. About 20mph, not to bad, makes me wish I could afford one. What would be an average persons max speed with the motor with pedaling? (20 is a little slow for me) :-) Another question, can you switch between a couple modes? Because in videos I have watched, I thought it only assists you while your pedaling.
@mattg889 You can't get assistance above 20mph; anything above that and it's like it's not there at all. It's best thought of as a tool to assist you in tough conditions (uphill or into the wind, where you'd struggle to hit 10mph normally), rather than a continuous use item. That is, unless you don't mind averaging 15mph or less. The more expensive models have a variable throttle.
yes, it is a single wheel system, you can watch our other video that talk about dual wheel system. You can get something for nothing, the regenative brake can only recover 5 to 10% energy.
anytime there is conducting metal around the electric motor core and magnet you loose a lot of effeciency trough heat.(yes the gearing are metal and will affect the motor.
I like they are system but I would use as energy source the battery type that Quantya use for they are e-bike or "DeWalt DC9360 Heavy-Duty 36V Nano Phosphate Lithium Ion Battery" but I don't know much the Motor can take. ist 36V or 72V to much?
The new Sindrive technology advertized on the Bionx website i'm guessing is refering to a new software algorithm that allows the motor to run smoother. It is my understanding that E Plus motors have used Sine control algorithms from day one and have moved to using more advanced vector control algorithms. Additionally, E Plus motors put out 1000W and are a lot more fun to ride. I've ridden both the Bionx and E Plus systems and love the feel of the E Plus.
Correct. What I like about the Bionx system is the ability to recharge the battery when cycling downhill and this 200% assistance thing, remarkable. Plus I get the impression that it can be quite fast on the road, or does that depend on which package I go for?
I baught a new electrically assisted bicycle back in March. I'm very happy with it, but after reading about the Bionx system I'm beginning to regret it.
i have a question and i hope that someone can help me to find the correct answer!
i would like to know if the front wheel-motor works as free like the rear motor? i mean, when i pedal without using the motor, does the wheel spin easely or do i need to create more power in order to move the WHOLE motor?
Bionx motor does had a bit of drag, it is not very notifiable. But you also need to understand construction of the motor. In order to have regen braking system, it has to have some drag. If you want to design regen braking motor, it has to be brushless, gearless motor. If you have geared brushless motor, it had no drag, free wheel during motor are not active, but you can't have regen braking system.
Bionx doesn't truly offer front motor configuration. Mainly it lose the torque sensor. You can special order front motor, but you are losing one of important feature.
yes, you can, but it will increase drag with wind vanes and slow you down. Which will not work very well. And the amount voltage that you get from wind vanes will not able generate a lot power, which again you will not able recover much energy from it.
looks like an excellent system thought about to have some kind of switch for on / off road and get some higher wattage models and options LiFPO4 batteries maybe.
What would happen if the battery is fully charged and I drive down hill for a while using the electonic break? Does it get hot or does it overcharge the battery or does just the electronic break not work then? Im asking because im living on a hill and always would drive downhill first.
That is very good question. The system had an over charge protection, it will stop charging the battery. We have never run into the problem of overheat due to regen. However, if two - three condition combine at the same time, extreme hot weather like 40c+ on hot road, and go down on a long steep hill. It can possible over heat the system. But this can also happen to car as well.
The regen system will slow down the motor during down hill
Is it possible to completely recharge the battery without ever having to plug it in? I understand it can be recharged when going downhills and braking. Is that enough to fully charge it over a roundtrip commute?
no, it is not possible to recharge completely. May be between 2 - 10% recharge depend on the level of regen is set and the how long the down hill will be.
Yes, almost any bike. As long as the rear frame dropout fit 10mm, and 135mm in wide. You can watch the installation video which will give you some idea.
Wow!!! That is sooo cool! How much would a Wheel and battery weigh ? Have you heard of anyone using it with a wheelchair? It seems like it would work well... THANKS.
wheel/motor weight 9lbs, hard shell battery weight 8lbs.
Yes, it has been done on wheelchair in two configuration. hubmotor wheels on both side of the wheelchair, and front wheel hub motor act like attached bicycle front wheel. Both configuration that I mentioned was not using Bionx motor.
Once there was a guy name Trevair Snowden had put two hub motors onto a Quad downhill bike.
You can think about Bionx is a close integrated system, where Crystlayte is an open system. If you have standard bike and wants the lightest system, then Bionx is the choice. If you want make customization, custom bike, wanted a differ type controller, battery, etc...Then you want to go with the Crystalyte.
sr8hate, ? You could make this for eighty bucks ... a one-of? Wow, I don't get out of bed for $80.00. This thing is a well designed power source, motor combination, (albeit with possible spoke problems). I await your eighty dollar version on youtube!
yes, it is. If you take a brushed motor using the same configuration, your distance on brushed motor will be much shorter about 15 - 20% shorter. A brushed motor had only 60 - 70% efficiency.
Well, it's been 3 months of riding (681km so far), and guess what, broken spoke today. In 9 years of riding bikes I have never broken a spoke. I was riding along on the bike path as I do every day. Obviously there's an issue here. Has this wheel been improperly engineered? I'm now wondering if I was a fool to spend $1500 on this system.
You need to address this issue with your dealer's warranty.
We have many customers who use bionx, never had any broken spoke problem. The spoken are taper, 14g by the rim and 13g by the hub, which is best spokes on the market.
You also need to check the tension of the spokes once a while. If your dealer didn't tension or true the wheel, that could be one of cause of your problem.
I plan on addressing it with my dealer (Bike Doctor in Saskatoon) very soon. I'm skeptical that they did true the wheel or tension the spokes as they didn't adjust the gears or brakes (the bike was virtually unrideable when I picked it up due to the gears), or straighten the handlebars. It was a new bike that they assembled out of the box, and I think they just slapped it together because they were busy. Not an excuse in my books...we're all busy. Thanks for the reply.
From my experience and 1 or 2 others Bionx riders, spoke is a problem. You need to re-tension every month or so. You will become an expert to align wheel and you dont need fency tool
I spoke with one of Bionx guy in a bike show. He just pretended never heard about this issue
Well, this is turning into a full-blown buyer beware. Got the bike back from the Bike Doctor all fixed up and re-trued, took it to work the next day and guess what, not even 2km in, another BROKEN SPOKE. Now I'm no bike expert here, but there's got to be an issue with the quality of the spokes on this thing. They've offered to re-spoke the entire rim with some swiss-made spokes I've never heard of. Will keep you posted.
i am moving from one country to another and the legal regulations for top speed are different. Can i reprogram the computer to reset the maximum speed myself?
Just thinking of getting one of these to combat my windy 22km ride to work. I've heard from some dealers that people are having issues with the spokes breaking after only a few months of use? Is this an issue with these?
no, we never had any issue with the spokes. bionx use taper 13/14 gauge spokes. One of stronger spoke on the market. Having a motor on wheel also mean you travel a lot more then a regular bike, so you should check the tension of the spokes once a while as basic maintainance.
Ok. Is that something that would be covered by warranty if it did happen? Is the battery included able to be drawn down completely, and is it possible to wreck it by over-charging?
the spokes are garantee if it's not from abusif use. The wheel can be send back to BionX where they will release no charge. For the battery, the charger is intelligent and will stop when the battery is full.
I have a bionx 350watt kit. After 200 miles of normal on street riding, I found three spokes broken on the non-chain side of the hub. My dealer replaced them and retensioned the wheel for free. Now, barely 200 miles later, I discovered anotherbroken spoke on the opposite side of the hub. We are thinking either Bionx got a bad batch of spokes or they are not spoked properly during manufacturing. I believe the wheels are spoked by a machine. It looks like there's a problem here.
I took mine in and had the same thing done (re-tensioned, replaced). They were very good about it and it was done quickly, but if I have more broken spokes I will be asking for a completely new rim (and you should too). I'm not a real heavy guy (185lbs) and I ride on paved bike trail, so abuse is not the issue here.
My bionx did not break at the spokes. The spokes are fine and strong. The gear spocket that is connected to the hub broke. The metal housing at the spindle just cracket all around and the spocket was out and not conneted to the unit. Basically if I peddle I would spin the chain but nothing would move because the housing was cracked. Has there been any problems like this?
If it's normal usage, it should not be crack. but it's over stress, but pedaling extreme hard with a lost chain, by snapping the pedal and chain. Yes, you can crack the freewheel housing. Have you spoken to your dealer where you purchase from? What have they say? If you purchase from us, it would have been under warranty. Best Regards!
Lucky for me it was still under warranty. But my chain on my bike never came off, broke or was never lost. I only use the bionx for when I really need it you know up hills. Bionx has a two year warranty which was nice of them to replace my wheel and hub with a new one. The new spokes I noticed are thinner which means absorb more shock and the hub is stronger. The previous wheel and hub had stronger spokes which could me all shock went to the hub and stressed it out.
I have a bionx at 1600km the motor rear wheel broke near the spoket. Is this a common thing with the bionx. My battery works good no problems. I think the rear hub needs to be re designed I feel there is a week like with the design cheap material used
Have you inspect the tension of the spoke after 1,000km? You do need to check the tension once a while.
Bionx spokes are tapered. Which mean it is 14 gauge (standard size to fit for rim) at the rim level, and 13 gauge at the hub level (stronger). The spokes are high quality.
We have a video that should the factory shop in Quebec, which we will publish it once we have time to edit the video. So, be sure to watch for new posted video!
Can't wait for the batteries to improve to 10x there current capacity :P I get about 30-50 Km range on my hybrid style bike with 36V Li-Ion batt. Oh, and I have >300Km now on my third motor. My second motor lasted 2000 Km before something broke inside...Clunk/scraping in motor = not good!
No, I am floored by this and amazed. Would you build a more powerful one and a generator? I think a combination of a rear mounted Bionix and a front hub motor with a generator would be divine.
if you check out our online store, we have other system that are dual motor. or just check out our dual motor youtube video. However, you can't get more energy then you put into. So it is possible to re-gen some energy, but not all of it.
Wow this battery pack sure beats my bulky lead acid unit. I also have a brushless motorized bike, though not from Bionx. The motor works very efficiently and smoothly, with minimal maintenance.
Hmm... So your pedaling speed controls the rpm of the motor? Interesting.
We carry Lithium Polymer and Lithium Phosphate battery that are suitable for most of the conversion kit on the market. As matter of fact, we are the only vendor online that carry the top 3 brand of electric bike conversion kit. you can find out more in our web site:
HI Can you tell me about the battery? How many volts does it produce, what is the amp hour rating? What is the maximum sustained current? How many watts of power can it produce?
The Bionx website says that "assistance is provided only when pedaling". It would be nice to just be able to coast to take a break, without losing speed.
Yes you can start the motor from stop without pedaling, some modification need to be done in the controller, but all good BionX store have access to that. For the ON/off there the throttle you can push or not but there the proportional assist too. Assit 1: 25% of your power. Level 2: 50% Level 3: 100% level 4: 200. So you can adjust as you want!
Observer bien la roue libre comme elle tourne croche...cela est du au fait que les couvercles du moteur bion-x sont tres mal machine !!!qu attendez vous???
Please watch our dual motor controller in youtube. Bionx is a close system, you can't hook two motors. You will not run faster with dual motors. Each motor will have smaller load. If you want to go fast, you need to increase voltage. And our dual motor link:
As I said in my question, if you use two systems, one for each wheel, would that increase your range by double? And by two systems, I mean two motors, and two batteries of course.
yes, it is possible. Whenever you run dual motors, each motor is working half of the load, as a result, it use less power, and will increase range. But the better solution is to run dual battery in parallel. We have done this in our "Super bike from Banff to Calgary" video. You can check it out:
Got my Bionx and I love it. It's intuitive and makes bike riding a blast. My only complaint is that I'm a big guy, and at full power going up decent hills the battery drains quite quickly. In otherwords, I wish it had more range. A second battery is out of the question for me, as they are $1,200!

Hi...
is there any chance, that BionX will have sometimes also plunge-mount for the pinions ? (i don´t know how you call this in English)..
i mean the kassetts
in the moment you can only use screwed-on pinions which is technologie from yesterday.
it seems not to be a unimpossible thing, there is already a motor which uses kassetts for years (but needs more than 135mm at rear width)
and now there is also one that fits into 135mm
when will BionX switch ?

From my experience and 1 or 2 others Bionx riders, spoke is a problem. You need to re-tension every month or so. You will become an expert to align wheel and you dont need fency tool
I spoke with one of Bionx guy in a bike show. He just pretended never heard about this issue
1943vermork 3 years ago
Well, this is turning into a full-blown buyer beware. Got the bike back from the Bike Doctor all fixed up and re-trued, took it to work the next day and guess what, not even 2km in, another BROKEN SPOKE. Now I'm no bike expert here, but there's got to be an issue with the quality of the spokes on this thing. They've offered to re-spoke the entire rim with some swiss-made spokes I've never heard of. Will keep you posted.

could one install a bionx on a 20" bmx?
ktownwreck 3 years ago
yes. you can install bionx on a 20" bmx, but why would you want do this?

Just thinking of getting one of these to combat my windy 22km ride to work. I've heard from some dealers that people are having issues with the spokes breaking after only a few months of use? Is this an issue with these?
aleader0933 3 years ago
no, we never had any issue with the spokes. bionx use taper 13/14 gauge spokes. One of stronger spoke on the market. Having a motor on wheel also mean you travel a lot more then a regular bike, so you should check the tension of the spokes once a while as basic maintainance.
powerinmotion 3 years ago
Ok. Is that something that would be covered by warranty if it did happen? Is the battery included able to be drawn down completely, and is it possible to wreck it by over-charging?
aleader0933 3 years ago
the spokes are garantee if it's not from abusif use.

It looks like there's a problem here.
schpoinkschpoink 3 years ago

827582758275 4 years ago
Now I understand!
Best Regards!
powerinmotion 4 years ago

I think the rear hub needs to be re designed I feel there is a week like with the design cheap material used
827582758275 4 years ago
Have you inspect the tension of the spoke after 1,000km? You do need to check the tension once a while.
Bionx spokes are tapered. Which mean it is 14 gauge (standard size to fit for rim) at the rim level, and 13 gauge at the hub level (stronger). The spokes are high quality.

I am sorry? As in you are amazing that what this can do for you? Or this is a lousy product?
powerinmotion 4 years ago
No, I am floored by this and amazed. Would you build a more powerful one and a generator? I think a combination of a rear mounted Bionix and a front hub motor with a generator would be divine.
analyzingfunny 4 years ago
if you check out our online store, we have other system that are dual motor. or just check out our dual motor youtube video. However, you can't get more energy then you put into. So it is possible to re-gen some energy, but not all of it.
powerinmotion 4 years ago
So if you put lance armstrong on that bike he would go like faster than a car or something?
Degr8n8 4 years ago
generally speaking yes. But you will need to modified crank set ratio to get the maximum speed.
powerinmotion 4 years ago
Wow this battery pack sure beats my bulky lead acid unit. I also have a brushless motorized bike, though not from Bionx. The motor works very efficiently and smoothly, with minimal maintenance.
Hmm... So your pedaling speed controls the rpm of the motor? Interesting.

Paul,
We carry Lithium Polymer and Lithium Phosphate battery that are suitable for most of the conversion kit on the market. As matter of fact, we are the only vendor online that carry the top 3 brand of electric bike conversion kit. you can find out more in our web site:

man!!! i want this motor!! hey can you use this motor is cars? or like electric go karts, or do they only work on biclycles?
JUKIO01 4 years ago
first of all, you can purchase 3 - 4 differ type of hub motor from our web site.
hub motor is not new, there have been a few companies whom try to bring hub motor onto automotive market: GM, Siemens, and Mitsubishi
GM had made a hub motor and put it in in S10 truck
Siemens had in-wheel motor, just search for "Siemens VDO" in youtube
Mitsubishi had been making hub motor for awhile. search for "i MiWV" in youtube.

HI Can you tell me about the battery? How many volts does it produce, what is the amp hour rating? What is the maximum sustained current? How many watts of power can it produce?
myndenway 4 years ago
The Bionx website says that "assistance is provided only when pedaling". It would be nice to just be able to coast to take a break, without losing speed.
myndenway 4 years ago
Yes you can start the motor from stop without pedaling, some modification need to be done in the controller, but all good BionX store have access to that. For the ON/off there the throttle you can push or not but there the proportional assist too. Assit 1: 25% of your power. Level 2: 50% Level 3: 100% level 4: 200. So you can adjust as you want!

Observer bien la roue libre comme elle tourne croche...cela est du au fait que les couvercles du moteur bion-x sont tres mal machine !!!qu attendez vous???
houze29 4 years ago
Please watch our dual motor controller in youtube. Bionx is a close system, you can't hook two motors. You will not run faster with dual motors. Each motor will have smaller load. If you want to go fast, you need to increase voltage. And our dual motor link:
watch?v=wnwWpjXh5jc
powerinmotion 4 years ago
As I said in my question, if you use two systems, one for each wheel, would that increase your range by double? And by two systems, I mean two motors, and two batteries of course.
myndenway 4 years ago
yes, it is possible. Whenever you run dual motors, each motor is working half of the load, as a result, it use less power, and will increase range. But the better solution is to run dual battery in parallel. We have done this in our "Super bike from Banff to Calgary" video. You can check it out:

If you used a Bionx system on both wheels of your bike, one for each wheel, would your range at a given speed be twice as much?
myndenway 4 years ago
As you have seen from this video, there aren't any pedal. We tied down the throttle at full speed.
You can turn on/off, but it is unnecessary if don't select the throttle (speed control), it doesn't consume the power.
powerinmotion 4 years ago
Can you start from stop without pedaling? Can you switch the motor on/off at will to conserve battery power?
