I hate to be the one to say this, but personally I think "Earth Hour" is little more than a publicity stunt. It's a way of saying "Look at me! See how much I care about the environment?" Plus it's an excuse to guilt-trip people who don't do it. I care about the environment, sure, but not for the environment's own sake (an arbitrary standard). Rather, I care because it directly affects the quality of my own life.

Pollution and smog enters my lungs and can cause cancer, and that's why I don't like it. But a species going extinct? The climate changing? Species go extinct and have been going extinct for the past 4 billion years. The climate has also gone through numerous changes, some of them pretty drastic, during that time. Meteors have struck it. Volcanoes have erupted on it, killing lots of life. It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's only bad if it has a negative effect on us.

I propose that instead of artificially picking one hour to turn off our lights, we go ahead and use our lights during that hour if we need to, but make a habit of turning them off when we don't need them. I mean, why bother even having electricity in the first place if we're not going to use it? Making a habit of using electricity only as needed would not only save people money, but it would also do more _ACTUAL_ good for the environment than some silly one hour publicity stunt.

Earth hour is a cute idea on paper, but you do a greater good in the longer run just by replacing all your bulbs with the energy efficient ones (which equates to something ridiculous: like 20 hours of keeping your lights with regular bulbs off).

Also, if you lit a candle in place of that turned-off light, you actually increased your carbon footprint.
