@careradio, The traditional method of teaching math--i.e., explicit instruction, worked examples, and sequential presentation of topics and skills whose mastery builds upon itself, is a proven method, and test scores available from the mid-40's (Iowa Tests for Basic Skills) show a steady increase in math scores until the mid-60's when they began a decline which can be attributed to a variety of factors.
May I please point out that none of us know if so called "proper" instruction is actually the right way, we just think it is because it's the way it's always done.
This kind of teaching does not take into consideration students who do not have a solid foundation in basic math. If students are tossed into this type of learning without a solid foundation they become the members of a group who just write down what the group is doing without true understanding.
@NHTPC I can't judge how good or bad this is because nothing actually says WHAT the problem is. How much juice they need to serve 240 campers. Okay...how many times are they being served? How many cups are they drinking each time they are served the juice? If the whole question is "How many cups of orange juice does it take to serve 240 campers if they each drink 1 cup" the answer is 240 :P

It's no wonder parents are chomping at the bit to get their kids out of public schools and into charters, or privates, or homeschools.
