I like your videos I have subscribed to your channel and I look forward to learning as much as I can. I'm just a beginner but I've made my second batch with a true brew home brewing kit, it was fun and enjoyable but really want to take this to the next level and learn as much as possible about all grain brewing . I find it very interesting even the boring bits as you say. Can you suggest any books to supplement my learning? Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
Get a print copy of Palmer's How to Brew and also grab Brewing Classic Styles for recipes. If you want even more, I really like Mosher's Radical Brewing and Daniel's Designing Great Beers.
Hey Bobby. I see the beer Grinch has already started on you. Anyway, I highly respect your attitude and diplomacy. As a teacher, I think you will help thousands of people get into all grain. I support you all the way, and look forward to learning from someone who knows how to teach. Congrats on your new baby. Cheers!
Great Timing Bobby, I am ready to start all grain brewing on our next batch. We have been grain steeping for the last few batches and have a total of about 10 batches under our belt.
I will be looking forward to hear your series on All Grain brewing.
Great stuff Bobby, keep the videos coming! It is interesting that this one "know-it-all" guy enjoys bashing others of this art, calls you son, and claims to have such a vast resume that rivals all of us. He was only born 2yrs before you, and most of us were drinking beer while he was in diapers. For the newbies that want to learn the art, ignore the BS and follow the people that want to help you. Peace out.
You didn't mention water, son. Especially the ions calcium and bicarbonate, which are the two biggest players. Beer is 90+% water, I think its relevance in the arts is quite strong. Best to start with a water crash course before you get into diastatic power, enzymes, etc, etc. Capish JoeyFromTheBronx??
Nige, I have three videos on water already but the point of the primer series starts with much more general topics. Answer me this, can I make a mash with malted 2-row and crap water? Yes. Can I make a mash with crystal 20 and perfect water? No. I do not question water's relevance in beer but bigger fish to fry for my extract brewing friends.
@BobbyFromNJ Crap water is subjective. How crap? You can mash with ANY water, doesn't mean the end result is going to be worth a shit. Not knowing whats in it(water) can turn good techniques into shit beer. A fundamental understanding on how water effects both the mashing process and the taste of the final product are key to producing consistent, quality beers.
@nige4958 Water is important, but it's far, FAR secondary to getting your process down. Learning your system, hitting temperatures, etc and knowing why you're doing all those things comes well before messing with water. If it's palatable and not full of chlorine and the associated chemicals, it will be just fine.
You know who loses pissing matches right? Everyone. I may mention the importance of water chem in one of the upcoming videos but at best it will refer to the other three I already did.
@BobbyFromNJ I agree that you don't need to discuss water chemistry. Your other series was comprehensive and clear. What else could you possibly cover on the subject? Get your water tested, find out the numbers for the style that you want to brew, grab that handly little spreadsheet, and play with the salts. Done.
I'm totally stoked for your new batch of videos. Thanks for using new technology to reach a new generation of brewers. I still resource "How To Brew" but I'm a much more visual/auditory learner so videos like this and others are especially helpful. Thanks again.
I can't wait for this series of videos, I think it is a great idea for maybe giving some of us extract or partial mash brewers going all-grain finally.
Good video maybe you could throw some info on yeast varieties and what works good for you I'm still new to all grain brewed about 7 batches so far and have used only dry yeast but plan on some liquid. The heat has slowed my brewing down too, can't wait for fall. CHEERS
Hey Bobby! First of all, congratulations on the new edition to your family! I noticed you commented about the audio being out of sync. I watched this video before I saw your post and I didn't even notice but once I read that comment I went back and looked and sure enough it is off just a little. I would never have noticed if you hadn't said anything though. As far as your new series I will agree with everyone one else you're on the right track. I know it will be helpful to all of us. Cheers!
Congrats on the third! Make sure to wear your ring!
These series will be great. I want to learn new styles and reading them in books isn't the same as seeing them made.
I will start documenting my equipment as everything I've done is homemade and I like to say well done. I have a few awards also but ALWAYS keep an open mind.
I just moved out east (Boston) and would love to meet and shake your hand some day as you've really helped me over the past few years.
Looking forward to this series and yes, you are definitely on the right track as far as I'm concerned, the things I want to know more about, basically everything, lol. The audio seems sync'd up now, probably just took youtube a long time to process it to figure out a proper codec. Thank you very much!
hey bobby it sound a great series coming up. im new all grain brewer made 3 batchs now and love it i got two 2 vid have a look and see you think. love your vids
Really looking forward to your series, I am rather new at AG and I need to step my knowledge up on how to choose what type of mash to use when. Hoping you can clarify that up for me. Congrats on the new edition to your family coming soon.
Sync is good...I am really looking forward to this...BIG TIME!!! I have brewed enough AG brews now that I am comfortable in the basic procedures and getting my basics down and not making little mistakes anymore. I am ready for some sick detail! Knowing you, these videos will be really good, and I will probably end up downloading all of them and burning them to DVD!! (with your permission, of course!!!) Congrats on the family expansion!!
Is it just me or is the audio a bit out of sync? WTF? I'm really hating on the Kodak Zi8. There is absolutely no editing software that can handle the output file format.
Congrats on child #3-to-be. I'm looking forward to this series. I have successfully made the move to AG, and now I'm looking to improve the final product. This should work great for me. Thanks for putting out the effort.

Right, water is important. No disagreement here. I think where that learning needs to occur is up for debate. It's not what I'd call a basic topic.

@nige4958 Why don't you make your own videos on water? Cut the bullshit, and just talk about it and demonstrate it without shaking your ass.

@hypnolobster Far secondary? Trying telling that to the guy who uses distilled water for his first all grain batch.
