We were all sitting in different rooms watching the same thing...lol Don't forget, in NY/NJ, TV consisted of 7 channels not a few hundred and it was all free, so we were all on a similar page/channel if you watched TV.
Basically, TV consisted of Channels 2, 4,5,7,9, 11 and 13, or wcbs, wnbc, wnew, wabc, wor, wpix and wnet. That was it but it was always entertaining.
I ditched TV and cable in 2001 so everything after that, I've never seen.
In the 70's, a Brazilian broadcasting (TVS, now SBT) used a copy of this, the same music, the same spinning columns, just the words changed to portuguese.
Translation for the below post: "In addition to a version of this vignette has been used by the former TVS Rio de Janeiro, I learned that another version also aired on TV Record, São Paulo, at the time Silvio Santos sent along with the Machado de Carvalho. Who has that of Record?"
The Eight O' Clock movie either preceded or came after "Twilight Zone" and "To Tell The Truth," both of which held the 8 p.m. slot for a while. I remember the time they showed "The Birds," which I caught during the scene where the crows gathered on the jungle gym, and then chased the kids when they started running! Scary!
Oh, the memories. :) I went to school with Bill Jorgensen's daughter, Tracy. I never really watched this movie block much, I was more a ABC 4:30 Movie fan. Mostly I saved WPIX for Tom & Jerry and stuff like Magic Garden, way back...
This clip ran when I'd get in trouble for bringing a slide-rule to class. (cheater!) Today, kids think a slide-rule might have something to do with Tokyo Drift or skateboarding. :(
I remember this growing up in Newark New jersey. But i cant remember the year. I think it was the 70's but dont know what year they actually started airing this. Boy this really makes me feel old !
I remember being at my Grandma's house watching tv in the "tv" room and all the adults were around the dining room table eating cake and drinking coffee..God do I miss those days! This TV intro sure brings it all back..just like sitting at Grams
@Felineblood Boy did you hit the nail on the head- I had the same experiences! They were simpler times. I used to go over my cousin's house to see the Wizard of Oz once a year because we didn't have a color tv and he did!! LOL
Why are these so much better than anything on tv now ? These bumpers were nice to listen to when they were new. If they put this back on now ,people would love it . Is it the 25 seconds thats costing them,i really dont get it..
But I guess its ALL ABOUT THE MONEY now. Those 25 seconds can bring in alot of revenue for the networks. Especially now since they do the "split screen" crap with the ending credits.
I do miss these promos though. They were cool. There were quite a few good ones out there but I think the ones by WPIX (ch. 11 New York) were my favorites.
Sadly it is the 25 seconds that are costing them. Since most of these stations are owned and operated by corporate moguls and networks that are extremely profit conscious, sadly such bumpers are a thing of the past. it is about ratings and money. They do not even run credits now with these fast forward split screens.
burbank, perfectly said. This vid was from an era when each NYC local network had a unique character and identity.
This was also long before they had the obnoxious station ID logo constantly in the lower right of the screen. Those ID logos are needed today because, in an age when the weather channel shows documentaries instead of weather and the history channel has reality shows, you can no longer tell by the content of the programming what network you are watching.
I think the logo on the lower right was created because of the advent of video recording and the fear that it would be copied and sold. With the logo being there permanently, it would discourage this act. That's what I heard once as the reason for this.
Remember that inane "Pix" game where you would call in and say 'pix!... pix!.... to hit the whatever on the screen? Videogame infancy.... Eight O'Clock Movie followed by news then Odd Couple at 11 and Honeymooners at 11:30? Am I correct Earl?
It sure was for the late 70's also. I remember that classic lineup: Action News followed by The Odd Couple at 11pm, The Honeymooners at 11:30pm, Star Trek at midnight and The Twilight Zone at 1am. Ahh, the sweet memories.
"It sure was for the late 70's also. I remember that classic lineup: Action News followed by The Odd Couple at 11pm, The Honeymooners at 11:30pm, Star Trek at midnight and The Twilight Zone at 1am "
And just try finding that kind of classic lineup on any cable or broadcast channel today.
In the late 70s I was just a kid and my bedtime was at 9pm. So I wasnt allowed to be up that late, but I remember the afternoon reruns of classic tv shows. Sweet memories indeed!
yep, remember it too well, the games were all from matell intellivision. If you did real well, you won a $25 saving bond, if you did poorly , you won a" in the chips, new york" board game.Pix , pix, piiiiiiiiiiiiixxxxxxxxx! ha ha .
The first film that I ever saw on this program was "Pride of the Yankees."
The other movie that always comes to mind when I think of the Eight O'Clock Movie is "Casablanca," which is one of the few Warner Bros. films that WNEW didn't have the rights to back then.
As of 1975, "Father Goose" was on WPIX, having been previously on WNBC in the last few years of "Movie 4." I seem to recall, also, Mr. Grant's "The Bishop's Wife" airing on 'PIX under the "Holiday Movie Special" banner.

"To Have and Have Not" I saw on "The Eight O'Clock Movie," but I could have sworn I saw "Father Goose" on WNEW.
