I first heard this song sung by Shirley Horn, and I have to say that both Shirley's version and Joao's version (which is the original, right) are so amazing in different ways. Joao blessed the world with such beautiful music!
@markoza138 hi markoza, the original version is by Bruno Martino, an Italian singer and composer very appreciated by joao gilberto. check it out and let me know if you liked it!
Claude Nougaro wrote french lyrics but these lyrics had no connection with the original italian lyrics (Nougaro tells an autobiographic love affair when he was teenager).
@dangervich your translation should have had more positive comments. It captured the essence of the original poem and even lent the English language a generous portion of the latin warmth.
From a young age I have treasured the Amoroso album. A friend of mine from highschool introduced him to me on a record. I was mesmerized from the start. Ogerman's arrangements were so new to me then. I am now 47 and I still favor this album. Buy it, if you do not have it ! Greetz
Both the Claus Ogermann (1-77) and the Claire Fischer (6-91) dates really brought the best in his gentle voice and playing. The "Amoroso" album is now over 30 years old, and it never fails to satisfy.

mskeating7 2 years ago 20
@mskeating7 Do you mean, silence, so to listen? He loves
How can anyone hear him and not shriek with joy?
This man who hears all, plays his music all his life, better each time, hears all sounds, have you not heard him?
so I have to ask, again, what do you mean, silence?
ohyppest1 1 year ago
@ohyppest1 he means silence because he is moved so deeply the only response is the beating of the heart

Part 2:
Another winter comes and
All the petals dying on the rose
A thousand petals lie beneath the snow—
At least perhaps some peace might come again.
Ah, summer—
You gave your fragrant scent to every flower
And filled us with a love of so much power
So I could slowly perish in its pain!

My translation in English:
Part 1
Ah, summer—
Your warm embrace is like a kiss remembered
Once full of love but now its just an ember,
Like something in the heart one wants to lose.
Ah, summer—
The sun that woke and warmed us every morning,
That painted splendid sunsets every evening
Is useless now except to sear my soul.

La musica italiana "vera" è questa; da noi si parla ancora di "negramaro", "apicella" e "baglioni" vari.

So beautiful. Sounds like a Johnny Mandel arrangement. He was married to Astrud (sp?) Gilberto. (The Girl From Ipanema.) Great video. Thanks JJ
KenJWC 4 years ago 2
The arrangement is the same that on the Gilberto's lp "Amoroso" (with stings, "Fender Rhodes",...). It's by Claus Ogerman.
This beautiful italian song as also english lyrics by Jon Hendricks and french lyrics by Claude Nougaro.
