Anyone who thinks songwriting is something easily done is sadly mistaken. Songwriting is a Gift. Lightfoot will always be one of the greatest writers, and lyricists in history. Thanks for the upload.
This song brings back memories back when Gordon Lightfoot performed live at the Concord Pavilion, Concord, California, in the early 1990's. It was a treat for me.
Don't worship the dead - fear God - he sank the ship and he killed the rebels. Fear God and OBEY HIS COMMANDMENTS - this is the whole duty of man - give glory to HIM for the hour his his judgment has come!
I remember when this happened and the release of GL's song about the tragedy. His lyrics make you feel as if you were there going through it with the men. Even today, I still get chills listening to the song which always brings a few tears. GL is my fav folksinger of all time. It's good to know he's still out there playing for the people. God bless him.
Being born in the U.P. this song has always intrigued me. As a kid I had the 45 and would play it non-stop. Although I was only 5 and vaguely remember when she sank that November 10th, Gordie lyrics surely remind me.
Don't know how many times I've heard this song over the past 31 years, but it still gives me chills. What lyrics -- "Does anyone know where the love of God goes/When the waves turn the minutes to hours?" Sure wish I'd written that:) --
i can't forget the line "the wind in the wires made a tattletale sound and a wave broke over the railing..." -- i wish i's written that too.. lol, jk! :D
Most of the lyrics just put the facts into verse, and then he would punctuate them with great lines like that. And to music that hit the exact right tone.
I also appreciate the idea of Superior sending her secrets to the other lakes, who all know this story now.
Terrific stuff. I never see Lake Superior and not think of this tragedy.
this particular song of gordon's captures and conveys the sense of mystery, awe, and spirituality that surroundsand emanates form the great lakes in a way that only those who have been there can ever really understand - absolutely magnificent
He's the Ronald Reagan of songwriters!

"God" and "fear" are oxymoronic in my lexicon.

On the contrary, they are synonymous. A means to keep a populace under control.

I don't think these are appropriate comments for this thread. Just enjoy the music.

I wore out many a vinyl cuts on the local juke boxes playing this classic.
This is one song that is haunting, true and everlasting. GL is still one of my favorite writers/composers/singers/hard ass!
