Yes he gave cash to the man who made the shoes. It is a cultural expectation because Westerners are relatively quite rich compared to the Belarusan peasants who are quite poor. And a reciprocal gift besides. This may be difficult for a Westerner to understand but try to see it from the Belarusan perspective - they are quite poor. Giving them cash is a sign of kindness and sympathy for their poverty.
I don't want to bad-mouth Bielski, but one of the reasons they had less casualties was because their primary goal was saving Jews and not fighting Germans.
LISTEN TO THESE PPL AMERICA!!! LISTEN TO WHAT PPL WHO WENT THROUGH THESE THINGS HAD TO SAY, " YOU ARE NOTHING WITHOUT A GUN" YOU BETTER REMEMBER THAT AND LET THIS EPISODE AND THESE PPLS FACES BURN INTO YOUR MEMORY SO YOUR BETTER PREPARED FOR WHAT IS TO COME........peace.
@BeyondChange It struck me as odd as well but I guess that's just because in every other culture I've seen Ray visit, although they all had much less than these individuals, they always gave freely and generously without expecting anything in return.
It is common practice to pay for hospitality and such when visiting 'locals', it just isn't depicted much on Ray's shows. Might be food, cash or trade-goods. A film-crew rocking up for a fortnight will affect a subsistence economy massively, it's only fair they pay their way. These trips are organised well in advance, there's usually little reason to make the exchange in front of the cameras.
@aarrcchhoonntt lol dont dis him he is pretty bad ass and is without a doubt a survivalist. he shows you how to get out quickly, efficiently and shows you how to overcome extreme obstacles. (its probs because he was in the army and thats why he seems so rushed and extreme all the time lol) HOWEVER this doesnt mean i am favouring him xD i think ray mears is awesome and has a lot of knowledge too =D
@00Avenger17 He's an idiot. I won't list all the retarded things he did because that would take too long. Instead go watch his urban episode, where he blows up a door by putting a burning rag on a 120 liter gas canister. It's so very, veyr wrong. I built fuel-air bombs using gasoline and propane in my time and what I ca say for sure is that a burning rag would NEVER, EVER cause the rupture of a gas tank, and definitley not in the manner depicted, and if it would, it would be completely different
@aarrcchhoonntt yeah i watched that episode too and i agree that one was just stupid shit srsly lol xD i agree really unprofessional =( but yeah as you say some/most of the stuff he does for the show but some is pure genius and takes skill, guts and survival instinct which not many people have these days sadly =(
@00Avenger17 Before we go on with this conversation - what are your qualifications in survival? Mine are: Mountain survival training in JS2028, Green Infantry Tactics and Survival Course in JS4016 and several internal courses in 4018.
@aarrcchhoonntt wowowowowowow nice =P lol on that basis you win =) ive done several survival courses, im an adventurer =D, im outside most of the time and done some army "style" training =P but with qualifications you win for sure but i still stick to my opinion =D thats impressive though =P i want to get some training like you =)
@00Avenger17 He's a moronic dipshit who does everything for the show. Putting himself intentionally in dangerous situations and doing things the hard way is the exact opposite of what ANYBODY would do in a survival situation. He's a showman doing a show for armchair commandos who only see the outdoors on pictures.
@aarrcchhoonntt bahaaa =D nice lol yeah i kinda agree with you lol tehee xD nice one but srsly i know he does some crazy shizzel but he does them for if anyone every finds them in situations like them. What if you were in a crazy hard situation and you'd only been watching Les (who is da master at survival) you wouldnt really know what to do but if u'd watched some of bears shows you might know what to do because that is what he deals with... =P
Thank you for sharing..The film was Defiance I think with Daniel Craig..this was a wonderful evening spent watching, the joy of the first friction fire to the heartache from 60 years felt by these people..awesome viewing.
While something like this happening again seems unlikely, no one is ever certain what the future may hold. Long live freedom and the skills necessary to resist those that try to take it away.
Wow, talk about a tear jerker...

Jews are the greatest survivalists in the world. They can use their enviroment, be it London or the deserts or the most primaevel forests in europe.
Respect, and huge respect for Mr Mears. He said freedom and those humble peoples survival, gave his work true meaning. Nice.

Did ray just give the guy cash for making him shoes?
BeyondChange 1 year ago
@BeyondChange He gave a Swedish knife maker a silver coin in another episode as an exchange gift, so he might have done the same here.

It was cash I think since it sounded like paper but who cares the man worked for it!
