Yes he gave cash to the man who made the shoes. It is a cultural expectation because Westerners are relatively quite rich compared to the Belarusan peasants who are quite poor. And a reciprocal gift besides. This may be difficult for a Westerner to understand but try to see it from the Belarusan perspective - they are quite poor. Giving them cash is a sign of kindness and sympathy for their poverty.

It is common practice to pay for hospitality and such when visiting 'locals', it just isn't depicted much on Ray's shows. Might be food, cash or trade-goods. A film-crew rocking up for a fortnight will affect a subsistence economy massively, it's only fair they pay their way. These trips are organised well in advance, there's usually little reason to make the exchange in front of the cameras.

@aarrcchhoonntt lol dont dis him he is pretty bad ass and is without a doubt a survivalist. he shows you how to get out quickly, efficiently and shows you how to overcome extreme obstacles. (its probs because he was in the army and thats why he seems so rushed and extreme all the time lol) HOWEVER this doesnt mean i am favouring him xD i think ray mears is awesome and has a lot of knowledge too =D

Instead go watch his urban episode, where he blows up a door by putting a burning rag on a 120 liter gas canister. It's so very, veyr wrong. I built fuel-air bombs using gasoline and propane in my time and what I ca say for sure is that a burning rag would NEVER, EVER cause the rupture of a gas tank, and definitley not in the manner depicted, and if it would, it would be completely different
