Time to be pedantic! Regarding string theory, depending on what you mean by "mainstream" may not be entirely correct. Out of the many people in the physics department at my university, I can only confirm one of them (professor S. James Gates) who believes that string theory is anything more than pretty mathematics. However, if you meant "mainstream" as in most well-known by the general public, then I completely agree with you.

Yes, big pharma has become a business which only focuses its attention on drugs from which it can make a profit. But, this money goes a substantial way to funding further research. The education I was referring to was surrounding that provided by charities and aid workers; simple awareness of HIV and sexually transmitted infections and promoting the use of protection - especially in Africa.
@rossexton it may be huge but in the case of AIDS its very simple - just follow the money to big pharma and the politicians - keep watching the new videos i find daily at hivquestions - things are really changing right now
