@hypotherima1 this is not an indian song read some history moron ras shorty i wrote this..it was stolen cause Trinidadians don't support their own.....SAD
Actors prior to Mithun were just shaking their legs and calling it dance, as you can see here... Mithun brought real disco and break dance to the scene, followed by good dancers later on like Jawed Jafri....
Whoever is hating this track due to the fact that it is copied, please dont hate!
The original sounds good, but this is even better from my point of view. Kishore Kumar made this song a landmark in the world of Indian music. Just show some respect to the Legend that is the Late Kishore Kumar!!!!
Being the only white kid in Devon (Chicago) this brings back every memory of every corner shop on the street where I grew up. I now want to buy poppadoms and bootleg Bollywood dvds.
It's copied alright, but its done beautifully. Kishore da was unparallelled. In the genre of wonderful music, this version complements the original well. Very much unlike the plastic stuff of today...
lmao - all of the west indians are complaining about this being copied from Lord Shorty's original...Have you heard any chutney recently?? Where do you think they get all of the melodies from?
@manofsteelpan ummm that's not a COPY--it's more of a cultural fusion. Chutney is a fusion of rhythms that South Asians (East Indians) rightfully brought with them FROM India to the West Indies and it gets fused with soca, calypso, sometimes ragga-soca and other genres to create different kinds of chutney sounds. Not the same as taking an original concept song & indigenous genre, not acknowledging that it was and re-birthing it as traditional to another place.
Would someone please explain to me why anyone would want to see a jackass in a foil jumpsuit skipping like a little girl around a giant record, feeling himself up like an amateur stripper?
Good song. But I prefer the Lord Shanti's original cause the message was meaningful. This one however has vary good choreography, setting and atmosphere for a music video.
In Space-time dimensions of Relativistic context or even in Euclidean space dimensions of Classical contexts, Rishi Kapoor's absolute velocity with respect to the ground seems to be zero at many co-ordinates of time whereas, once in a while, his velocity relative to the disc seems to be twice that of the disc, but in opposite direction. Also, there seems to be enough friction present to prevent slipping!
even though the song is copied, Kishore da has really smashed this one with his unique voice...the original song is a mediocre one from Lord Shanty but they should have been given credit... Laxikant Pyarelal have ripped off many songs... another example - Mere Rang Mein Ranganewalli from Maine Pyar Kiya...it is a rip off from 'Europe - The Final Countdown'
@bravomod first of all maine pyar kiya did not have music by laxmikant pyarelal. secondly, not only laxmikant pyarelal, most of the indian composers have lifted tunes from west - to name a few, annu malik - maximum songs are copied, the much hyped though fabulous composer r d burman, bappi lahiri. even the yesteryear composers lifted songs from west.
@sudesh1110 Yeah you are right... I was confused it was RamLaxman for MPK... but it feels odd though, after so many years listening to some biggest hits of bollywood, one doesnt know if it was an original composition or not :-( ...
@bravomod even i was surprised to know that the some of the fantastic songs of maine pyar kiya were copied. another song from the movie.....the title song.....aate jaate is direct lift from an english song but it sounds better and more melodious than the original.
@bravomod You Obviously support plagiarism ,but what surprises me is that you have the audacity to refer to the original from Ras shorty as mediocre failing to give credit to a master piece ,It is people like you who belonged to the Maha Saba that cried fowl when the original was released but had no problem with this ripoff because it was sung by an Indian ,i feel sorry for people like you ,it is because of your low level of thinking that people like Christopher Columbus are called heroes.
@KINGKRAZY187 dude chill!! may be I was wrong to compare two different genres and make the judgement.Lord Shanty's song might really be a masterpiece, what I meant in my comment was Kishores song is nice in its own way,but dude I am sure you have not read my other comments, your sharp personal criticism is totally uncalled for! where on earth did I say I support plagiarism, infact I expressed sadness over it! if you cant read them more carefully and understand it clearly I cant help it. Grow up!
@KINGKRAZY187 Secondly... I dont know what Maha Sabha is or Why Christopher Columbus is called a hero nor I live in West Indian islands... just chill and enjoy the songs...we really shouldnt fret about something that happened decades back... I see you are a fan of Lord Shanty, if the music brings peace and happiness thats good enough for me... As Shanty himself sang get some Shanti ("Peace") in your mind
I love the demure gestures of the woman he pulls from the audience at 5:20 "Oh, no, but I couldn't possibly! Even though I am the only one for miles wearing something that matches your sparkly jumpsuit!"
After reading some of the comments i need to say more..... i love rishi kapoor (esp. Nagini, the snake/reincarnation one) and KK has been very much an influence in the way i look at music. KK, rafi have been such influences growing up. my dad loved these things. miss bollywood from the 70's and 80's. nowadays it's just SHIT!!! btw, does he mention something bout Mayaro?
i'm Trini and i love this song. and loved it more when i found out it was written by a trini. i heard it first as this version. and thought it was great. (btw, i'm a big metalhead!) never let my parenbts know! end up hearing lord shorty's version (the original) and loved it more. this is a beautiful song. spiritual and not religous. it's a culture thing. beautiful. ras shorty will live on forever. love u man.
@mausumich Umm, you can steal intellectual property but not words from a human language. That's like saying someone "stole" the word Hallelujah and made a song out of it.
@mausumich ur response shows ur a bit dimmer than the rest of the bulbs but 1 more time- The phrase "Om Shanti Om" has no nationality so of course it doesnt belong to T'dad. It doesnt belong to India either. It's a religious phrase. U can steal wrds from a song bt not frm a language (hindi)
But, u CAN Steal sum 1's intellectual property. ie melody, beat, etc. If u pay for its use then fine but as far as I kno, that wasnt done. Ras Shorty I wrote this song, it ws stolen, its as simple as that!
lols its so freaking corny its soo cute<33 the guy is pretty adorable typical indian face in the 90's wow the hindi sounds spectacular i think hindi is the BEST langage in the world!! and we indians only have it thank you god! for everything lols!
The original was a man speaking from the heart, this is just glitzy disco with advertising and ego. I imagine all the lyrics are changed to fit with that.
I guess it fits with the film or whatever, but Lord Shorty has far more emotion and feeling and lot less plastic and sex.
Finally, for heaven's sake, try and see the good in this culture! At least we don't kill our own folks by fatwas for 'denigrating the name of god' and dancing and singing, etc, unlike some of our neighbors who seem to be favorites of the West. I'm beginning to think like hangs out with like!
So let's not debate the 'who owns what first' thing.
As some other folks ahve said, go ahead and alert the artiste who you believe was violated. Its their prerogative to take action.
2. There's something to be said for creativity and the (lack of) anxiety of influence. If the created product does somthing good, what is gained by destroying it in a puritan act of moral policing?
The 'East' and many non-Western parts of the world (easiest references: Australian Aboriginal cultures, New Zealand Maori, American Indian and Pacific tribal) do not have ideas of property and infringement like that of the West. And you'll find that in many cases, the 'West' has been QUITE guilty of widespread copyright infringement and misuse of 'colored' property (see fiasco over using Aboriginal totem poles for govt. money in Melanesia).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
My two cents:
1. The concepts of copyright, plagiarism, infringement, intellectual property rights and the 'author' itself are all recent Western 'inventions.' Chaucer would have been infamiliar with them. They are also inherently Western and 'modern' (i.e. historically recent and mostly influenced by Enlightenment principles).
My mom went to that Rishi kapoor concert. She doesn't remember too much from it. Can you remember what songs he sang and how he sang ? Did he dance ? Rishi is indeed a known drunk but I liked his early movies.
This is Trinidadian Calypsonian's Ras Shorty I song from 1974. Kishore's version is plagiarized but who's counting the 1000's of copycat Hindi songs and movies where no credit nor compensation is ever given ? Indian film industry sucks.
So go ahead and sue them for compensation. No one is stopping the creators from suing, if what you are saying is true. Unless you're just making up stuff
India does not respect international copyright laws Dumbo so it's no use suing them. Om Shanti om by Ras Shorty I is not the only song plagiarized by Indian cinema, there are hundreds out there. If you only listen to dumb Indian music from people who can't decide whether to sing in Hindi or English then u don't know Jack ! Get a life and listen to some rock songs and hear for yourself.
Well if it doesn't respect international laws, then thats it. Its legal. I heard the Ras Shorty version and I like this version a lot lot better. Music is all about making things better sounding. The lyrics are original. No one is stopping the rest of the world from "stealing" original bollywood songs and making it better. Its a choice. We draw more from the western than the west draws from the east. Too bad if the Caribbean artists don't care for original Indian compositions. its their loss.
So if a country doesn't think stealing is bad, then that makes it legal and therefore OK ? How ignorant. U know nothing about the Caribbean obviously. Indian culture (music, food, the beautiful girls) is HUGE there and loved by EVERYONE especially in TRINIDAD!!! It is only your biased opinion that the Indian version of OM shanti om is better than the original. BTW Karz the movie itself was an 'unofficial' remake of 'The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.'
"Stealing" is defined by a country's legal framework. If your country dosen't consider taking a composition, modifying it, changing the lyrics to suit its local population as "Stealing", then the composers are not required by law to give credit. It is not my bias that I like this version. I grew up listenng to the Hindi version-so anything that changes that is obviously going to sound bad to me. Also Indians like bollywood-ish sounding music than something reggae-like. its a cultural preference
But there is a copyright law in India to protect Indian artists. The country just unjustly refuses to acknowledge the copyright work of FOREIGN ARTISTS. Don't you see the double standard ?
Take the hari puttar/ Harry Potter fiasco recently for which the Indian movie maker was sued. Right is right and wrong is wrong amigo. Just because a country may not have a law that says raping a woman is wrong doesn't make it Ok to go ahead and rape women. It's about moral values. U feeling me ?
for f**sake...if u hate bollywood...dont listen to it!!!!nobody cares!!!!...anyway I live in UK and the craze that Bollywood generates among whites blacks brown people is simply amazing...still peole says bollywood is crap! WTF!!!
"Nobody cares" you say ? Sounds like u do. Why take the trouble to pen a dumb reply if u don't care ? I'm flattered. U have a serious problem is u think stealing someone's song and then calling your own is OK.
Sweet heart this is not the first time that a song has been copied or simple "inspired"(Nothing is original under the sun BTW).I dont understand why so much fuss!!! If are feeling so aggrieved...why don't you go to court and sue them!!!I do doubt your english when you say that I think stealing other people work is alright for me...I have read and re-read my previous comments and cant find such interpretation....It seems you yourself are making a dumb of yourself!
So what if this isn't the 1st song copied ? Does that make it OK ? Copied & inspired are 2 different things. "Nothing is original" ? Tell that to the writers of millions of songs/movies/inventions etc. What if it was your song ? What if Britney Spears stole your song, got a big hit , made millions & u didn't even get name credit ? Your fans credit u but Brit's insane fans pelt them with verbal stones for speaking the truth. Why ? BECAUSE THE TRUTH HURTS U F****! Learn English.
Alrite..If it was my song...I would have sued them....but in this case, the original writer.singer whatever, has not raised any issue so why the f*** you are feeling so hurt!!!anyway you know the original singer so go and tell him that his song has been plagiarized two decade back ... sue the offenders!!!
The lyrics of Om shanti om as sung by kishore are not original. The whole title which the catchphrase is copied !!! Don't phunk with my heart by the Black eyes sampled 2 Indian songs and full songwritng credit and compensation were given. That's how we do things in the West.
If I had grown up in Trinidad, maybe I would have liked Ras Shorty version. who knows? Other than the words "Om Shanti Om" and the tune goes with those words, everything else is original in the Hindi version. That's how you do things in the west? How about the scores of biopiracy issues that Western multinational corps indulge in against India, China involving billions of dollars? "Stealing" as you see it works both ways.
I am a Hindu Trini. I think it was wrong for the Indians to copy this song and not give Shorty credit. He wrote this song to bring the Indians and the blacks together. God Bless him. He tried to make a difference for Trinidad. The Indians (India) took this for monetary gain only.
i love this lyrics they are perfectly written for teenagers

Are you guys seriously having an argument about a musical number from a 30-year-old movie? WHY?

What's your point?

My two cents:
1. The concepts of copyright, plagiarism, infringement, intellectual property rights and the 'author' itself are all recent Western 'inventions.' Chaucer would have been infamiliar with them. They are also inherently Western and 'modern' (i.e. historically recent and mostly influenced by Enlightenment principles).

saimi007 2 years ago
Well im Trinidadian and i know for a fact that alot of original hindi songs are redone by Trinidadian artists .. who cares in the end??
All that matters is that there is great music for us all to enjoy!
indiandreamgirl83 2 years ago 6
My mom went to that Rishi kapoor concert. She doesn't remember too much from it. Can you remember what songs he sang and how he sang ? Did he dance ? Rishi is indeed a known drunk but I liked his early movies.

this version is better than ras shorties
saltif31 2 years ago
This is Trinidadian Calypsonian's Ras Shorty I song from 1974. Kishore's version is plagiarized but who's counting the 1000's of copycat Hindi songs and movies where no credit nor compensation is ever given ? Indian film industry sucks.
scarletbabe26 2 years ago
So go ahead and sue them for compensation. No one is stopping the creators from suing, if what you are saying is true. Unless you're just making up stuff
gatesrocks 2 years ago
India does not respect international copyright laws Dumbo so it's no use suing them. Om Shanti om by Ras Shorty I is not the only song plagiarized by Indian cinema, there are hundreds out there. If you only listen to dumb Indian music from people who can't decide whether to sing in Hindi or English then u don't know Jack ! Get a life and listen to some rock songs and hear for yourself.
scarletbabe26 2 years ago
Well if it doesn't respect international laws, then thats it. Its legal. I heard the Ras Shorty version and I like this version a lot lot better. Music is all about making things better sounding. The lyrics are original. No one is stopping the rest of the world from "stealing" original bollywood songs and making it better. Its a choice. We draw more from the western than the west draws from the east. Too bad if the Caribbean artists don't care for original Indian compositions. its their loss.
gatesrocks 2 years ago
So if a country doesn't think stealing is bad, then that makes it legal and therefore OK ? How ignorant. U know nothing about the Caribbean obviously. Indian culture (music, food, the beautiful girls) is HUGE there and loved by EVERYONE especially in TRINIDAD!!! It is only your biased opinion that the Indian version of OM shanti om is better than the original. BTW Karz the movie itself was an 'unofficial' remake of 'The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.'
scarletbabe26 2 years ago
"Stealing" is defined by a country's legal framework. If your country dosen't consider taking a composition, modifying it, changing the lyrics to suit its local population as "Stealing", then the composers are not required by law to give credit. It is not my bias that I like this version. I grew up listenng to the Hindi version-so anything that changes that is obviously going to sound bad to me. Also Indians like bollywood-ish sounding music than something reggae-like. its a cultural preference
gatesrocks 2 years ago
But there is a copyright law in India to protect Indian artists. The country just unjustly refuses to acknowledge the copyright work of FOREIGN ARTISTS. Don't you see the double standard ?
Take the hari puttar/ Harry Potter fiasco recently for which the Indian movie maker was sued. Right is right and wrong is wrong amigo. Just because a country may not have a law that says raping a woman is wrong doesn't make it Ok to go ahead and rape women. It's about moral values. U feeling me ?
scarletbabe26 2 years ago
for f**sake...if u hate bollywood...dont listen to it!!!!nobody cares!!!!...anyway I live in UK and the craze that Bollywood generates among whites blacks brown people is simply amazing...still peole says bollywood is crap! WTF!!!

"Nobody cares" you say ? Sounds like u do. Why take the trouble to pen a dumb reply if u don't care ? I'm flattered. U have a serious problem is u think stealing someone's song and then calling your own is OK.
scarletbabe26 2 years ago
Sweet heart this is not the first time that a song has been copied or simple "inspired"(Nothing is original under the sun BTW).I dont understand why so much fuss!!! If are feeling so aggrieved...why don't you go to court and sue them!!!I do doubt your english when you say that I think stealing other people work is alright for me...I have read and re-read my previous comments and cant find such interpretation....It seems you yourself are making a dumb of yourself!
novasssh 2 years ago
So what if this isn't the 1st song copied ? Does that make it OK ? Copied & inspired are 2 different things. "Nothing is original" ? Tell that to the writers of millions of songs/movies/inventions etc. What if it was your song ? What if Britney Spears stole your song, got a big hit , made millions & u didn't even get name credit ? Your fans credit u but Brit's insane fans pelt them with verbal stones for speaking the truth. Why ? BECAUSE THE TRUTH HURTS U F****! Learn English.
scarletbabe26 2 years ago
Bottom line is ... the artists in India steals from the West and gives no credit.
MrKnucles 2 years ago
Alrite..If it was my song...I would have sued them....but in this case, the original writer.singer whatever, has not raised any issue so why the f*** you are feeling so hurt!!!anyway you know the original singer so go and tell him that his song has been plagiarized two decade back ... sue the offenders!!!
novasssh 2 years ago
got ur point...lets not fight. over it ..its a short life..cheers gals
broy1979 2 years ago 2
The lyrics of Om shanti om as sung by kishore are not original. The whole title which the catchphrase is copied !!! Don't phunk with my heart by the Black eyes sampled 2 Indian songs and full songwritng credit and compensation were given. That's how we do things in the West.
scarletbabe26 2 years ago
If I had grown up in Trinidad, maybe I would have liked Ras Shorty version. who knows? Other than the words "Om Shanti Om" and the tune goes with those words, everything else is original in the Hindi version. That's how you do things in the west? How about the scores of biopiracy issues that Western multinational corps indulge in against India, China involving billions of dollars? "Stealing" as you see it works both ways.
gatesrocks 2 years ago
I am a Hindu Trini. I think it was wrong for the Indians to copy this song and not give Shorty credit. He wrote this song to bring the Indians and the blacks together. God Bless him. He tried to make a difference for Trinidad. The Indians (India) took this for monetary gain only.
MarabellaGyul 2 years ago 3
Well said. Most Indian songs and movies are unfortunately copied so doing this to Trinidad was nothing to them.
