Went to beautiful Edinburgh this summer where I heard stories on aliens in Fife. (Ehhh, OK:) But learning Big Country was from Fife certainly improves my view on Fife.
I wish Stuart, with or without BC, could have found enough commercial success to support his art. I don't know why it got turned into an all or nothing thing--as if 10 million or more albums wasn't success enough. But the way his last output was mostly slagged and ignored, it just isn't right.
@cejannuzi Stuart had principles and beliefs. He knew his real fans would value his music regardless, hense the differance from the commercial world of crap churned out by one hit wonders. They will always be replaced by the next group on the block. I was a young 17 year old way back then when i first heard the sound and heart felt words of BC. i have enjoyed their music every day since. If ppl want to mock or disrespect then that is their choice. We live for free speach after all
@cejannuzi thanks for watching my vid, but hey..... you have no idea really. Stuart was for peace and harmony but that does not mean he was left winger. He has wrote songs about war and the families that have been left behind. He has also professed the need to defend ones lands in the hardship of battle. It appears you have no idea what the GREAT mans message was. But thanks for viewing.
@blertoly I probably have as good an idea as you have. There is nothing pro-war in his message, despite what some of his fans see. Start with the first album. What I put forward, though, was a theory as to why his music didn't hit with the U2 crowd--major label sabotage and/or ineptitude, his totally unconservative views, and crappy management (ask the Cult about them). Also I didn't say he was an anti-war leftist, I said he was blacklisted for it. Perhaps wrongly.
@cejannuzi Hey, thanks for responding and i do mean that. One thing i want to get over to you is BC and U2 came on the scene around the same time, 82. U2 decided to milk the market and good luck to them back then. i liked U2. n i have a few of their albums, but BC decided they didnt want to go main stream and Stuart, as the song writer wanted to express his perception on the world without being dictated to by " management " and "record " labels. Yes he is dead now but his legacy lives on
@blertoly Yes, I understand what you are saying. Look, I am 50 years old. I was much younger when BC 'broke'. I remember the SNL and Grammy appearances (although youtube video has helped jog the memory). U2 curiously enough came out and announced that they were 'Catholic conservatives' which actually helped break them to more conservative audiences in the US--which is the key to success at arena rock, conquering the US. Still, it's quite clear that Stuart and BC were grasping for mass success.
@cejannuzi Actually Stuart was born in England, a place called Manchester. He lived there till he was 2 years old then moved to Dunfirmline, Scotland. Being such a youngster he talked with a Scottish accent as he grew from a 2 year old to a man. I am not into politics or relegion, each to their own and good luck. But back in 1982 i heard a unique sound and fantastic music that had never been on the scene ever before. My brother was a U2 fan and i liked them too, but BC were just amazing
@blertoly Yes, I know that is one of the ironies of BC being seen as a Scottish band--none of the four were born in Scotland. Everyone is into politics in his or her own way, it's part of existence. What you mean is you don't want to discuss the politics, other than to say you are not into politics. I understand because what goes for politics in the media is rather contentless. I think some fans will want to untangle what happened because of feelings of sadness, anger and even guilt.
@cejannuzi Wrong, Bruce Watson is Scotish, born and bred. You really need to swat up on your information. Tony Butler is from The south of England, Mark is from London and Stu as you know was born in Manchester, so there ya go. Read up on the facts dude
@blertoly Well Mr. Smartypants, go and correct BW's wikipage: Bruce Watson (guitarist) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Bruce Watson Bruce Watson, 1991. Background information Birth name Bruce William Watson Born 11 March 1961 (age 50) Origin Timmins, Ontario, Canada Genres Rock Occupations Musician Instruments Guitar, sitar, mandolin, vocals. Years active 1981–present Labels Phonogram Records, Track-BCR Records Associated acts Big Country, Casbah Club, The Skids, Fish
But imagine the audacity of a song like 'Peace' that echoes the much mocked PM Chamberlin and has long been used as an example as 'appeasement'. From what I can get of biographical material and interviews, Stuart Adamson was politically on the left of old Labor. Yes, you can mix some 'Scottish nationalist' into that but he cared for the entire UK, the world, and not just Scotland. He spent the last years of his life in Nashville (talk about the belly of the beast).
@cejannuzi Stuart became desolved with life and the worth of life. He lost his wife and children, though his son visited him on occasion in the USA. I dont know what went wrong in his life but i do know people that did know STUART personally and it aint good. As you know if you are a fan or a hater of him then you will know where he lost his life and it wasnt on these shores. Its a shame. His music lifted me and always will. BC are still doing the rounds but i can't see them live like i used to.
@blertoly Then why does the wikipage say he was born in Canada? Yeah get some sleep, it my help you be a bit more lucid--and you might have a political dream too.
@cejannuzi ya wiipage is as crazy as you. But hey need i digress ?........ No, i didnt think so either. You continue to despise BC, i hope it makes you happy ( in ya worped mind ). Stuart is dead, show some respect.
Lucid is a fantastic word but i think you should pay attention and adhere to your own advice. Silly little man. BTW my wife is black, are you racist too ? Just courious right winger
@blertoly No, you are just wrong and can't admit it. I don't care what race your wife is, I just hope she doesn't have to suffer the way the rest of us do. You do remind me, though, of some of the goofy fanboys who used to show up at BC homepage. At any rate, after you have rested, we await your definitive re-write of Bruce Watson's bio page at Wiki, where you turn him into Scottish-born. And just to help you get a grip on reality again, let me say:
@cejannuzi You really have serious mental health issues. Are you upset that you never got to see them or have you just researched them in order to proclaim a valid piont ? I really do not know. As for disagreeing with me, then that is your right. We live in a free society and we are allowed to express our opinions. Perhaps you are right regarding Bruce, perhaps not. I have friends in Scotland ( Dunfirmline ) were he lives that know him quite well, but hey.
@blertoly I'm not upset. But you are simply ridiculous--telling everyone there are no politics involved, that Bruce was born in Scotland, etc. etc. And you claim I don't know what I'm talking about? Why don't you shut up awhile. I don't give a toss who your friends are or who they know.
@cejannuzi You are a pathetic little man and i have no more time for you. Go prey on other BC vids.... Yes i have viewed your comms on them. You will not be allowed to spread your hate here again you sad little loser....... Yep, im gona block you, sad little prick
@blertoly Just because someone doesn't agree with your half-cocked notions about BC or SA or the music or its meanings, that does not make them anti-BC. It just makes them disagree with you, and that looks more and more like a reasonable thing to do.
Imagine chanting: give us bombs in our time. give us war in our time. give us hardship and defense of our homeland in our time. Also, check out songs like 'What about Peace?'. Fairly explicit even if the irony might be a bit sophisticated for you.
@cejannuzi think what ya like dude, and know you are not too sophistcated for me. The irony is you have little knowledge of Big Country, just idiotic perception of your own views from over the pond. i would like to ask you why you disrespect Big Country so much and yet you view them often. Explain ?
@blertoly Where have I disrespected BC or SA or his memory? I tried to explain why they were let down by the music industry. You are the sort of person who cites 'people who knew SA' and then says 'not good'. I don't want to deal in your dirty world. We both have the music. Embrace it for what it means to you. If you think having a political view or wanting to change the world is something that is negative, all I can say is I feel sorry for you.
What about peace What about love What about me and you What about the truth What about changing your mind While you still have time To make up your mind I was the pilot of a nuclear bomber I knew the rules about glory and honor I never know how many people cop it Cause I don't build the things, I only drop it
@spainishgirl Thanks so much girl. Stuart had so many values that mirror my own values. He is LEGEND and missed by all his fans. Deep indeed but also humble and forboding.
Thanks my dear sis for enjoying the works of my all time fave group,
In sun-kissed rooms in city slums Minds are restless till the airmail come From the forest floor to the western mind Like a chat show topic on a party line And the hardest love of all is to forgive As the world comes tumbling down Let all the rain come down on blind desire Like a thundercloud that holds a prairie fire I hear the blame and I see the cause A stronger voice and a stronger law **But buyers buy and sellers sell Public consumption of a private hell** Brilliant!
This is greatest song of all to me! Never get sick of this band! I just cannot believe Big Country never won a grammy!? Is that correct? What, were they too "political"? They just didn't "fit in"? All their songs are works of art-brilliant! Their music is timeless! No one can top this band!
@1rendezvous hi. Thanks for your comms. Big Country were not too political as such. They just didnt go for commercialism and remained true to their beliefs and principles
@blertoly No, SA was political and didn't fit in and it's not his fault. You just read into it what you want to suit yourself. They were always a commercial band. This hurt them with the 'art rocker' types while at the same time they never fit in with the cock-rock arena rock genres.

@mrkurmis why would you think that ??

@mrkurmis In a way. More or less, SA was then blacklisted for being an anti-war leftist. It didn't help that he had such crap management.

Who holds the money, who holds the need
Who holds the strings of misery or the purse of greed
And the gunmen reap while the gangsters sow
And law is cheap when the smugglers go
(Give us peace) Give us peace in our time
(Give us peace) Give us peace in our time
While I have a life to live
Then I have no life to give
(Give us peace) Give us peace in our time
