Amazing to think this was 20 years ago. I remember my shock at Annie's dress and make up when she came out. To be honest I think I was also shocked a woman was singing Freddie's lines. Then David Bowie was invited to Mountain Studio's to sing the backings on another song, called 'Cool Cat'. Nobody liked the results of both songs. That's when 'Under Pressure' was born, during a jam session in David Bowie's studio in Montreux. Therefore it was credited as co-written by the five musicians, although the very first notes on paper were from Roger Taylor for this song.

Freddie would have loved this version of the song. Annie Lennox was fully committed in telling a little theatrical story ("masking" her androgynous emotions, showing pain, fear, rebellion, hope, unrequited love, etc.) It was her gift to Freddie. Freddie obviously liked that sort of thing -- that is why the other band members knew Freddie would want Liza Minnelli as his finale tribute. The overly dramatic Liza Minnelli was completely for Freddie, certainly not for the fans in that arena.

Lennox is probably one of the best female british of all time, and in this performance she delivers her trademark range and power, Bowie equally as good. A fitting tribute to Fred, but it has to be said Mercury could out range and out power almost any artist vocally -and his voice continues to echo through the heavens. ANd lets not forget Roge, John and Brian being on ultimate form too. Love the lot of them!
