  • @HavadaranRP wat

  • Those who are listening to this piece as a tribute to dear and beloved Prince Alireza Pahlavi who listened to this symphony one night before he took his life (on 3rd of Jan 2011), please thumbs up.

In memory of Prince Alireza Pahlavi, the younger son of the last Shah of Iran.

    He may rest in peace

    جاوید خاندان ایران ساز پهلوی

  • I don't remember. Did they play this at YTSO 2011?

  • The Vienna Philharmonic are playing only Strauss… that's what many people think but thats not true :D… They're playing so many other things as well.^^ This one is good proof for example

  • Ich liebe diese musik, weil ich denke dass wenn du hasst einen mal das horen,

du kannst allen deinen dunkler vergessen fur eine kleine zeit!!

  • Leonard Bernstein is the greatest conductor ever because he sweats at every performance!!!!!

  • @Mooweedy He was truly a great conductor. As for his sweating, the fact that he had emphysema might have contributed to it.

  • Who the fuck disliked this? Seriously?

  • @derpshop 8 people who like rap.

  • @MrRahuqraf I listen to both classical music and underground rap, so you'd better come off prejudices!

  • Don't understand that conducting. Is it helpful to any of the orchestra?

  • @awreckingball The conductor is helpful to the orchestra in a sense that he controls the interpretation, timing and cues. And he gets a pointy stick :D

  • @Chazoboist Yeah, but as far as the timing's concerned... Look at the hit at 1:25 - watch it once looking at Bernstein, but then watch it while looking at the concertmaster... I think I know who was controlling the timing there. :P

  • @nickr753 Haha, thats true :D but utlimately those are the points of a conductor :)

  • Which orchestra is this?

  • @natashasaliba24 you can find it by watching the video...

  • Thank you God for Leonard Bernstein. Greatest conductor of Mahler of all time.

  • to those that say the principal trumpet was off his game... sounded fine to me, lets see you do better

  • 7.58 to 8.02... exhilirating!!!!

  • One word: HORN :)

  • one word: trumpet

  • Thank you @Tokkemon!

  • Does anyone know where this took place?

  • @ThcPatient Musikverein

  • @Tokkemon Thanks!

  • @Tokkemon Thanks!

  • @Tokkemon

    lol

  • @ThcPatient It was in Wien,

look at this, it will be in Berlin.

  • Why does this video freeze up all the time????

  • @al1936ful BECAUSE IT CAN

  • Quando sono particolarmente esausto per delle tensioni sociali che subisco, ascolto con piacere Gustav Mahler e il mondo si riaccende e mi irradia il fascino e la poesia dell'umanità

  • OMG Mahler yoo're the BOSS!

  • eargasm at its max!!!!

  • Another triumph! Thank you so much for posting this. I could never have imagined something like youtube when I began listening to Mahler 30 years ago, but it is a wonderful venue for people to enjoy these priceless performances. Bravo Tokkemon!

  • I am surprised at how Vienna can't play their own music, even with Bernstein at the helm.

  • He was buried holding this score on his chest

  • This is one of the greatest compositions ever written. Just look at the pleasure on Bernstein's face as he conducts.

  • @otmq watch this.../watch?v=nMtdjJHBMVc&feature=related

  • seems like the first trumpet has a bad day...

    maybe he should buy a b-trumpet... :)

  • lets see you play it better...do you have any idea how much pressure is on the first trumpeter in this piece???

  • @otmq do you mean physical oder psychic pressure?

i mean the articulation is... interesting... and what he is doing with the air... nobody knows..

he is an absolut trumpet-pro so i would epect more, but we all have bad days ;)

  • I mean mental pressure, this is one of the most "balls to the wall" trumpet pieces in existance...it's do or die! I'm just saying we should give him a break!

  • such a shame that they don't get 7:58-8:05

  • rotary trumpets.. mmmm ;)

  • haha I love how he conducts with his head in the beggining

  • I didn't know Ryan Stiles played Cello.

    1:35

  • Bernstein was a champion conducting Mahler.

  • It appears to me that this recording is THE gold standard for any recording of Mahler's Symphony No.5. The tempi are adequately paced, not too slow as many of today's recordings, the instrumental balance is very well kept, the brass is well articulated and not overblown as in other recordings which I heard (where the violins could not be heard from all that brass). Thank you for sharing this here!

  • 16 people are deaf

  • mahler ken russell 1975!!! see the movie!!! great!!!!

  • Hmm, I don't like the soloist's interpretation...it's much too polite I think. Just doesn't evoke the emotions from me that Mahler wanted to express.....Bud is still top dog here!

  • BBC..........

  • @tokkemon Where did you get this footage? It is amazing ! thank you so very much for putting it on the tubes!

  • listened to this in the radio last night, omg brilliant

  • my first time hearing mahlers 5th and at 2:07, i stopped studying and actually heard the 20th century. . .

  • que chimba!!!!

  • Mahler was the greatest composer of the 20th century. His compositions are prophetic of the tragedies that were about to shatter Europe through revolution, two world wars and the holocaust. No wonder the Nazis banned his music.

  • @Zarophel Greatest composer? Prophetic visions? Slow down...that makes me cringe nearly as much as the Bach-and-Jesus crap.

  • @jezmuff: You don't need to be religious to foresee things like the rise of Nazism and the totalitarian state. It's easy enough to predict it from an analysis of culture. Although as it happens, I believe in God.

  • @jezmuff You're quite unimaginative aren't you? Just because something is "prophetic" doesn't really mean the guy actually had religious visions. Most people use that word metaphorically.

And Bach's Lutheran faith undeniably played a role in informing his music. Any scholar can see that, even atheist scholars. Bach didn't get his music from Jesus, yes, but his belief (or delusion, if you like) in God definitely inspired powerful things like the Mass in B minor.

  • @jezmuff I know, I know...its a drag for all of you super high intellects, but I am grateful we each have an option to express ourselves with our own uniqueness. Rather democratic that way. And be heard by those that have similar brains. Other wise it makes me feel I still have a cranky schoolmarm or my dad. I particularly like to use a poetic form to express my enjoyment of You Tube. Peace

  • Lenny never will be dead. He is and will be the greatest für ever..Tanks for this beautiful masterpiece.

  • What an honor and a privilege to be able to enjoy this masterpiece knowing that Leonard Bernstein died about 20 years ago. There is no greater interpreter of Gustav Mahler than Bernstein. His unbelievable passion for the Mahler Symphonies is unparalleled. I strongly recommend your listening to his Mahler and Brahms recordings through high quality head phones and you will actually hear Bernstein breathing, sighing, moaning and poetically projecting his emotions to the musicians. What a legend!

  • look at the number of horns OMG

  • @EscargoTouChaud

Vous êtes trop aimable. Useful hint: In celebration of Mahler's music >Entartete Musik< has been covering a number of concerts, festivals, new recordings and publications. Bon week-end!

  • One of my favourite scores! :-)

  • This is a very male dominated orchestra! Went to Mahler's 1st today in Oslo, and there were a lot more females, especially amongst the violinists and blowers.

  • @EscargoTouChaud Well i can certainly understand why there might be so many female blowers ;)

  • @Quibbleify Er... would that be, according to you, because women's quest in life is to blow?

  • @EscargoTouChaud No, i was just making a sexual innuendo Mr Womens Rights!

  • @Quibbleify well, that's exactly what I understood. I'm not a mister. Oh, what the heck. The music is what should be central in these comments anyways. It's all right.

  • @EscargoTouChaud Sorry, MS Women's Rights. I think you will find that there is a vast difference between what SHOULD and what DOES happen on youtube in all cases.

  • @EscargoTouChaud

Cela ne me fait ni chaud ni froid. There is no ban on women musicians. But until 1997 the Vienna Philharmonic was by tradition an all-male orchestra. But does all this matter for music connoisseurs?

  • @heinerle456 Mais-euh! Pfffff, c'était une simple remarque, pas plus!!! Mahler is great, Bernstein is great, the musicians are great and now I'll have a great week end in peace and Harmony with Phil.

  • I cant believe how good the audio/video quality is, its almost been 40 years since it was filmed! The timing is off though, (those crazy Austrian conductors!) haha

  • Three people think Mahler is the gun from Halo 3.

  • Que música vacia !! Es una "pelota" de acordes y texturas !! Sobre todo la primera parte. Se nota que mhaler tenía un gran oficio como músico, pero un espíritu con poco que decir..

  • @gusmarr1

Read Adorno's book "Mahler , a musical physionomy" ; he explains very well how deep is his music .Mahler was often misunderstood in his times ,for some passages looked prosaic and some others too different from tradition but actually he has created new concepts in musical language , which are not so easy to see for everyone.

It's a pity his music doesn't speak to you , but believe me , his music means worlds for many people.

He is the most famous composer among todays composers.

  • I read something once that talked about how Bernstein openly expressed his frustration with what he perceived as a lack of precision and intensity from the Vienna Phil in their playing of Mahler's music. Perhaps he had to convince them of the music's value in his earlier days of working with that orchestra.

  • Wonderful performance and historical too thanks @tokkemon

  • fucking epic

  • hahaha ich glaub der trompeter war ein bischen nervös... hihihi

  • May favourite key, my favourite composer, my favourite form.

  • Wow, that first trumpet is... interesting, to say the least.

  • love it! I listen to it while I study :)

  • @ThatBassist6 same here

  • The quality is amazing for 1973! Great video, great piece.

  • This piece is a treasure to me. When my grandfather, who introduced me to the magnificent world of classical music, was about to die from cancer, answering to my brother's question: Would you like some music?, his actually last words were: "the 5th from Mahler..."

He is always in my mind...

  • @Rehtor and you really believe in your own words?!nice story...

  • @GIwillo Why would I lie in such an important matter like my grandfather's death???

  • @Rehtor you grandfather was a badass then with balls weighing a thousand pounds a piece

  • @Rehtor And do you know that Leonard Bernstein was buried with the score to the 5th on his chest with his arms folded over on it? I was floored when I heard that. Your grandfather sounds like a wonderful man, and I hope his end was easy and peaceful.

  • What's shostakovich doing, playing principle in Weiner?

  • @really12345 Was he really playing the principle here?

  • My teacher loves this, and so do I!

  • being able to watch bernstein conduct while I'm sitting in my bed is the epitome of technology as a good thing.

  • My favourite song by Malher !!

  • @LULLYxoxo *Piece...

  • @LULLYxoxo Oh god... NOT A SONG!!

  • @LULLYxoxo Symphony ≠ Song

  • I just love watching Bernstein Conduct!

  • why did he conduct the beginning?? Well he was who he was so i guess its ok...

  • really very goood! thanks

  • fantastisch!

  • Omg look at the score. It's a book!

  • Wow he goes bonkers at 6:10. Take a Valium dude.

  • Bernstein was such a treasure.. I auditioned into my first orchestra on a piece of his :D

  • First trumpet didnt stand up at the begining in video..

  • 2:06, beautiful.

  • The quality is amazing. This is my favorite piece. Would love to hear Berlin do this live. OMG. Vienna is amazing too.

  • amazing!!! it reminds me how I miss Bernstein.

No one understood Mahler as good as he did.

  • In order to do this symphony, one needs a brave and competent orchesra. The brass makes it possible, but it's the use of the entire orchestra that makes it amazing. I love this Symphony :D

  • RIP Bernstein!! One very passionate musician, loved how easily he described composer's music into common language and relate it to the public!

  • totally different from Karajan + Berliner's interpretation

  • hahah oh Tokkenom...such a poor sense of humor. :-P

  • How often is the Vienna Phil filmed like this??? They must have like 10 cameras.

  • so HIGH quality! :O!

  • the picture is very crisp and clear...for YouTube.

Oh, and the music is great!

  • Wow! They are all so young! Wonderful music, superlative performance.

  • The first trumpet solo is terrible here!!!

  • @MultiAmarone The sound for this particular video is not very good. I don't think this is an accurate presentation at all of these players. (The horn section is MUCH, MUCH more powerful sounding than that for sure for example.) I've heard Adolf Holler (principal trumpet) on CD playing and he is a great player to listen to.

  • @o00joe

I agree. High frequency band is too much distorted.

  • che interpretazione ,che stile grande orchestra ,grande bernstein

  • Thank you for this treasure.

What year was it filmed in?

  • 1973.

  • Bernstein's dead...

  • @Tokkemon And I bet he looks really old

  • @Tokkemon

I suspect that was the joke.

  • @baldwalrus7 No. Bernstein is indeed dead. Has been for 20 years now.

  • @Tokkemon

I don't think you read very well...

  • @Tokkemon lol he is dead. my trumpet tutor lived in germany and worked with him. his dead. so yeah, your right.

  • @Tokkemon no, as in OneLife26 was making a joke

    and you didn't get it.

  • @Tokkemon

I think, he talked about OneLife26's comment.

  • @Tokkemon no, both baldwalrus and onelife are trying to say that bernstein looked young compared to now BECAUSE he's dead now.

  • @Tokkemon i suspect he was refering to onelife26's comment

  • @baldwalrus7 lol sorry buddy, but his dead.

  • @Tokkemon Indeed, that's why xD

  • @Tokkemon I sure hope that wasn't his point.

  • @Tokkemon *chuckle*

Becoming a corpse does not, generally, make one look any younger.

    Do you suppose he de-composed?

  • @Tokkemon Why would 67 people like the fact that Loenard Bernstein is dead?

  • @OneLife26 lol fail, he diea 20 years ago

  • @OneLife26 Yep. He never managed to get much older than he is here.

  • @OneLife26 That's because now he's dead

  • @OneLife26

    - He'll always be looking better than you. Always.

  • @OneLife26 What a sensible person!!!

  • thank you so much!!!

  • Just great !
