@MrTristy22 My relationship with Coraline is a tricky one. It's a film I think pretty highly of, but it's also a movie I am disappointed with because I think it had more potential. I might put it up against The Nightmare Before Christmas for a Halloween special or something since it has the same director, then you can hear me bitch about it and praise it all at once.
Although, ironically my biggest problems with this film have nothing to do with the 3D.
I can understand where you're coming from with the frustration of landing the dumb plane it got tedious after a while, but when they finally land and all the possible decapitation starts...GOOD GRIEF! I finally took a breath after Haddock saved him. The action and suspence were two of the best things about this film, comedy was hit or miss. BUT I've gabbed enough, your opinion and your review. You did an excellent job reviewing and I look forward to more.
@Leroy629 Thanks :) In all honesty I like Monster House and The Polar Express too. This was a good movie and it seemed to take advantage of the motion capture, but yeah I'm not entirely convinced of it's use here either.
Either way I enjoyed this film very much. In my opinion the 3D was worth it, kind of interesting to see the dust particles floating around you swatting at them and then realising, oh they're in the movie. I think the chase scene and the back and forth flashbacks set the 3D element a bit higher as well.
I wasn't expecting much from this film either, I had heard of the character and his series, but didn't pay much mind to it. Motion capture is a mystery to me, why use it? Realistic movements, okay, cool, but it's animated. For things like Planet of the Apes and Lord of the Rings I can understand, you don't want the CGI to stand out like sore thumb so you want it to blend.
That being said I did like this film, Monster House and the Polar Express (the later barely slips by me without issue).
@hackensac Well that's good...although a lot of his live action films are kind of meh too...but at least this way I wont be reviewing any of them. What amazes me is that his animated films were strongest when he first started and then they just got worse and worse.
I'm curious. What did you think of Coraline seeing how it was famous for being 3D?
