While the nuclear nations of the world may seem friendly with each other now or at worst deadlocked with the consequences of confrontation, war has found a way to occur throughout history. If the cold war was still on, the Iraq war would never have happened, since all wars had to be fought by proxy. MAD may seem barbaric, but it uses basic human nature to enforce civility.

I don't think people should be so relaxed about nuclear weapons. While the nuclear nations of the world may seem friendly with each other now or at worst deadlocked with the consequences of confrontation, war has found a way to occur throughout history. Fear over nuclear weapons can't stop wars and if or when that day comes, you shouldn't believe that the fear of consequence will stop opposing sides from utilizing all of their weapons.

The safest and most stable time (for the major players) in human history was the cold war, because no one was going to start any s&@# because the world would end. If the cold war was still on, the Iraq war would never have happened, since all wars had to be fought by proxy. MAD may seem barbaric, but it uses basic human nature to enforce civility.

I certainly can't argue with that, ending the cold war was a disaster for a lot of parts of the world. All of a sudden a lot of people who had been in the employ of one side or the other were let loose on the world with extensive military training and stockpiles of weapons and ammunition. People like Osama bin Ladin used to be no threat to us, since he was, you know, on our team. If we had not yanked support out from under him he may *still* be on our team.

And after some review, yes, you're right, OBL wasn't really on our team. But the cold war did have some other benefits, such as a massive increase in human understanding of fields such as high-energy physics and advanced technologies.

Besides we had talks with Soviet Union many times and never declared war on them. I just don't believe than you can stop ideas or economic systems with battle.
