For the US "B" relay team to smash the world record is crazy enough, for the US team to then smash it by 6 seconds is superhuman and no way possible without these suits. juandi, Thorpe was well past his prime in this event. He was good, but not his best. 1999-2002. That was Thorpe's prime years. He reached his highest peak at the age of 18-19. So Phelps and Hoogey were racing a Thorpe that was below his best. Plus, leading up to these Olympics he had changed his coach and his goals changed with it. I reckon had he stuck with the same coach he would've been alot better than he was here. Doug Frost pushed him to the limit so he can always give his absolute best.

"Cam230723" You can brag all you want regarding Pelps, but you are forgetting, the only reason Phelps is winning his 10th gold medal and many others is because Thorpe has retired. Phelps and you have the same arrogance! Phelps can win all he wants but he will see Aussie winner soon rise to challenge him and be the greatest legend as Thorpe. I love Thorpe, he's so non-selfish, polite person. In my eyes, he's the best. Phelps is winning thanks to Thorpe.

Who cares about Thorpe being a nice person? What does that have to do with anything? Thorpe had the opportunity to win more gold medals but he didn't. Phelps is on 12 or 13 now, I lost count. He's the greatest Olympian of all time in terms of gold medals won. So take your biased, crackpot theory somewhere else friend.

Phelps has had Csev, Lochte, Vandenhooband, Cavic, Ian Crooker, Park, Hacket in 200 free style, Biedermann with a super hight tech suit and you are telling me that the depth of competition was better with Thorpe. Phelps has been breaking records since 2001 till now.

wateva mate, can't base judgements on who is better unless they race against eachother regularly in events where they are of equal to eachother at the time. They are 1 all, Phelps beat him in the 200m IM and Thorpe beat him in the 200m free. Both events 1 or the other was better.

pretty simple mate. Phelps is the best all around swimmer of all time and Thorpe the best middle distance swimmer of all time. To be the best swimmer of all time you have to master all the different styles: fly,back,Free and breast and that's why Phelps is the best ever and his records speak for themselves. Thorpe was only a great free style swimmer.

You are such an idiot. Thorpe would've competed only in one race: 200 free in Beijing so STOP saying that Phelps owns thorpe for his success. Phelps is the best fly(100 and 200), IM(200 AND 400) swimmer of all time and he's awfully good in the 200 free and is a thousand times better than Thorpe in the 100 and 200 back events so shut the hell up for once and all IGNORANT, Your lack of swimming knowledge is laughable.

You're right, phelps is the best, when it comes to no competition. I'd like to see Phelps go at with a challenger, he would fail epically. Period. Just because Phelps won 8 gold medals doesn't mean sh*t to me, he had no challenge, it was easy match, even i knew that before Olympics started that he would easily win.

Listen tard. Thorpe was at his prime in his pet event in 2004. Phelps was only 19 and was competing for the first time in that event so you go figure.

juandi, Thorpe was well past his prime in this event. He was good, but not his best. 1999-2002. That was Thorpe's prime years. He reached his highest peak at the age of 18-19. So Phelps and Hoogey were racing a Thorpe that was below his best. Plus, leading up to these Olympics he had changed his coach and his goals changed with it. I reckon had he stuck with the same coach he would've been alot better than he was here. Doug Frost pushed him to the limit so he can always give his absolute best.

Your ignorance is astounding. Thorpe changed coach to focus on the 100-200 free. Obviously the emphasis on the sprint races would lower his aerobic capacity over 400. In the leadup to this raceThorpe was also put under enormous stress from the media. He adopted a new race tactic based on his own emotions. Coupled with the windy conditions on the night it would explain the relatively slow time.

regardless, ian changed coaches because the training program wasnt working for him, so it's highly unlikely he would have swum faster if he stuck with Frost. He swam a great pb in the 100m free and his time would have equated to under 1:44 in the 200m free if the pool had a roof. Just because he didnt smash a record in the 400m doent mean he wasnt in his prime.

@666heavymetaladdict his times in the 400m before changing coaches were better than the time he did here. His prime was when he set his world records in the 400m and 200m. That was between 2000-2002. His 200m record was still standing after the 200m free here. Even when he did concentrate on his sprint races, I still think Doug Frost would've been a better coach. JMO.

This race is so emotional. Still remembers the incident in the Nationals that disqualified him. He owe a big favor to Craig Stevens, but then he was the best chance for Aussie to win the gold, 400m is his baby.
Wish he came back out of retirement in 08 for this event only and go for gold again.
