In 1975 year-end I heard this song at Romford YMCA and profoundly captivated by its beautiful melody. 36 years have passed but I am still playing this song every now and then. It is in my music archive in CD, vinyl and mini-disc formats. Thank you for uploading.
I've sort of been there, as I wasn't really an alcoholic but drank to hide emotional pain. Coming back from the pub with the street lights and buildings winging, it really did feel as though "this world was full of my shame". Thankfully I'm free from the chains now but my heart still aches for all those in 'em... and this song is still a reminder.
I love this song one of my all time favorites,so atmospheric! Even better when you know the story behind it.....it goes... Andy Fairweatherlow wrote this in a prison cell after being arrested for the third time for drunk driving. Dont know how true it is but somehow the lyrics hit home harder with that in mind.
You're all right, dear co-reviewers, this is heartbreakingly beautiful ... it's taking me back to a magic time ... almost unbearably nostalgic... also "my music my time" ... I wish I could do it all again...it's great to see so many people with appreciation for this feeling ... I love you all
The times had a weird vibe.. the mid 70s were a cross roads of modern movements and old traditions coming to an end. You had people still in the jazz age in their 50s and people in their 20s and 30s from rock and roll and country music, soft rock, and disco often referencing the styles of earlier eras. Music often had a gauzy soft feel.. This is wonderful and to see the lyrics they are simple and poignant and reading them alongside his delivery is a real surprise. Heartbreaking..
Andy hit the nail on the head with this very insightful track. I was going through the same thing then and only managed to get sober in 1998. Ha ha, I'm a slow learner. Beautiful song and a reminder of how good songs were then,
Fabulous, just fabulous - do you have any more like this from this era? I started a collection of my favorite tunes, the only problem is, I cannot remember them all... :)
I dedicate this great record to my great friend Phillip C. We went through this thing together in the seventies...Saturday night, and we'd end up like this, both of us; but we always looked out for each other...Now we're doin' it again,32 years later...Great times. You go older...but no wiser...
This song is the one we have chosen to be played last at the funeral of my father in law this coming wednsday,10/09/2008 the song could have been written for him he would of found it hillarious, RIP Ray hope you find a tipple in whichever place you end up in.
hi played this at my mothers funeral, gave everyone a little smile when it started, love and miss you mum,you have a new granson sidney wish you could see him xxxxx
I love this song; we had so many talented artists in the 70's. Name a song in the last ten years that's is half as good as this. Does anyone have "8-Ton Crazy" from the same album?
Just found this, I loved Andy when I was a 16 year old in 1969...........he's fabulous, can;t believe he's still on the road.....I'll have to watch out for him Five Star *****
timeless and poigant it deffinately is-a battle against alcoholism,i've got my doubts- its just what you did at a specific moment in time and fond memories go with it-couple this with cupids inspiration(Yesterday has gone)and you get wonderful nostalgia that you wish you could get back to(Am i old or what??)
The song of my life, beer, women, beer, darts, beer, music, beer, curry, beer, friends, beer, sleep and start all over again with a bit of speed and ganja thrown in for good measure wasn't it wonderful to be young and have no resposibilities???
I totally agree with everything said. This is certainly one of the most under rated songs. I think that we can all relate to the words in this song from some stage of our lives. I just hope that some untalented modern artist doesn't decide to perform a horrendous cover version. So many classic 70's and 80's songs have been ripped to shreds recently.
I've been talking about this tune for ages and asked many people What was andy's ace tune was before he joined roger waters no one answered correctly.Nice 1

Such a great song with that warped slide guitar evocative of hazy lost weekends mis-spent by alcoholics over the years. Thanks for posting it up

A beautiful song. For alcoholics it's a sad recurring fact. Most alcoholics die, too early!

Nice one Uwe.
Now would be a good time to hang up your running shoes and lace up your drinking boots. The Bacardi bottle awaits!!!
phicro55 3 years ago
Phil, the running shoes are semi-retired. As for the drinkin' boots...yes; they're well-laced...perhaps with a bottle of Gordon's Gin.
I don't fancy bein' sick (after too much Barcadi...) through my fingers.....ever again...
