  • Not sure what mode you were shooting in with the shutter open indefinitely, but it wasn't the "Q" mode - how did you do that?

  • @SlingerDun To keep it open indefinitely use the bulb mode.

  • i make youtube videos with this camera, but i'm wondering why it doesn't upload or look HD? it's all pixelated. i've tried adjusting the settings but the resolution doesn't go higher. i'm lost :(

  • Love this video! It is JUST what I was looking for. I've bought book upon book upon book but there is so much to know. I learn more rapidly seeing it. I went along with my own camera to your great video. Thanks SO much! Lori

  • Use a fast shutter speed in shutter priority S mode (On Canon , its Tv mode) Set to 1/400th or more, If you have a bright sky behind it , you may want to use a polarizing filter.

  • What are the best setting for taking a picture of Waving flag, crowd and anything flying away but not big one .. something like balloon.

and thanks for the great tips.

  • What are some settings I should use to fully optimize the picture quality?

  • It depends what you are shooting, Moving- Still, Indoor Outdoor, Night Shots, Daylight, Let me know specifics and I can help you more.

  • @vasDcrak, there is a LV button of the d5000 compared to the other cameras which have a switch to them,

hit the LV button on the right of the screen, and it should work, and if it does not, take your camera for repairs. :)

  • Thanks for helping out other users. of the camera - John

  • how do you go to live view mode?!?! help!

  • Thank you so much for this quick tutorial. but im having a problem taking the true color of blue and violet, im not getting close to its original color. any tip?

  • First off, I would try different white balance settings a color temps. If that doesn't work, I would look into photoshop or photoshop elements and work on changing the color in the computer after you take the picture.

  • @jonvideo ok. tnx. i will try this. how do i look in to the temperature? normally i work with photoshop if it dont work.

  • The color temp should be one of the menu titems

  • hello, I can't see the preview in lcd while I take a picture even twisting it, using my d5000

  • is it possible to hook up a external microphone with this? HELP!

  • @abosaber1 i think this gap among specifically semi professional and professional is smaller these days. d7000 is all many of us want. visit... freedsl r . co m remove spaces and get a chance to win completely new Nikon D7000

  • Can you connect the camera to the computer (USB) while taking pictures but see them on the big computer monitor instead?

  • can anyone tell me the price rang for this?

  • No video tips?....good stuff thk u

  • I like the random milkshakes on the right.

  • You noticed, Thanks for the keen eye.

  • I would go for the d5000, its newer technology, better lcd screen, lighter and does video.

  • hey jon. quick question for ya. nikon d90 or d5000?

  • @sendhelpbaylon They both have very similar specs. D5000 cost about $130 less than D90 at the moment. I'd probably go with D5000 and invest the money in a good lens instead of going for the kit lens. F/2.8 or better and you could get a good prime lens for a low price.

  • @sendhelpbaylon If you can wait a bit longer, go for the D5100 which is coming out soon.

  • is there a audio output?

  • yes a headphone output that can also be used to go into a tv or amplifier

  • is the lens you have on the nikon a canon lens?

  • It is a Nikon so I used a Nikon Lens on it.

  • Comment removed

  • Glad you liked it. You must use a flashlight and a tripod and have the person hold still while you run around them with a flashlight. Its a very long exposre.

  • 1) How do u put your videos and pictures in to the computer?!

    2) Can this camera film video?

    PLEASE HELP ME!:)

  • @MuslimboyMohsen You can use the cable, or you can plug in your SD card directly to your computer if you have that ability. And yes, you can.

  • You need a usb card reader for your computer and they are about $20 if your compute does not have one already

  • Thanxx for the video! :D helped alot!

  • this video is useful for me. greeting from Colombo Sri Lanka. !!

  • Thanks you for the kind words. A pleasure to talk to someone from Sri Lanka!

  • Great video. Simple and effective for the amateur photographer.

  • I hate being fooled and mislead. Do you know the definition of Tips & Tricks? This video is clearly not. This video is just repeating what's in the manual. Done to sell a DVD. No tips and tricks here.

  • You caught me, rats, to think I could pull this one off. :) What is your definition of a tip or trick? I am always willing to learn. Of course this is done to sell a DVD, I have a wife and two boys , my medical bills and a cat and a dog to feed. If you can not afford the DVD video set I am always willing to give you one for just the cost of shipping, Just let me know.- John

  • Nice narration. However, none of these are tips and tricks, but simply the features of the camera.

  • Nice narration. However, none of these are tips and tricks, but simply the features of the camera.

  • Watch again, there are in fact tips and tricks (sports etc)

What would be an example of a tip or trick in your book?

  • Thanks! Great tips! Today I am off to shoot a family portrait of my friend's family and I am here looking for tips. Yours was my first one, I hope i find more good ones.

  • very imformative.. thanks gj

  • great tutorial, learning so much about the camera

  • thanks for the nice complement, please subscribe to this channel

  • Nikonnnnn IS the BESTTTT!!!!! Its better and more user friendly like MacPro :)..Cannon is more like a Linux operating camera O_o

  • 7:38 : What does the Top thing mean ? and is it possible to shoot sequences with this particular camera ?

  • The is the continuous shooting mode. That is when you want to rapid fire shoot a sequence like you are talking about. It has nothing to do with timer modes, that is why we did not mention it in this video. Try it out.

  • is nikon d3000 good? :)

  • Yes, but the D5000 is better. We have training videos on both though.

  • @jonvideo is the nikon d5000 better than the nikon d3100?

  • 0:01 - 0:03

"i'm one of the hoes" :P

  • Thank you Thank you! Trying those tips tonight!

  • I Love my D5000, thanks for the tips. should have mentioned to always install eyepiece cover when using timer mode to avoid light leaks.

  • Great tip, thanks, I forgot to mention that, though we have on other Nikon videos, I just forgot on this youtube video.

  • I just ordered the Nikon D5000 and I am trying to keep learning about it. Your tutorial is the most helpful I have encounter on youtube....thank you very much.

  • which one is better Canon EOS 1000D Kit EF-S 18-55 mm (10.1 Mpx) ORE Nikon D3000 + 18-55mm f3.5 - 5.6 AF-S VR (10.2 Mpx)

  • it is a gimmick, i own a couple 14MP point and shoots that feature pixel capacity beyond the image sensors capability, often resulting in cramped pixel overlap

  • Great!!! Thanks.

  • Hi mate ...I absoultely loved the way yur detailed tutorial ...

     I am kinda confused between 2 cams ... Canon 550d or Nikon D5000 ??

I love the fact canon is 18 mp!! but I am more into creative shots than a poster size classic shot..... do I really need 18 mp for a starter? price is pretty much the same ...kinda makes me put to real confusion

d5000 I love the fact its lcd is 360 deg twistable .... wats ur suggestion ??

  • You do not need 18 mp that is a marketing gimick, anything over 10 mp can do anything. I would do the D5000.

  • @amazingashiq i would also choose the Nikon.

  • @amazingashiq get the d5000

  • Q stands for Quiet mode, you are confusing ppl. Q mode is not and Bulb shooting mode. Q mode is made to taking pictures of insects, kids while sleeping without making noise. In Q mode when hold down the shutter button it doesn't keep the shutter open for as long as you want it's just lifts the mirror and lowers it when you let go. In bulb mode when you hold down the shutter button the shutter stays open for as long as you holding your finger on the shutter button. You are teaching something th

  • Well said, thanks for clearing that up.

  • Hi Jon, I just got a D5000 today and your videos are SO helpful! Thank you :)

  • Glad you like them Whitney. . That is a great camera. If you need to go more in depth, we have a 2 dvd set at our website elitevideo . Keep up the great photography.

  • i love my nikon d5000 ;)

  • hi. I just got my new d5000 an am disappointed by the zoom 18-55 mm I believe love camera but want to zoom max with auto focus possibly even macro shots. any suggestions as wat lens would be best suited to these options. gr8 work by the way. an new to the cam an the tips are real useful

  • I would get a 28-135mm lens or some range similar for what you want to do. The lenses that come with cameras are usually starter low end lenses. You also may want to look at getting the D5000 made easy 2 dvd set we offer since you are new to the camera. Glad you like the tips.

  • hi jon can you tell me what cameras are the best nikon D90 or nikon D5000 thanks?

  • I like the D5000 better for the screen , movie mode, features and price.

  • I've just up-graded from a Nikon D40X and I love the D5000. I was gonna go up to a D90 but I do a lot of low-level shooting like BMX and skating. So the drop down screen is a god-send. Lying on the floor, or on the top of a ramp, isn't always convenient.

Excellent video, some useful tips in there.

    Many thanks.

    Darren.

  • Gald you like the tips, please be sure to subscribe and tell your friends. Also you may like our training DVDs of the d5000 at elitevideo website

  • nice review and tips ,,but do d5000 have hdr inside it ? thanks

  • No, You have to get a software package like photomatix and take three pictures on a tripod of different exposure levels. No camera that I know of has HDR in it.

  • digital killed the tripod

high iso's and vibration reduction ftw

  • What kind of Lens did you use in this video?

  • Some nice advice Jon. Isn't it a pity that some people have to make petty comments about the number of tricks.. They must have a sad life .....

  • Thanks for the boost. I hope they spend as much time applying the tips as they do keeping an exact tally :)

  • What lens did you use on this video?

  • For what shot?

  • Really informative video, thanks!

Bought my d5000 today(first dslr) and this is really useful :)

  • This is very information but I am a novice to the technical features of this camera. Even though you tried to explain them to my ole brain it is still difficult to understand them. Hey I'm not giving up though I am really trying to understand fine all of these controls and what they do!!

  • I would be happy to help you on the phone (no charge) or you can get our videos at our website that may help you . Just let me know.- John

  • I think it is better, But now I have the T2i in my hands and will be doing videos on that camera so I can tell you what I think, I am using the Canon 7D at this time and like it quite well, but for the price the D5000 is a really good camera.

  • is this better than the t1i?

  • The title says 15 tips/tricks. You only did 11. Whatever.

    Good video

  • Thanks I will recount, but I think there is some unnumbered tips in there.

  • Tip 3 has four parts Getting at least 14 tips

  • @jonvideo still not 15...

  • If you're looking to buy a dslr, then please check out the Samsung NX10. SAMSUNG NX10!!!!!

  • So what camera did tyou change it for John ??

  • what is the range of the shutter speed for this camera

  • From what I remember it is 1/2000 fastest to unlimited for slowest

  • @jonvideo It's 1/4000

  • thanks for setting me straght 1/4000 it is.

  • @burnserella it's up to 1/4000

  • how can i get to the bulb mode

  • From what I remember (as I don'thave this camera anymore) Keep lowering your shutterspeed and it will eventually get to a mode that will show up as "B"

  • great video! i learned a lot more about my nikon through this

  • Im getting this DSLR camera very soon, and wondering. Whats the 18-55mm AF Lens good for? Like what types of photos is it recommended for?

    Thanks!

  • Watch my lens videos on this channel I posted recently. AN 18-55mm is just your basic lens that you can use as a multi-purpose lens, Most of these don't have a low f-stop rating, so sometimes upgrading to one with 1.8 or lower as a min f-stop can let in more light and allow you to take pictures at a faster shutter speed if they are in low light.

  • THANKS SO MUCH...YEAH I NOW KNOW WHAT THE BRACKETING IS

  • thanks im 13 and im getting one after saving up for a year and i cant wait, ive always wanted to know how to do that, big help thanks!

  • Which thing did you want to do that was helpful?

  • hi im wonderig if its normal for the little green light on the back to flash when i turn on the d5000 or when i attatch the lens??

    thanks

  • I believe that is normal and I would not worry about it. Thanks for asking

  • @jonvideo thanks! but i have another question, should i get a filter for my lens, what do filters do?

  • iWant

  • I have watched your videos on the Nikon D5000 and the Canon T1i, which Camera would you most recommend? Thanks!

  • The last part sucks..... when he started clicking at the this video camera....

  • I agree that clicking part is really bad, please everyone stop before that part comes up and spare yourself the clicks.

  • Tips I might not know about!!!

  • what is your lens ?

  • Because it was made back then. We got the camera on an very early pre-release, but couldn't tell anyone till last year. Also the early 1990's chinese folding screen and brick and lighting scheme is very retro-chic these days, coming back in style,

That being said- See our latest videos , we have changed our set. I still look 1990s though.

  • Why does this video look like it was made in the early 90's?

  • nice chick in 0:25

  • How can I configure my settings so I can make "Light Graffiti" Photos

  • Use a tripod and set the camera to 30 second exposure (more or less) and then you have 30 seconds to do your light painting.

  • I just sold my D5000 so I have to remember. I think I put it in Shutter priority mode and dialed up past 30 seconds to B mode, Let me know if that works. If not, can you check the manual?

  • were do you find the bulb butten for long exposer

  • where can i get the mini HDMI connector?

  • @anching41 just a bestbuy or any other electronics store

  • Most likely you are in the auto or program mode, change the dial on the top to another setting.

  • why wont it let me choose the AUTO BRACKETING SET? :(

  • I took some pictures during our vacation - the pictures looked fine in live view and in my PC (just looked at them-didn't downloaded them). Later, when I downloaded the pics in my computer over 20 pics were completely white. The pic was there, but could not see anything but white. What could have been the problem and could I still recover the pics? I would hate to loose them.

  • I would try downloading them a different way first, then try a different computer.

For example if you used a usb cord to download, instead plug the card in a computer. Try the other way around if you did it that way the first time. Then try another computer. Are the pics still showing up in the camera?

  • NEF (RAW) can be viewed on camera and in PC by using software such as Capture NX2 or viewNX availabe on the supplied software suite CD. Maybe those pictures are nef.. :)

  • Could the lens be messed up? Does it happen with other lenses? Also are you sure you are in focus? Does it look blurry when the picture is taken or through the viewfinder, or on the screen? Or after the fact. I am thinking it could be your lens. Let me know.

  • Okay, i have a question, I know I dont have much camera shake and I have VR on, With both of my lenses 18-55, and 55-200mm are taking blurry pictures, thats strange, cause they were clear before and they just one day changed, i tried it on aperture priority, auto, shutter, and program, and manual, and they all still look blurry, and if you turn the aperture up to high you shutter speed obviously decreases, so how do I fix this? And which is the best Mode to shoot from just normally?

  • I would guess that your ISO changed (or you changed it to a lower number) This could cause this. What is your ISO on? Go to shutter priority mode (your best mode, until you figure this out. Set it to 1/250 th and let me know how your pictures look, and we will take it from there.

  • @jonvideo Okay I was using my 55-200mm and i took some pictures and they look not entirely blurry but not clear at all, I wouldn't even post them on my Myspace, I used 1/250th and Its still blurry i changed the iso and took pictures from 200-350, and it was still blurry i dont get it, im taking them outdoors of a field, i just dont get why it would be blurry, theres nothing wrong i dont think i really need help i have to take pictures by friday.

  • How much video can you hold with an 8G card if you're shooting HD? 720 or 1080?

  • @Josheeboy A lot, i filmed for a school projekt and i got a lot of video on my small 4 GB card. U don't need to worry :D!

  • I don't know, I would guess though at least 25 minutes, perhaps more.

  • @Josheeboy I think this model can only take 5mins of HD video at a time

  • Hey soooo my camera is having problems with the flash. Like whenever I take a picture its way too bright...and its says something about highlight? I want to know what I can do to fix it...please help.

  • First, check your flash compensation perhaps it is up too high, this would cause that problem. Second check exposure compensation, that being up too high would cause that. Third, if the other two are not the problem, check the flash power setting and lower it a couple notches. Until you fix the problem back off by a few feet and zoom in, and /or put a tissue paper taped over the lens to limit the amount of flash. If the 3things don't work, post gain and can give other suggestions.

  • You are the Master !!!

    Nikon D5000 rocks!!!

  • i get like 1.5k pics minimum (fine quality) on 8GB card, i hate it when ppl just make assuptions about things they aren't sure of - i am SURE some of you saw "1K" on the screen and never actually took 1K+ shots so that the card would be full.. i have, so i can tell you - you can get at least 1.2K pics on a 8GB card..

  • Thanks, its all about quality to number of shots. 1200 shots is a lot .

  • how much is it???

  • Jon, I loved your 15 Tips video. I just bought my D5000 this week and I can't wait to use it in Yosemite this weekend. I did not have the time to read the manual or go through the free DVD that came with the camera, so your quick tips have been useful. I have always used Canon point and shoot cameras so your videos have been helpful for me understand a more complicated camera. Thank you!

  • The live view sucks. It takes too long to take the pics.
