That was a horrible analysis of why Tiririca won. Tiririca was a popular joke singer in the 90's. Most people I knew didn't take him seriously, but EVERYONE knew who he was. He came from a very poor background and had very little in the ways of an education so yes, he probably *is* actually illiterate (though the outgoing Brazilian president is close to it, as well).
He disappeared for a while, but when he announced his candidacy everyone still knew who he was.
Well, to make a long story short, the guy won because in Brazil voting is mandatory. Everybody has to vote.
He was the most popular person on the ballot by a long shot. People voted for him because they knew who he was, especially the poorer people who could identify with his roots.
It has nothing to do with wanting solutions for the country. Anyone who wants solutions would do their research and find a qualified candidate to vote for.

His party is behind his appointment. It is a strategy devised by the corrupt people of his party. He can "pull" votes, since he only needs a couple of thousand votes the rest of his votes goes to other candidates of his party. @DrQuijano I understand that there is no perfect politician, but that would not stop me from becoming informed and voting for someone based on their principles, promises, and track record if they have any past experience.
My point is that this isn't the case with this guy. It's not like he's even a knowledgeable comedian with legitimate criticisms of the current system offering reasonable answers. He's just some guy saying "vote for me because I'm famous."

First yes, the vote is compulsory here too, who can't vote in the election day must go to some voting spot fill some papers to justify why is not voting, or you can have troubles with your documents and the justice. Second, senade, I guess the election for sanadors are iqual here in Brazil as Australia, we vote for candidates and the most voted are elected, we vote for the names, directly.

His party is behind his appointment. It is a strategy devised by the corrupt people of his party. He can "pull" votes, since he only needs a couple of thousand votes the rest of his votes goes to other candidates of his party. His votes got a no good, bad representative elected also that would never be elected. Being a puppet is not being smart.

We had a guy like him run here in Denmark some years ago, and he actually got elected. Have to say: LOVED his campaign. He promised wind in your back for people on bicycles, and other random stuff like that. Great fun to watch.
Sadly he actually tried to take the work as a politician seriously when he got in. The joke died, but he managed to do some good things though.

I'm Brazilian (but don't vote in the same state as Tiririca). The problem with electing people like him is that actually here, we have a thing called "proportionality" that's almost saying that the PARTY(not HIM) can "share" his votes with other people to elect them from "behind the scenes". So, he will send back to the office a lot of BAD politicians(not saying he is a good one) with him. They are called "shill" (hope I have translated correctly).
I wouldn't vote for him because of this.
