This is a better call but another has the crowd sounds when the NZ pair make their move. Its awesome to hear the roar that goes up but this is definately the better caller. 'This is worth coming miles to see' I bet it was!
I've just listened to both this call and Bill Collins call - and this call is the one that brings tears to your eyes. Bill Collins call didn't stir any emotion. Sorry but Frank O'Brien and Bonecrusher take out the '86 Cox Plate.
This is and was the greatest race ever...my friend was the strapper for Bonecrusher back in NZ unfortunately the horse loves to win and sadly broke down not long afterwards. This race took its toll and he was retired soon after. Not sure what happened to Waverly star
Bonecrusher carried on to win more Group 1s in '87, but I think that was the last year he raced? If you want to know what happened to Waverley star, read Lance O'Sullivan's autobiography. What happened to such a brilliant horse is shameful, and I'm glad Lance did what he did.
You're not sure what happened to Bonecrusher either, by the looks. He went on to race 19 more times, winning five of those starts, two of which were Group One. He also managed to run third in the 1988 Cox Plate. Sean Ritchie was always his strapper, son of Trainer Frank, both in Australia and New Zealand. His last race was 3 years and two months after the above event. This race took no "toll", and he was not "retired soon after."
"One of the greatest races ever".... How true. You can understand how gutted the connections of Waverley Star would have been. I almost feel their pain, still.
This call by Frank O'Brien is bloody near as good as Bill Collins more famous call of the same race.Just got a bit tongue tied on the line but the race obviously got to him just like it got to Bill
both was good i was called in to dj osullivans house to watch that race over and over, when christmas time he loved the race also the loss, but he would never show the japan cup win.
If you want to see two champions battle it out then check out Grundy V Bustino in the 1975 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, shattering the course record for the Ascot Mile and half which has never been bettered to this day.
Best Cox Plate was in 1983. Collins called Kingston Town as gone. Best Aust. horse ever. Would be greatest stakes winner if you used todays prizemoney.
"The two New Zealanders turn for home...". Fkn awesome stuff. I'm not in to horse racing at all but I'll never forget catching this race live by chance in the pub at Russell, New Zealand. Both mighty animals had the god-given inability to surrender.
You have to be kidding. Bonecrusher was an awesome horse. You had to see some of his races to appreciate how good he actually was at his peak. One of the greats of Australian racing.
Horses have to earn there places in this field every year, if they are not up to it they dont get a start. and the race was billed as a match race and thats how it turned out. And Bonecrusher was one of the greats to race here, he would have won the Japan Cup if he didnt fall ill too. Many foreign horses have tried and failed in this race.

Greatest cox plate ever, never have 2 horses gone so early, Sunline and Northerly both great champions, but this was the champion race.
