  • I was at both of those games. what a treat, not going to school and eating briggs hot dogs and watching my beloved washington senators and my idol, jose valdivielso. kent feddeman

  • For all those who didn't know Both Harmon Killebrew and Jim Kaat also were Players on the Senators whom went with them to Minneosta when the original Senators became the twins.

  • Washington First in Politics First in war and Last place in the American League!!!!

  • D.C's loss was Minnesota's gain.

  • This is great stuff.

But how is it that baseball is our past time and they not only moved a team out of the nations capital, but waited decades to bring one back?

That is like taking the Montreal Canadiens out of hockey or the Dallas Cowboys out of Football.

  • Don't ever compare the Senators of old with the Canadiens and the Cowboys.

Baseball is America's past time, not DC specifically.

  • I worded it incorrectly.

What I meant is, the national past time should be in the nationals capital.

  • I remember seeing Harmon Killebrew on TV when the original Senators were still here. I was a big fan of Washington Senators II. And now we have the Nationals, whom I root for, but - -OY!!!

  • I saw this team several times with my father. It was not on opening day. One year they came in 7th and beat out Kansas City. What a great victory!

  • Good to see so much of baseball history in this film footage.

Even though I never got to see them play in person, I treasure the Senators, as the team was a rare gem.

Thanks for the post, my friend.

  • I got to see the "expansion" Senators once (or maybe twice) before they left. So I never really saw the "original" Senators play--they left for Minnesota when I was 2--and they tore down Griffith Stadium when I was 4.

This was good to watch. The film quality leaves something to be desired, but...it's nice to see what Griffith Stadium looked like.

  • Great Stuff !!!!

  • my Dad got me an autograph page for the 1960 Senators, with everyone's autograph.....Gil Hodges, Hobie Landrith, Jim Duckworth, Dick Phillips, Jim King, Chuck Hinton and the whole underachieving, loveable gang.....and it is on Senators stationery...anyone want a copy? I won't sell the original, but would be happy to scan it.

  • my memories are from the late 1960's til they left in 71. Frank Howard was my fav.. have some Senators cards to trade...Didn't have a team til Nationals came to DC. Unfortunately they're as bad as old Senators.

  • Looks like you beat me on this one. All I have is a pennant my dad bought me (and my 2 older brothers) with the "64 Senators...and yes, Don Zimmer is in it. AS A PLAYER!!!

And like you, I ain't selling MY piece of history...

  • Believe it or not, the Nats beat the Orioles that day, 9-2, behind a complete game effort by Pedro Ramos. Killebrew did hit a homer for the Nats, and so did Reno Bertoia. 26,850 fans in attendance.

  • Thanks for posting. The year that was Harmon Killebrew's coming out! Did Harmon hit one out that game. Sure looks like it...or maybe it is wishful thinking on my park. Loved that killer and the Senators!

  • Thanks for post. I was a big Senator fan back then.

  • Quite the view of a bygone world in so many ways--the old Griffith Stadium, the next-to-last opening day for the original Senators...

  • was this part of Joyce archives?
