  • StorrorBlog

  • a happy medium

  • Storror!

  • storror brought me here :D

  • oh my god where would i actually be without this song.....just legend!

  • he was wearing legwarmers. obvs gay.

    jk. it's about friends. der.

  • There's a chance that this is the best song he's ever wrote.

  • The memories of my last semester of senior year. FUCK I LOVE YOU SUFJAN

  • gays liking his voice arguing that he is gay. thats all the story about

  • I heard this for the the first time on Friday night, and simply because it was so beautiful, I couldn't stop howling. My housemates thought somebody was dying. I don't know why it made me feel sad because for me, the lyrics symbolise hope. My own personal interpretation of the song is that it is based on a gay relationship, and I think it's a really lovely approach.

  • HAPPY MEDIUM

  • Nice thing about a song like this: If it's about two gay men it's beautiful. If it's about two friends it's beautiful. If it's an allegorical tale meant to represent some greater idea it's still beautiful.

  • Im a dude..i have a best friend.. I love him.. Not because im gay.. Or hes gay. But becausewe live our lives together as true friends.. Keeping no secrets.. telling no lies.. Accepting eachother for who we are.. Love is the only emotion that can show my thanks for his friendship.. I love u friend...

  • I think this song explains the feelings he had towards his best friend. Think about your best friend, you have this love for them you cant explain, not gay, not in love, but its a strong feeling of some type of love you may not be able to explain. A love like for a sister or for a brother, but still so very different.

  • Who really cares if this is "gay" or not? Enjoy the damn music.

  • Who says that a boy is the character given voice in this song? It could very easily be argued that Sufjan Stevens is singing/writing from the perspective of any gender.

  • a happy medium intro song haha. this song is so sick!

  • A beautiful song... one of the best on the album and that's saying something.

  • This is beautiful. I think it's about a friend from when he was really young, and when you are young like that, being in love with a friend or loving your best friend intensely is completely asexual. It is beautiful and I wish life were always like that, but then we grow up and notice gender differences and things grow muddy and confused. This song reminds us of true, true love: it has no gender, has no dirtiness, has no abuse, it is just pure and simple and just exactly what the word says: love

  • I don't know if it's about being gay, or just being confused/overwhelmed over how much you adore someone- being with them- a real best friend.

  • fantastic Composition with the instruments and vocals, I dunno if the lyrics really matter, its the tamber of his voice that fits the instrumental so well that makes this song WORK and LIVE and FEEL. know what im saying? haters gona hate...

  • i was in love with this girl and dating with her and i listened to this over and over. It doesn't get any better.

  • @GuusR than this song

  • sufjan stevens+loch lomond ...life is beautyful :'3

  • beautiful.

  • I would go gay for sufjan stevens...

  • Someone actually WROTE this

  • @supaxe so is - Eating shellfish - Wearing clothes made of more than one fabric - Getting raped (this only goes for the ladies, but you can smooth things over by marrying your rapist, so…) - Trimming your beard or sideburns - Getting remarried - Planting more than one crop in a field - Having a wet dream - Eating rare meat - Touching a dead animal - Menstruating and/or earning your “red wings” - Getting a tattoo and we don't yell at you. preach elsewhere, please
  • @supaxe you're right, gay people aren't born that way and that's a fact

  • @carrotjuice555 Gay people don't CHOOSE to be gay. It's their feelings. And I don't understand two things. One, why it matters to anyone else who loves who. And two, why everyone is arguing over homosexuality, when this song has nothing to do with being gay...

  • This song reminds me of being on the bus, going to work, and wishing I could be in an attic somewhere in Illinois.

  • Oh wow, sometimes you come across a piece of music that just makes you feel so much and you think "This is what music is all about." It's the kind of music that fills you up when you're feeling empty. It's lovely and it makes me smile. I'm so happy to have found this. <3

  • Hands down Sufjan Stevens is the BEST SINGER SONGWRITER i have ever heard and probably will ever hear. my only hope is that his music will continue to inspire others like it has inspired me.

  • LL SUFJAN

  • Whether it's homoerotic or not, it's a beautiful piece of music. Isn't that the real value of it?

  • There are many ways to interpret this song, and each of them are beautiful. Stevens is a musician with some heart!

  • That is why the Age of Adz is a good album, while Illinoise is a perfect album.

  • I'm doing a collection of my 24 favorite Sufjan songs and this is one of them. I'm going to love recording this truly beautiful piece. Every time that I pick up a guitar I cannot stop playing this! A real work of art from a real modern musical genius.

  • @Caokevin13 Did you never kiss your brother when you were a little kid?

  • @MissionAttrition um... no!

  • @ydgwas 3v3 rmp ftw :>

  • A Happy Medium straight up changed my life with this song.

  • Fuck 2:30, 3:07 is where it's at! Those trumpets man, amazing.

  • Amazing... as always. Sufjan, you truly are an angel.

  • 7 people have trouble hearing and are angry that they cant hear this beauty

  • HAPPY MEDIUM.

  • Masterpieces like this just don't come every now and then... they come once... maybe twice in a lifetime. And Sufjan, just last week I too saw the predatory wasp of the palisades that is out to get us creeping on the wall... now it's time for my brothers red hat!! Encore!

  • are people really arguing about this being "gay?" shit, man, i thought that sufjan said he wrote this song about a summer camp experience that he had with his BROTHER wherein they swore they saw a giant wasp-monster while they were there? but really, whether it is written from a brother's perspective, a female's perspective, or a boy that's in love with another boy, does it really matter? jesus, this song is fucking beautiful.

  • @feelslikethis It's you. You're gay

  • @feelslikethis It does, I mean this song's so great you can't help but wonder what was going through Sufjan's head when he wrote it.

  • @feelslikethis It doesn't really matter all that much what Sufjan said about this song. In my opinion, it's more about what the listener takes away from the song. If the listener hears this song and connects with it, their interpretation is just as valid as anyone else's.

Saying that we should shut up and just listen to the song because it's "fucking beautiful" is probably not what Sufjan had in mind when it wrote it.

  • @cavern9er of course it's about what the listener takes from it; that happens when artists release their work to the public. it becomes up for interpretation and people can choose to believe what they want about it. never once did i say people should shut up. my problem was with those who were getting angry about others choosing to interpret this in a homoerotic way. whether about brothers, a boy and girl, or two boys, my point was that through any interpretation, this remains a wonderful song.

  • @feelslikethis amen, sister

  • @feelslikethis gayness is kind of beautiful in this homo-phobic day and age....lol

  • Comment removed

  • @feelslikethis

    thanks for this <3

  • @feelslikethis You're right, I love Sufjan's talent for writing from many different viewpoints and stories

  • @redninja2010 i respectfully refuse to accept that. There is no reason to believe it is wrong. To even consider it is wrong is to have the belief that you are morally superior to these people. Meaning you know whats right or wrong for them to be doing. It also supports sexism by type casting each gender. So i plead you not to support the idea that is wrong because it will only promote bigotry and grief

  • @redninja2010 it might not solve the social disconnect. But if i could convince you that even considering for a moment that homosexuality is wrong...is wrong....i would feel i have changed the world. If you feel it is wrong, i promise one thing, and i'm not accusing you of anything...but you can't change anyone with hate... only love can change a person. But if i show you and other wrong people love hopefuly i can change you

  • 2:30. ftw.

  • @redninja2010 struggled with it?? like its something that is wrong? I disagree, i think he experiemented with it, never a struggle. It is a beautiful thing.

  • When it all comes down to it, who cares if he's gay, honestly? How does that affect anything? Appreciate the music and the man, his being gay or not gay have nothing to do with you or his music. For Christ's sake!

  • 6 people are going to be stung by a wasp

  • This song makes me think of the time my GF was Raped/ cheated on me...guess I will never know...

  • @kowtpr187 please elaborate?

  • I think this is my favorite song! It is so beautiful...

Also, you guys should check out The Perennials. They are a new band and they are really great. You can find them by searching "theperennialsarewe" on youtube.

  • love the music of this song so much... too many awesome instruments

  • Such a nice song. Brings back alot.

  • Makes me think of a girl i realy loved. <3 =)

  • @redninja2010 haha okay either way. i dont care. its not a big deal to me. whether he did or not. it doesntmatter.

  • Comment removed

  • When you are young you can love anyone worth loving.

  • I heard that he is talking about something that happened to him. Is it possible that it is about him and a girl, and he is singing from the point of view of the girl? Just a thought.

  • i even saw something where sufjan said this song is about when he was a little boy and he was camping with his friends. come on guys..hes not gay. and the fact that you guys take this song as something gay..is just sadd..this is just Beautiful stuff right here.

  • @TheSeeker9000 who cares if it is gay??? that would only make it more beautiful in my opinion

  • @netforce0 well i dont care if it is really or not. and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. i was just stating that thats what i heard.

  • ...view than most.

  • @MrWaynerd YESSSS!! You're Awesome!!

  • @MrWaynerd Better *intellect, but worse spelling. ;)

  • This song is too amazing to give a shit about how gay it might be. I do believe it is about unrequited love between two guys. It doesn't matter... this song is so close to perfect it hurts.

  • Those comments below are ridiculous. Boys kiss each other like it or not and a friendship like that is a pure love which isn't necessarily sexual in nature. Historically, and in many other cultures men kiss each other all the time. Americans are obsessed with maintaining some sort of "tough" cowboy image, There is nothing more gay than having to go to such extremes to prove that you have a penis; I'm deeply sorry if you've had to repress those feelings of love but don't dump yr baggage here.

  • 2:30 til the end is fantastic. especially with the trumpet instrumental.

  • one of my favourite songs ever! thanks for posting!

  • hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..............................................................................................................

  • Another point, just because the song says "I" does NOT mean the song is a true personal story. Stories can be told from a first person perspective, and Sufjan is one of the best at crafting these stories. His lyrics are magnificent.

  • I do hope you guys realize this song is sung from a female perspective.

Just because the singer is male, doesn't mean the character in the story is male.

  • 3:08 gets me everytime

  • this song reminds me of that friend you had when you were young and did gay shit with hahah

  • 6 people are deaf.

This song makes you reminisce. It's really nice. :)

  • Plays well as niche music, but definitely takes itself too seriously.

  • 5:03-5:23 One long-ass fart.

  • When I went Outdoor School, one of the staff members sang this song during the campfire. It was very touching and sweet. I loved it but I never knew what the song was called. My friend found it, and told me about it. I have memorized most of the lyrics since then [: <3

  • @stripee2 LINDA I REMEMBER THAT :D

  • @ret11077 Yeah, he sang us a different song by Sufjan, but Jessi introduced me to this one and now I love it... I miss Serious D:

  • I'm a little bit in love =)

    <3 2.31

  • @LoneFolkie oh yes.

  • My sister is walking down the aisle to this song at her wedding today!! I'm prolly going to cry. Haha

  • This song makes me see myself in a car looking out the window and all these figments of my imagination greeting me and my memories waving hello, past selves, people I've met and forgotten. It's rare that a song can give such a strong FEELING.

  • This really sounds like Shogu Tokumaru, with less Japanese in it. Nice indeed.

  • This is one of the best songs ever by any artist. There is a timelessness to Steven's music that gives it an ageless sentiment. It evokes strong nostalgia without dictating how the listener should interpret it. It has fabulous colour and texture. A song full of tears and sunshine and bittersweet loss. Amazing. M.

  • soo good!

  • This sent shivers down my spine...absolutely beautiful.

  • I know there is a meaning other than the concrete meaning. I have not yet learned to think that abstract, and am really hoping to come back to this song one day and be able to get it right away.

  • @durdelster1313 you know, with this song, i'm not so sure you do.

  • Best song on the album.

  • It is true that some of the best musical artists come from Michigan. <3

I love Sufjan, and all of his awesome music.

  • This is one of the most heartwarming and amazing songs I have ever heard. Sufjan, you are a truly unique artist, and I salute you.

  • this song is probably one of the most peaceful soundtracks ever written it is also a sick skating song.

  • 3:48 to the end is some of the most beautiful song writing I've ever heard. I was just listening to this song and was completely blown away.

  • Sufjan is so awesome. It's such original, amazing music.

  • this is the best song ever

  • <333

  • This song is amazing <33

  • I never cry..

    Never..

But to be honest this brings tears to my eyes.

its like glimpse of what true love should be like.

  • The whole Illinois album makes me cry. It's a good cry though.

  • Sufjan is my most favourite singer ever. His songs make me smile and cry and everything in between. Every album is like a journey through land and soul.

This song is amazing, so full of images from a place I don't know but recognize all the same. It's about friendship and love and things gone awry, but never ending frienship.

  • @Kickhouses

I feel the exact same way. When I first heard this song, I was like "I know this!" But I really didn't. I just knew the concept, and my whole being felt that.

  • pure bliss :3

  • im so happy that people arent spamming this beautiful song with stuff like "GAY!!!"

I love 0:56 right when the accordion comes in and you can actually HEAR the flashback. this song is AMAZING.
