jenninicole is correct Richard took lessons for this scene, he was nerves about tap dancing, but gave it a try anyway, he did great. I saw a special about the movie when he talked about it.

@joeperryhotashell Actually, Perry Cavari is not a broadway performer, he's a musician. A drummer to be specific. What you saw in the credits was that he performed the SONG "tap dance", meaning the percussion you hear in the background that accompanies Richard Gere's dancing.
