names.. depends on the horse and color.. tips.. SLOWER IS FASTER!!!! NEVER EVER run your horse who is not set or used to the pattern.. that's asking for trouble down the road... If you look at my video of my horses's first ever run.. You'll see what alot of slow work and time gets you.. But don't forget.. If you have a younger horse you never want to keep doing it over and over again because they'll get numb to it and will blow up.. My horse is 6 in the video and it took me 1 year to get

Let your horse run and dont keep pulling on his/her head and have both hands on the reigns in between the barrels and your hand on the saddle horn going around the barrels! And thats pretty much all the advice I have except for GO FAST! ;) I hope I helped some and good luck with the barrel racing.. its amazing!

Gah. I never said he wasn't good. Ya'll are just all making to big of a deal. Yeah, he is very good for his age. Most kids wouldn't be able to do this. But don't say that he is better than most adults, and don't say that is so amazing. The fact that he is DOING it is amazing. But putting the age factor aside the barrel racing could be improved.

I do barrel racing with a 20 year old QH gelding and a 12 year old paint gelding. You can choose to wear a helmet I think the rule is if you wear a helmet ok, if you dont you have to have some sort of riding helmet on like a cowboy hat no baseball hats allowed!

Somehow I knew that wearing helmets would pop up into these comments.

First of all, when you ride in western rodeos, especially in barrel racing, you have the choice to wear a helmet or not. Apparently, the parents of this child didn't require him to wear a helmet. That is their choice and if you don't like it that's your problem.

Second, why would you critizize a 5-7 Y/O when you probably don't know very much about barrel racing yourself? It just doesn't make sense.

I live in Canada and it's the law to wear a helmet. He really shoould be wearing a helemt. My friend went to compete in LA and she didn't wear a helmet for barrel racing and she got sucpended.She is 11

Its not a canadian rule...its a US rule ;) I have seen more than 5 people have brain damage, one being a very close friend. She was in a come for monthes. I do take it to heart that anyone, ESPECIALLY kids should be wearing a helmet.

Law or no law...he should still be doing it. A fall of a fast horse - which is what a barrel racer is, fast! - can have dire consequences. Okay, so it doesn't look as nifty as a cowboy hat, I wouldn't let my 5-7 year old kid compete at such speeds without a helmet on.

Your right on the breed part. That particular breed is for jumping and mainly English equestrian sports. If she wants to do barrel racing and compete she needs to get a Quarter Horse. If she just wants to play around a barrel then any horse would work.

Quarter horses arent the only horses suitable for serious barrel racing! Arabians do just as good my friend competed on a purebred arabian for 5 years and bet champion quarter horses many many times.
