I wanna point out that the swinging gate only works against elaborate blockers. People that chase the hand with their blocks or use alot of energy to deflect. If you get a fighter that prefers to cover up like a boxer, the swinging gate will not work.
@simonmafy But in that case you can just attack low with kicks, but yeah you're right it wouldn't work agaisnt Boxing type, wether he likes to cover or dodge
@elchacal31 The swinging gate was highly effective against 60's karate. I don't know about today's fighters...it's a little outdated. But regardless if its outdated or not, I would never use swinging gate as a tool. Its too slow. Just like in the video, I would use progressive indirect attack instead...faking is so much better. You don't need a reference point, you don't supply a reference point, you don't need to complete the first move, and you still move the obstacle out of the way.
Gotta love progressive indirect attack. This it is my personal preference to not step in when throw my kicks and to remain in proper range at all times. But my JKD resembles more of a Savateurs style which contains no pendulum kicks and distance is kept at all times. All the same feints are none the less just as useful.
A genuine explanation of applications and movement--something I find lacking in a lot of martial arts demonstrations/explanations. This is certainly a breath of fresh air to me. Thank you kindly!
Really good stuff! :) Most of it I already know but every time I watch your videos I find some new pointers to think about.. I've been training TKD, Shaolin, Sanshou, BJJ/SMW, MMA, Wing Chun with instruction and JKD "tactics" by my self.. There is no JKD schools in Finland at all.. So been thinking about "training trip" to US for a while now..
Btw, it's a huge suprise in MMA ring/cage when you do some JKD/WC stuff.. Like blocking kicks with counter kicks..
also i want to point out that the feint also give momentum for the kick, feels like there is something to grip/pull after the feint is done. and also dont feint too far for the beginners. great video as always jin sifu!
Awesome video! Great explanations, I love all your videos. They're helpfull and inspire me a lot in my training and help me understand martial arts a bit better with every vid. Thanks man :)
@shootingmen if you don't have a partner, then the best alternative is a wooden dummy, which you can make yourself if you can't afford one. good luck!
Thanks so much for this video Jin. I'm getting more into UFC as time progresses and it's great to see how Wing Chun can intertwine with it all. Think I'll stick to Wing Chun for a while before I mix it all up though =)
Nice video. I've been wanting to do lap sao in sparring (and I came close in doing that) and this is a good drill on how to create distance in close range using lap sao (I've seen the swinging gate drill but this one, I think, is better because the drill is quite realistic). BTW, you're very fast with the bag :D

when you push your opponent, do you use your frame to push, upper body to push, or legs to push him/her??
7thLunaDancer 1 year ago
Hey Jin, For the street you just attack the lead knee and close the gap? Thus allowing you to focus on going forward like the style is design to do?

when shadowboxing , do i imagine that i am fighting an opponent or something?
shootingmen 1 year ago
@shootingmen yeah, try and make it "active" for the mind, that's why in front of a mirror is good.
