but I suppose your child has more skill, and there is no possibility at all that the horse could stumble, or the ground be uneven...naaaah...
i could kinda tell that she wanted to go faster cuz she let him go into a trot on the second barrel good job though i wanna see one where shes flying though not just practicing
You're not dumb if you choose to wear a helmet, nor are you any less of a "true" cowgirl/rider. It is your own choice whether to don a helmet or not, but don't resort to insulting others because they opt to err on the safe side.
Put simply, even the quietest horses can stumble on uneven ground due to no fault of their own. Besides, a lot of equine sports are now making helmets mandatory.

your horse is absoloutly beautiful though amaizing and super good with that litttle girl.
@123456789ilovehorses No, this horse belongs to Destiny! She has been riding him for 3 years now and winning more in the poles than she does in the barrels! Ace really likes running the poles and has turned into a pretty nice pole bending horse too!
American helmets offer shit protection anyway so dunno what you lot are argueing about :), Nice riding on that little girls part and the horse looks safe and to be fair in a western saddle you have alot to hold.
Im sorrie but she is one cute little girl and Yes. I agree with Live2ride6692. Im a western rider and an english. I use a helment in English but when i was little i sure as hell needed one in western. It's not about a damn fashion show. It's about safety. A helment has saved my friend alot of times and she is a great rider.
I usually wear a helmet when I'm riding a horse I don't know well or if I know it likes to pull tricks on it's rider. Or, if it's a speed horse, even if it's a bombproof speed horse, I'll wear one. if it's a horse I've ridden for awhile, or if it's a well trained lesson horse, I won't necessarily wear a helmet.
Riding with a helmet is a good idea. We start all riding students with them. A couple months ago, I saw a girl thrown headfirst into a fence at a show. You could hear the crack from the helmet from across the arena. When i was little, before we used helmets, I fell off a lesson horse that got spooked. It's not the young untrained ones that I've gotten hurt on. It's well mannered, trustworthy, "bombproof" horses that just have a moment where they get freaked out.
@BarrelRacingChick99 um wow ur not smart are you. If you are under 18 its illegal if you don't wear a helmet. yeah once you turn 18 sure go ahead and not wear one, but even my riding instructor who is a very good rider still wears one, its jst common sense.
He looks like a realy Bombeproof school master. You can't beet a well traind, trust worthy, older horse to teach your child. Better than any so called Qualified riding instructer. We call them Mothers dreem's over hear :-)
agrred, helmet, and also, @RockLikeBoulders, agreed! (: I love riding without a helmet, when Im on a horse I can trust. and I can always trust my horse Ace. hes so sweet (: but Im just factoring in what the age of the rider is, I mean if she was older then I would be perfectly fine if she didnt have a helmet or hat.
This kid needs to be on a lounge line learning how to trot properly while wearing a helmet. I'm not saying this because I want to be mean, I just don't want her to get hurt or die. The horse obviously isn't going to do something to hurt her on purpose, but horse can only think so far ahead, most don't know how big and strong they are or the fact they could easily crush a person. Please at least put a helmet on her
I know six year olds who can jump and stay on the correct diagonal without looking like they're about to fall off at any second. Its not the age, its the training
Great horse. My horse barrel horse is 18 but he wouldn't lope nice and easy like that for a young rider. Nice horse or not though, that kid needs a helmet.
it not just plastic they are tested and certified, as a jumper my helmet has saved my life multiple times and i never ride without it its "absolutely dumb" to ride without one the girl is only 6 she should be wearing a helmet
Cracking a plastic helmet is better than cracking your skull. My best friend could be dead right now if it weren't for her helmet. We were breaking a horse with our trainer and the horse bucked her off into a solid wall. Her helmet was shattered, but she was fine (a little shaken up though).
i so totaly agree with you!!!!!!!!!!1 i ride western and i will not wear a stupid peice of plastic , ya ill fall and probably get hurt but thats part of it
Ugh. Enough helmet talk! I'm gunna post about something different!
Ace is freakin' adorable, and he looks like a total and absolute love bug. Very good little rider for being eight :) They looked very nice together, he must be quite the horse to be so patient and sweet with a child!
well when the horse decides to buck the child off i highly doubt if it cares if the kid is cute or not...and who gives a crap if it doesn't look good with western tack ..hello, this isn't a fashion show if you would rather looking good than safety when it comes to riding then you must be idiots.
If that horse had ever bucked in his life or wasn't bombproof, Destiny wouldn't be riding him. She has now been riding him for 2 years and he remains bombproof, absolutely no issues. She competes on him now and she can turn him on and off like a light switch.
i wasnt talking about that horse ..he looks tottally looks bombproof and im sure he takes very good care of her its just i wear them everytime i ride and it kind of ticks me off how some of the people that have commented on here are to worried about their looks when riding..
I totally understand and respect your choice, but you do have to admit that ANY horse can make a mistake and trip, spook and buck, or plain fall down, causing injury to the rider. Especially in speed events that involve arenas with deep sand. I'd never let my young child ride even the brokest horse in the world without a helmet.
thank you!!! i ride both western and english and until i turned eighteen my boss didnt care if i was riding the most bombproof horse in the barn i wore a helmet. now i have the option but still choose to wear it because im a jumper and shit happens, when i fall i fall hard its nice to kno my skull is protected when i do
ok honestly i think everyone under 10 should be wearing a helmet. like really have you guys never heard of brain damage! would you really want to see this little girl never able to live a normal life? and so what if it looks bad id rather look bad than have brain damage!
clearly her coach, or parents whatever, trusted that horse enough to put her on it. he was a good boy, very patient with her, and i highly doubt he would've hurt her. anyway, in english riding, in ontario, where i live, you have to wear a helmet riding, period, until you're 18. its absolutely crazy to not wear one anyway. but western and english style is so different.
wow people.. pathedic.. you think this little six year old girl is going to get on to youtube to listen to your crap horse riding advice? Leave the raising of this CUTE child to her parents.
very good horse, but the little girl could use some riding lessons. Her toes were pointing down and she was flopping all over the place, not safe at all. She shouldn't be trotting yet, let alone cantering.
Why do people associate "not wearing a helmet = paralyzation" Hellooooooo! Christopher Reezes wore a helmet. A helmet does NOTHING to protect the spinal cord from injury. Paralyzation comes from a break in the spinal cord.
But, just so U know, I do agree that people should wear helmets. I know a 15 yr old who died because she never wore one while on a quad. So I do agree head injuries can be fatal... but lets not mix that up with spinal injuries. U can wear a helmet and still get paralized
@617Tora But wearing a helmet keeps you from ending up with brain damage on top of your broken neck. Wearing a helmet may not have kept Christopher Reeves from becoming paralyzyed, but he came out of it with his brains still intact.
"not wearing a helmet equals paralyzation" is completley untrue. my grandpa is a neurosurgeon and he says all helmets act as is a brain bucket. you can fall as hard as you would like, its not going to do crap for you. just hold your brain in place rather than being spewed all over the arena.
that's the truth too. They just pulled chunks of one out of a kids skull not too far from here. They don't do anything for an aggressive rider. besides accidents happen all the time helmet or not
It is a law, at least in New York. All riders under a certain age, I think 14 have to wear a helmet in any competition Western or English. Training or schooling is mandated by the parent.
Its sad when a young six year old is a better rider then me! Lol. Good job! The horse is adorable too. He almost looks like my Ace :) Except my Ace has a star on his head, lol.
man i swear if the horse is going t ohurt the little girl her parents wouldnt let her on.... I ride without a helmet all the time!!!! Im a western rider and true cowgirls dont wear helments ...Seriously who the hell wears helments in barrels racing or any rodeo even other then bull ridding.... DUH you stupid people..I tought the girl was going off to a good start and the carrer in the sport.... good job
Thanks! This is her second year to ride this horse and he has never made a wrong move with her. He is quiet and has a lot of rate and absolutely no alley issues! He turns on and off like a light switch. He can take the big girls to the pay window too!! I wouldn't take $10,000 for him, and I have people waiting in line if she ever tires of him!!
i would use a helmet in western ridning, i'm just smart enough for it :] but i rides dresage and show jumping, and we in norway allways rides with helmets and security wests.
exactly these people should watch the NFR I have never seen any1 wear a helmet there. Helmets do nothing to protect u from paralyzation. it helps with concussions. I've had sooooooooooooooo many concussions before. but... I'm a bullrider lol. so I'll get a concussion mo matter wat I wear. but I agree no helmets is a western thing and helmets just look ugly on a person too so just sayin :D
THANK YOU! I never wore a helmet, till I went to a barn when I was required to wear a helmet because I was under the age of 18. Helmets just look weird with the western tack. Now that I'm back at the barn where I don't have to wear a helmet, I run barrels and poles without them no problem. I just HATE helmets. They may be safer, but they're annoying.
@MidtownBreeder09 You are so incredibly IGNORANT! "True cowgirls don't wear helmets"? A few years down the road, we'll see whose the TRUE cowgirl when you are in a wheelchair and I am in a saddle.
@MidtownBreeder09 im shows if your younger than 18 you have to wear helmets it dosnt matter what kind of compititions you do its a law if you dont you get disqualified
@MidtownBreeder09 okay, so you're calling everyone who thinks western riders should ride in helmets are stupid, and you spelled about every seccond word wrong?? nice.
There is absolutley nothing wrong with wearing a helmet when you ride. Over 65% of horse related deaths are from head injuries. I have been a barrel racer my whole life and I ALWAYS wear a helmet when I ride whether it's trail riding or running barrels. There are women who are competing in the NFR who wear helmets. It's a choice and a smart one at that. I believe that parents should always have their children wear helmets but that's everyone's personal choice.
@MidtownBreeder09 true cowgirls don't wear helmets?? First off, it's the LAW for anyone under 18, second, anyone, no matter how brave or 'cowgirl'ish you are, you can still get thrown.
she is so cute, but she should be wearing a helmet, but she is a pretty nice rider, she is bouncing a litttle, but being as soft as she can be on Ace's mouth :D
she should be wearing a helmet because horses are unpredictable and no way how quiet they are they can get frieghtened by something and take off. my horse is 44yr and he is a quiet but fast pony and you would think he has been through it all but he still gets frieghtened but stuff
Are you an idiot Rae? That child needs a helmet. If that horse to spook or take off that kid would be DEAD. Parents need to learn that putting your kid in danger is NOT cute.
I totaly agree, the kid should be wearing a helmet..I don't get some people, they;ll make their kids wear a helmet when they ride a bike but not a horse..the horse is a lot more unpredictable then a bike is. To have insurance in BC if your under 19 you must wear one, or its voided. Most riding centers try to enforce this(eng/or western. If youv;e ever seen the movie Every Time Every Ride.. you'd never think twice again about making your kid wear one.
I know she is only six but she need to be taught properly how to ride. She is yankin on that poor horses mouth. And she should be wearin a helmet she is only fricken six years old!!!!!!!
Good on her for having a go. That horse is a saint but put a helmet on her head and take the curb bit off until she can ride. That's just cruel to a good horse. Be fair.
Ugh. Cute horse, safe as any barrel runner I've seen, but that cute little girl can't reach the stirrups, which leaves her flopping around. Get her a tiny saddle or buckaroo stirrups so she has a solid base of support for her seat and can stop hauling on the reins for balance.
And do get her a helmet if she's going to ride. I know they're not fashionable, but they've saved my life several times. Horses, for all that I love them, are dangerous as all get out for small riders.
Very well behaved horse. I agree though, put a helmut on when they are that young and just learing to ride. They are young enough that you can force them too (gets harder as they get older!)
Legally, you cant make decisions for yourself like that until you are 18. That aside, the decision/consequences part of a 6-year-olds brain is far different than that of a 16 y.o. I worked with a 6 y.o. who was very insistent she was going to grow up to be a cat. And you want her to decide how safe she may or may not be?
ARGH!!! Helmet!!!! It only takes one mistep, and then it's to late.
Nice looking horse though, he tolerated his rider very well, but remeber, all horses can spook, and have their days, so for the sake of the little one wear a helmet.
Technically it is her mothers barrel racing horse. Since we found out that he was such a good babysitter, Destiny has been the only one that has been riding him! Now we need another barrel horse for her mother because Destiny deserves to own him!!
Yeah, I'm old school too! I had never even thougth about a helmet because it's just not part of the cowboy world. Most bullriders won't even wear a helmet, it throws off their timing - they have to compensate for their head being too heavy! The club we belong to has only one rider that wears a helmet and she's only 4 years old!
Hi! Did you mean ditto? I'm a grandma and I'm not up on the computer lingo so it might stand for something that I don't know! If you meant ditto, I guess that you mean to the helmet! I will look into it as my grandchildren are very precious to me. I know english riders have always worn helmets but until recently the helmet in western riding was not a part of the dress code. For years riders weren't even allowed to wear helmets!

DUH you stupid people..I tought the girl was going off to a good start and the carrer in the sport.... good job
MidtownBreeder09 2 years ago 9
Thanks! This is her second year to ride this horse and he has never made a wrong move with her. He is quiet and has a lot of rate and absolutely no alley issues! He turns on and off like a light switch. He can take the big girls to the pay window too!! I wouldn't take $10,000 for him, and I have people waiting in line if she ever tires of him!!
ponytailaqha 2 years ago
i would use a helmet in western ridning, i'm just smart enough for it :] but i rides dresage and show jumping, and we in norway allways rides with helmets and security wests.
Nightinstables121 2 years ago
we arent dumb for not wearing a helmet. its a western thing and you wouldnt understand.
3Barrels6Poles 2 years ago 6
exactly these people should watch the NFR I have never seen any1 wear a helmet there.
Anakinsconfusion 2 years ago
THANK YOU! I never wore a helmet, till I went to a barn when I was required to wear a helmet because I was under the age of 18. Helmets just look weird with the western tack. Now that I'm back at the barn where I don't have to wear a helmet, I run barrels and poles without them no problem. I just HATE helmets. They may be safer, but they're annoying.
watsonhorsefarm009 2 years ago
they do make helmets that go under cowboy hats i use to have one it worked great and i did not lose my brains
BreezeMyHorse 2 years ago 2
@MidtownBreeder09 You are so incredibly IGNORANT! "True cowgirls don't wear helmets"? A few years down the road, we'll see whose the TRUE cowgirl when you are in a wheelchair and I am in a saddle.
Breyerhorsesandfjord 1 year ago 2
@MidtownBreeder09 im shows if your younger than 18 you have to wear helmets it dosnt matter what kind of compititions you do its a law if you dont you get disqualified
MagenEfron 1 year ago
@MagenEfron I dont use a helmet when i do competition nobody at my barn does and we dont get dequalified
Haileyandbuddy 1 year ago
@MidtownBreeder09 okay, so you're calling everyone who thinks western riders should ride in helmets are stupid, and you spelled about every seccond word wrong?? nice.
horselover3331 1 year ago
There is absolutley nothing wrong with wearing a helmet when you ride. Over 65% of horse related deaths are from head injuries. I have been a barrel racer my whole life and I ALWAYS wear a helmet when I ride whether it's trail riding or running barrels. There are women who are competing in the NFR who wear helmets. It's a choice and a smart one at that. I believe that parents should always have their children wear helmets but that's everyone's personal choice.
amybabe6188 1 year ago 2
@MidtownBreeder09 true cowgirls don't wear helmets?? First off, it's the LAW for anyone under 18, second, anyone, no matter how brave or 'cowgirl'ish you are, you can still get thrown.
lilacwinteraire 1 year ago
@MidtownBreeder09 I wear a helmet because a) I'm not dumb and b) you can't reverse brain damage.....

@MidtownBreeder09 uh.. I do. sorry, I like to keep my brains inside my head. and do barrel racing and pole bedning

give the kid a helmet she could die i would actualy be dead right now if i hadn"t been wearing the helmet my mom made me wear
RyiunDS 2 years ago
who care about a helmet she's a good enough rider to sit there and i don't think the horse is planning to freak out and buck her off anytime soon.
raehorselover 2 years ago
she should be wearing a helmet because horses are unpredictable and no way how quiet they are they can get frieghtened by something and take off. my horse is 44yr and he is a quiet but fast pony and you would think he has been through it all but he still gets frieghtened but stuff
HorsesForEver950 2 years ago
Are you an idiot Rae? That child needs a helmet. If that horse to spook or take off that kid would be DEAD. Parents need to learn that putting your kid in danger is NOT cute.
ColorProduction 2 years ago
I totaly agree, the kid should be wearing a helmet..I don't get some people, they;ll make their kids wear a helmet when they ride a bike but not a horse..the horse is a lot more unpredictable then a bike is. To have insurance in BC if your under 19 you must wear one, or its voided. Most riding centers try to enforce this(eng/or western. If youv;e ever seen the movie Every Time Every Ride.. you'd never think twice again about making your kid wear one.
cloudphoenix 2 years ago
I know she is only six but she need to be taught properly how to ride. She is yankin on that poor horses mouth. And she should be wearin a helmet she is only fricken six years old!!!!!!!
morganhorseluva 3 years ago 3
Good on her for having a go. That horse is a saint but put a helmet on her head and take the curb bit off until she can ride. That's just cruel to a good horse. Be fair.
reveleus 3 years ago 3
Why? She wasn't ripping his mouth, she would have softer hands then the adults that ride that horse.
swiftnshift 3 years ago 2
Lovely mannered horse, but I do wish you'd have put a hat on the child's head.
naturalkat 3 years ago 8
helmet please.
simplesyrup21 3 years ago
Your lucky she didn't fall and get hurt. Helmets, people. And teach her how to ride.
augustcookies 3 years ago
Horses, for all that I love them, are dangerous as all get out for small riders.
ayu200 3 years ago 2
Very well behaved horse. I agree though, put a helmut on when they are that young and just learing to ride. They are young enough that you can force them too (gets harder as they get older!)
qhgirl 3 years ago
she's cute but a helmet should be protecting that cute face.

that is true.you must be 18 or older to ride without a helmet!!
cutiemidget 3 years ago
Not so!
ponytailaqha 3 years ago
Not so what? Are you saying helmets don't work?
augustcookies 3 years ago
Not so that you have to be 18 to ride without a helmet!
ponytailaqha 3 years ago
Legally, you cant make decisions for yourself like that until you are 18. That aside, the decision/consequences part of a 6-year-olds brain is far different than that of a 16 y.o. I worked with a 6 y.o. who was very insistent she was going to grow up to be a cat. And you want her to decide how safe she may or may not be?
mfearon11 2 years ago
@ponytailaqha No you dont, i ride without a helmet in comps

ARGH!!!

They didn't wear helmets when we grew up we turned out fine. Helmets make people rely on them.
missispokes2020 3 years ago
Yeah, I'm old school too! I had never even thougth about a helmet because it's just not part of the cowboy world. Most bullriders won't even wear a helmet, it throws off their timing - they have to compensate for their head being too heavy! The club we belong to has only one rider that wears a helmet and she's only 4 years old!
ponytailaqha 3 years ago
I think the issue is that the bullrider is an adult and is capable of deciding to ride without a helmet, and a little kid's not.
Just think about how you'd feel if she fell off and took a nasty blow to the head because she didn't have a helmet.
Just because a few of us got lucky and did hare-brained stuff when we were little and didn't get hurt doesn't mean this little girl won't.
Me? I'd make my kid wear a helmet. It's such an easy thing to do to prevent a possible serious injury.

Raider4ever165 3 years ago
For years riders weren't even allowed to wear helmets!
ponytailaqha 3 years ago
yes that is what i ment
they make helmets that are shaped like cowboy hats. if u want to look into that.
Raider4ever165 3 years ago 3
I would recommend a helmet...
