After watching Gurren Lagann, my life, as a whole, has changed. The part of the series that made it stand out was the evolution of a character. Simon, a shy, young boy, who was scared of the world becomes one of the most powerful spiral warriors, a man who soars through galaxies, to save the love of his life, and a wise man. The drastic changes of a character due to situations made me think about my own life. Not only that, Simon fulfills Nia's dream of flowers around the world.
@FungSlasher Dude, I cannot fucking agree with you anymore than you have pointed out. I watched the entire series in 3 days, 1-5 wednesday, 6-22, thursday (7 1/2 hours) and the rest on friday. After I had watched this show, the next two weeks I was having severe withdrawal from the show being over, it hit me HARD. I didn't want to watch any shows, or play games, or anything. I've gotten over it now, but if a show can hit you that hard, it's got something going on.
@FungSlasher It has changed my life. I have become wiser, contemplated asking out a woman I like and am still a bit nervous, but I know with this behind me, I know I can do it. I feel so much more confident and friendly after watching this show, I feel more comfortable around my friends as well. Just an amazing awesome show. Literally the best show I've ever seen.
So, I here there doing a 2nd season! (someone responded to me saying this, that it could be somewhere in the next two years or something, one of the editors said it).
TTGL is the most successful show in presenting character growth and evolution. I mean, even you hated Rossiou for betraying Simon in the 3rd half of the series, you can't help but shed a tear when he decided to commit suicide to repent for his sins. That's how lovable the characters are.
Watched this 2 years ago, cried a bucketful of manly tears. Watched the whole series again for the past 2 days, can't help myself but cry manly tears again even though I knew what was going to happen in the end.
When Kamina died I was all like FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU but when Nia died I was crying for like a whole day even while playing Battlefield 3 nothing could stop it. Now that I'm listening to this song the crying is coming back!
When I've gotten married, settled down and gotten kids of my own, I plan on showing them this anime. It's just too amazing, to great an anime to have wither into a memory. I will do what I can to keep that from happening.
Will you?
"We will never forget....this moment, this second."
If anyone knows where to get violin and piano sheet music for this please let me know! I'm having trouble finding it and I really really want to play this.
God this scene. This freaking scene.... I didn't see it coming at all, and then when I did, I just... teared up. I couldn't believe it. It was too much. And then hearing the music, I'm just weeping here bro. Weeping.
Gurren Lagann is the epitome of a perfectly done anime. It had the laughs, the thrills, the action. the romance, and the tears. After the amazing final battle, we were suddenly presented with the wedding. This song just fits in perfectly. Anywho, Gurren Lagann is amazing, and I'll never forget it, or this song.
@mantis1mike Yeah, I was just watching the random "sad pony" videos. When I got to "Crylight Sparkle" and heard this music again...ugh, I just lost it.
I was crying before this even came up. The sheer epicness of the final fight, and how it was done made me cry manly tears. Then the wedding happened and I couldn't hold beck the floodgates.
@nooblangpoo In my eyes, when something is powerful enough to make an military man cry, it deserves a place among the great works of history. Gurren Lagann 4ever. RIP Nia.
@nooblangpoo Probably the most bad ass thing i've ever heard. Thanks for the awesome story, Gurren lagann was truly one of the best anime's/anything i've ever watched. lol
Meh, I'll QQ about Gainax killing her, until I marry my own Nia, or until the day I die. After I saw the Finale, I couldn't listen to this song without wanting to bawl for like a month. This played during the proposal, which I thought was much happier, although knowing what was to come. Every Epic show has a song like this. Clannad had Nagisa's theme. Bebop had Green Bird. TTGL has this.

If I ever get around to getting married, I want to see if I could not only get this song in there, but hire a professional orchestra to play this live; because if anyone in my life should matter, I want to let them have an idea of how much they mean to me.
First they had Gunbuster with it's ending, then Evangelion's finale, and now this...you can criticize Gainax all you like, but one thing you can never take away is they know how to end an anime in ways you'll never forget.
@StormZephyr That's what we would have done, but if Simon did so,then other people would demand resurrection of the dead and the world would not get passed down to the next generation. That would not only conflict with the concept of evolution, which is one of the main aspects of the anime, but it would also cause the humans to get drunk on Spiral Power, eventually becoming like the Anti-Spirals.
I'm not saying she should've been brought back from the dead, I'm saying she could've been prevented from dying through the use of spiral energy. That way you avoid both the issue of using spiral energy to bring back dead people and you keep a beloved character that really had no reason to die.
@MrRayquazaking I did as well, even after it had ended. And when I tried explaining to my mom about the anime, and got to the end, I almost started crying again.
Honestly, if I were Simon, I'd be like "fuck reality, I'm keeping my girlfriend" and convert her to a spiral lifeform. If you say it can't be done, then you missed the whole point of the series.
@StormZephyr What Zettaplant said. Gimmy asked why he wouldnt just bring her back with the spiral power, and Simon said that would have negative effects on human evolution, because suddenly everyone is going to want their lost loved ones to come back to life, and that would cause soooo many problems. Sometimes the dead are just better off left dead. Thats what Nia would have wanted.
This anime was unbelievably emotional. The ending was great, but so sad. I have never felt so attached to any fictional character until this show. I'd say, it beats any other anime out there, even Dragon Ball. Those other shows will always have a place in my heart, but Gurren Lagann gives me the spirit to drill to the heavens and beyond. Nothing can stand in the way of my spiral energy!
"Aww, they're finally getting married. After all the muck that Simon's gone through in his life he finally gets a happy endi-WAIT WHAT THE HELL. WHAT. WHAT'S GOING ON. N-NIA WHY. WHY NIA. THIS-THIS CAN'T BE. PLEASE TELL ME IT'S A JOKE. NONONONONONO....;A;"
^ My reaction. I think it truly shows the depth of their characters though. Even knowing they can't be together, they go through and pledge their love anyways. FFFF geeze I love this show. ;;;A;;;
This show was amazing... The whole idea behind the power of evolution was awesome and the words Simon says at the end are the best "If I bring people back they will just get in the way" you can't evolve as a person by letting some things go and humanity can't evolve without letting the ones they love go. And like another comment said the best part was in the movie Simon lives his life drilling wells for flowers Nia wanted to see the world full of flowers, Simon never lost her she was everywhere
OMG I love you all, I thought I was the only guy that went (T-T) when this song came on. I've sat through every supposedly sad movie with a cynical smile, but damn did this one get to me. Often times I think that I hate Gainax for choosing to use a diablo ex machina. But I can't help but think that I would've never loved Nia's character so much if she had lived. In the all I'm just sad to never see team Gurren in action again. Remember folks Nia wasn't the only one to disappear.
My goodness, the thing i love about this anime is that the beginning is all funny, the middle is serious and epic, the ending is just tear breaking, but overall this was by far, BY FAR THE BEST IVE SEEN, I CRIED!
#1 Simon chose his path to remain himself(Both because of his connection to Nia, and to never end up as heartless as Lorgenome since he was now the most powerful Spiral Warrior in the Universe)
#2 Simon never truly lost Nia. Because Nia fullfilled her promise of marriage, according to the Movie, Simon fulfilled her dream of spreading flowers across the world. He traveled the world drilling wells for water so plant life could prosper and spread the planet. Everywhere he looked he saw her.
Dang. Since I finished this show I CANNOT get through this song without wanting to cry D: And I finished this like 1 and a half years ago T_T. I hate when great anime's have to end T_T
Choke up every time I hear this...love it so much. Perfect ending to a perfect anime. I really got attached to the characters and felt their pain with every death. I just wish that one day I can have the balls that Simon has had. To be able to travel across galaxies and through dimensions to defend and honor those that he loves...every man should have that spirit.
@farielexy A Blaxploitation of Gurren Lagann? Kamina's a pimp. Yoko's a hooker/assassin with a heart of gold. And Simon' s from the cotton fields, where he falls in love with the daughter of the slave owner (lord genome), Nia......I can see it!?! It would be shitty yes But i can see it XD
it hurts to see people get so down about the ending. it makes me cry too, but i can't stand when people think it would have been better if nia had lived. if simon revived nia, why wouldn't anyone else demand their loved ones be brought back? nia would never forgive simon for abusing spiral power so selfishly, after they fought against the whole universe and took up the resposibility of protecting life. the resolve to not bring nia back is simon's greatest victory as the universe's protector.
I was really impressed with this anime. I watched it for the first time these days, and TTGL was one of the few who made me fell like crying, exactly at this scene. But...
Maybe Nia should lived, because Simon was the one who made the impossible for mankind... and ended without lagann, without nia, without anything! He turned out to be a beggar. :(
I felt something bad... like, if you fight for something, and in the end, after all sacrifices... it seems to be unfair... like our lives perhaps?
@MADLOKO13 nah man it was good the way it was. Simon put it best at the end "those who are dead are dead if we brought them back they'd just get in the way of those who are alive." just think about it for a while you'll begin to understand. also he chose to give up Lagann and pass it on to Gimme so someone else could dig the tunnels for humanity to follow for a change and he became a hermit of sorts not a beggar. you see its not really unfair because he chose that path for himself.
And thus ends the tale of a man who desperately fought against fate, working his way up from the underground until he could look down from the heavens. In those he has lost and those he has won, the tale of Simon the Digger will live on forever...
I actually felt like crying, although all I could do is make my eye twitch....
Anyways, this i probably the best anime ever. A t first it was epic, but then it went to a whole new level. I'm not sure I have ever seen an anime with such a sad ending...
Gurren Lagann is the best anime in the universe!!!
I cry whenever I've finished an anime that has characters and takes you on a journey throughout their life, and then I watch the beginning again. It's like, they've come such a long way, and now their journey's ended. Watching these beginning episodes is like reminiscing about the past. Their past.
ah man this really tugs on my heart strings i started crying as soon as it started. no other anime has ever effected me the same way and thats why its my favorite of all time :")
@HellKaiserCSupreme dude, if i was simon id be like....whoa whoa whoa, fuck this, im bringin nia back..i didnt save THE ENTIRE FUCKING UNIVERSE just to lose the girl
@Ckknowless Sorry, but Code Geass wasn't sad for me. Unlike most people, I understood why he died and accepted it. The only anime where I was ever close to crying was Clannad; twice I think. Key makes some really sad anime, so if you cry from Code Geass and TTGL prepare for waterworks from their anime (Clannad and Air mainly from what I know of).
@DjDarkman666 When you just say it, it may seem so but it really isn't. I can't put it in few words but Clannad demands emotional empathy, much more than TTGL, so when a certain main character dies in the 30+ episode of Clannad, it has much more of an impact compared to when Kamina dies in the eighth episode. And we're talking about the deaths of innocent lives close to the protagonist in contrast to the deaths of comrades fighting prepared to die in TTGl (with exception to Nia).
@Eorzat I've seen Clannad. And, I won't lie, I teared up.
And, I'll be honest, since I knew what Kamina meant by a real man never dies, I didn't cry when he was killed. Because, he wasn't really gone.
But, Clannad and TTGL, have just as much emotion as each other. The only difference is that Clannad has all its focus on that emotion, the story is based on it
TTGL was focused not on the emotion, but on the ability to move past that pain, and rise up to defeat the challenges ahead of you.
@DjDarkman666 You're right, they both are emotional but based on different emotions. While Clannad is based off ultimate sadness followed by ulitimate happiness, TTGL really isn't based off its sadness but instead the motivation to overcome it. It's because TTGL isn't based off of sadness that it, obviously, isn't as sad for me as much as Clannad.
@DjDarkman666 I apologize for not explaining it in this manner sooner. Having remote intelligence or not, it is hard for me to explain the emotional significance of anything to anyone let alone compare it from two different contents.
@Eorzat though, in the end, Kamina's death left more of an impact, at least for me anyway, because in Clannad (I wouldn't keep on reading this if you havn't watched Clannad, because even though I'm implying things, it would still spoil the ending) a certain person that dies +30 episodes in comes back to life at the last minute, and for me, felt a disappointing. While Kamina did make an appearance in episode 26, he's still dead, but it was his memory that lived on and helped Simon and Yoko.
@marleyanddalton My god, still on this argument...Both anime desire different things from the viewers. TTGL demanded that the viewer be aware that one can change and overcome all obstacles and so, Kamina's death was essential in the fact that it helped change Simon. Because of Kamina's death, TTGL presented the most character development of any anime that I've seen. Now, if Kamina were to come to life it'd be disappointing and go against what the anime was striving for.
@marleyanddalton However, Clannad's theme was based around the fact that one can change for the better and overcome previous sadness to reach a desired "happy" ending, no matter how sad their past was. (Spoiler for those who are currently watching Clannad) Nagisa and Ushio's deaths were meant to dramatically add to this theme. Now then, Nagisa never "came back to life", Tomoya just traveled to a different world where she and Ushio never died. Their "return" was essential for the "happy" ending.
Throughout watching this series I continually wanted Kamina to not actually be dead, when the episode with the alternate universes hit me, I cried like a baby.
It is series like this that remind me why I have always had such a huge interest in animation. When you can make people care this much for fictional characters, you're doing something right. I just finished my 3rd round of Gurren Lagann (I am a happy owner of the DVD collection since late August), and I still cry like a baby every time.
in a way i think the ending makes the anime connect better with its audience. its not happy nor is it exactly sad. its both. theres always a conflict to deal with.

NONONONONONO....;A;"
^ My reaction. I think it truly shows the depth of their characters though. Even knowing they can't be together, they go through and pledge their love anyways. FFFF geeze I love this show. ;;;A;;;

LeonLight13 11 months ago 3
#1 Simon chose his path to remain himself(Both because of his connection to Nia, and to never end up as heartless as Lorgenome since he was now the most powerful Spiral Warrior in the Universe)
#2 Simon never truly lost Nia. Because Nia fullfilled her promise of marriage, according to the Movie, Simon fulfilled her dream of spreading flowers across the world. He traveled the world drilling wells for water so plant life could prosper and spread the planet. Everywhere he looked he saw her.

In my opinion, I don't think that they built up Simon and Nia's love enough. It could've given the ending a much bigger impact.

Choke up every time I hear this...love it so much. Perfect ending to a perfect anime. I really got attached to the characters and felt their pain with every death. I just wish that one day I can have the balls that Simon has had. To be able to travel across galaxies and through dimensions to defend and honor those that he loves...every man should have that spirit.

it hurts to see people get so down about the ending. it makes me cry too, but i can't stand when people think it would have been better if nia had lived. if simon revived nia, why wouldn't anyone else demand their loved ones be brought back? nia would never forgive simon for abusing spiral power so selfishly, after they fought against the whole universe and took up the resposibility of protecting life. the resolve to not bring nia back is simon's greatest victory as the universe's protector.

Anthonyplaybass 1 year ago 4
I was really impressed with this anime. I watched it for the first time these days, and TTGL was one of the few who made me fell like crying, exactly at this scene. But...
Maybe Nia should lived, because Simon was the one who made the impossible for mankind... and ended without lagann, without nia, without anything! He turned out to be a beggar. :(
I felt something bad... like, if you fight for something, and in the end, after all sacrifices... it seems to be unfair... like our lives perhaps?
MADLOKO13 1 year ago 6
@MADLOKO13 nah man it was good the way it was. Simon put it best at the end "those who are dead are dead if we brought them back they'd just get in the way of those who are alive." just think about it for a while you'll begin to understand. also he chose to give up Lagann and pass it on to Gimme so someone else could dig the tunnels for humanity to follow for a change and he became a hermit of sorts not a beggar. you see its not really unfair because he chose that path for himself.

I cry whenever I've finished an anime that has characters and takes you on a journey throughout their life, and then I watch the beginning again. It's like, they've come such a long way, and now their journey's ended. Watching these beginning episodes is like reminiscing about the past. Their past.

@Ckknowless You mean that Lelouch fag?
crazy4sian 8 months ago
@Ckknowless nah man it was lelouch's plan to die, Nia however never had a choice in the matter.
SaitoIkari 8 months ago
@Ckknowless Sorry, but Code Geass wasn't sad for me. Unlike most people, I understood why he died and accepted it. The only anime where I was ever close to crying was Clannad; twice I think. Key makes some really sad anime, so if you cry from Code Geass and TTGL prepare for waterworks from their anime (Clannad and Air mainly from what I know of).
Eorzat 8 months ago 6
@Eorzat Accepting the death is fine, and I get why you didn't cry through Code Geass.
But.....
Not only did Simon lose the one person that treated him like he was worth something growing up.
But, after fighting through a galaxy, to save the girl he loved, losing nearly all of his closest friends doing so.
The last girl that truly, without a doubt in her heart, never stopped believing in him.
Is taken away.
That. Is just as heart-wrenching as Clannad.
DjDarkman666 8 months ago 3
@DjDarkman666 When you just say it, it may seem so but it really isn't. I can't put it in few words but Clannad demands emotional empathy, much more than TTGL, so when a certain main character dies in the 30+ episode of Clannad, it has much more of an impact compared to when Kamina dies in the eighth episode. And we're talking about the deaths of innocent lives close to the protagonist in contrast to the deaths of comrades fighting prepared to die in TTGl (with exception to Nia).
Eorzat 8 months ago
@Eorzat I've seen Clannad. And, I won't lie, I teared up.
DjDarkman666 8 months ago
@DjDarkman666 You're right, they both are emotional but based on different emotions. While Clannad is based off ultimate sadness followed by ulitimate happiness, TTGL really isn't based off its sadness but instead the motivation to overcome it. It's because TTGL isn't based off of sadness that it, obviously, isn't as sad for me as much as Clannad.
Eorzat 8 months ago
@Eorzat Fair enough.....at least you have remote intelligence to explain it.
DjDarkman666 8 months ago
@DjDarkman666 I apologize for not explaining it in this manner sooner. Having remote intelligence or not, it is hard for me to explain the emotional significance of anything to anyone let alone compare it from two different contents.
Eorzat 8 months ago
@Eorzat though, in the end, Kamina's death left more of an impact, at least for me anyway, because in Clannad (I wouldn't keep on reading this if you havn't watched Clannad, because even though I'm implying things, it would still spoil the ending) a certain person that dies +30 episodes in comes back to life at the last minute, and for me, felt a disappointing. While Kamina did make an appearance in episode 26, he's still dead, but it was his memory that lived on and helped Simon and Yoko.
marleyanddalton 7 months ago
@marleyanddalton My god, still on this argument...Both anime desire different things from the viewers. TTGL demanded that the viewer be aware that one can change and overcome all obstacles and so, Kamina's death was essential in the fact that it helped change Simon. Because of Kamina's death, TTGL presented the most character development of any anime that I've seen. Now, if Kamina were to come to life it'd be disappointing and go against what the anime was striving for.
Eorzat 7 months ago
@marleyanddalton However, Clannad's theme was based around the fact that one can change for the better and overcome previous sadness to reach a desired "happy" ending, no matter how sad their past was. (Spoiler for those who are currently watching Clannad) Nagisa and Ushio's deaths were meant to dramatically add to this theme. Now then, Nagisa never "came back to life", Tomoya just traveled to a different world where she and Ushio never died. Their "return" was essential for the "happy" ending.

It is series like this that remind me why I have always had such a huge interest in animation. When you can make people care this much for fictional characters, you're doing something right. I just finished my 3rd round of Gurren Lagann (I am a happy owner of the DVD collection since late August), and I still cry like a baby every time.
