Bad news...Audi has 2 diesel HYBRID R18s set to enter Le Mans...unfortunately I don't think these cars will stand a chance against the diesel hybrids...I was hoping someone could beat Audi, even if it was another manufacturer that I usually don't like.

I dont think that will be that much defference between Audi and the Toyota.

Toyota has said in many years that they have ''unfinished buisness'' at Le Mans.

So if the car cant keep pace with the R18 then Toyota will probaly cast an insane amount of money into thier LMP project

@484berkshire My thoughts exactly! I really hoped to see some Audi/Toyota competition this year given Peugeot's exit. But I don't think the TS030 Hybrid stands a chance against the R18 TDI Hybrid. But then again if the TS030 Hybrid proves more reliable than the diesel hybrid, then it will be an exciting race against the R18's I'm sure...

@Elkyblack it also regenerates energy on the track. This is a stepping stone for things to come...one day, we will see fully-electric/solar cars on the track doing blistering speeds. Good to you Toyota/Honda for doing what Chevy should have done: taking this technology to the track where it will be refined, cheapened, lightened and watered down to the consumer.

@ormand3000 Or more like road car R&D'd technology will be watered down to racing and then marketed as if was happening the opposite way. If you look at this car, there isn't much that can be applied directly to road cars. The supercapacitors are designed for racing: fast charging, unlike in road use.

I'm a fan of LMPs but I don't like this blatant marketing.

Well, it's not so much "EV mode" during the race as a replenishing boost of horsepower. EV mode will be used most in the pit-lane. The electric boost adds (in F1 anyway) 80 hp. So it can be good for use in defense or overtaking. Also, one can use the boost to add more acceleration out of corners. We'll see how much it truly improves endurance and performance, but, you have to admit, it sounds awesome coming out of the pits!

In LMP the limitation is that you can't use more than 500 kJ of energy _between two braking points_ (F1: 400 kJ during one lap). Another limitation is that if it acts on the front wheels, it can not be used under 120 km/h (to forbid 4WD basically).

@nismops @nismops the electric motor i think is used both for low speed power and low rev power also doing away with the need for the traditional starter motor (pure speculation on my part) hence it crawls out of the pits on the electric motor (saving petrol) once it crosses the white line the driver puts the boot down allowing the motor to start the engine hence the big thwump as it starts

i think its entirely epic (although all ive written is pure speculation)
