@johanneslolz It's never blatantly explained in the movie. Over the course of the story's plot, it's suggested that the characters are within a Hypercube (otherwise known as a tessaract), a 4-dimensional object being expressed by 3-dimensional space. A Hypercube in the real world is a mathematical approximation of an object that can't exist in our 3 dimensions. In other words, my theory is that the liquid is an artistic plot device to allow these fictional events to happen.
