The first shark that is being dragged to be butchered is dead, and in a way very lucky to be that way. More often than I would like to think about while out at sea, the shark is alive when the fins are removed, then tossed back into the water to either bleed to death or drown both extremely painful and cruel ways to die. The actual science is such: there are tons of tiny plankton, there are a lot of small fish, there are an average number of medium fish, a smaller number of large fish (and other large oceanic creatures), and then there are few sharks. Of course, this is for scale reasons, but you get my point. The less sharks there are, the more the ecosystem will get out of control and eventually all the animals will die.

Cruelty in getting fins is not to be confused with shark fin soup, which is an important dish of Chinese food. If everyone agrees food is an integral part of one's culture, this is part of Chinese culture. You don't stop eating beef just because some butchers kill their cows in an inhuman way, why we don't prescribing ways to kills sharks in an humane way but labeling shark fin soup as an non-environmental dish. Not every white-washed idea is a good idea.

@DannySierra95 If you do your research, the last Chinese monarchy ended in 1912 and this dish has popularized at least decades before. That is to say the general public has been eating this for about 100 years as it becomes affordable. I am glad u say cruelty is not your pt. but the popularity of this is pushing sharks to their extinction. If this is the case, controlled fishing such as those for salmon and tuna should be the model to follow, not cutting out shark fin soup in Chinese menu.
@sinowell the trouble is that unlike most other fish there is no way of fishing sharks sustainably. Sharks have a very low reproduction rate most sharks have less than 6 pups. Apart from that it takes most species decades to reach maturity. That means that at the rate they are being fished today the chinese can enjoy their 100 year tradition for less than 50 years to come.
@krasteller Again this is the issue of over-fishing and nothing to do with Shark Fin Soup. International efforts should be directed at "controlled fishing" of shark if they are close to extinction but not pinpointing a particular dish in Chinese Menu. We don't focus on CO2 emission from pigs just because I am a Muslin and doesn't eat pigs or cattle as a whole just because I am a vegetarian.
@sinowell I agree that emissions by other animals is a big problem too but that is another debate. The reason why we are targeting shark fin soup is because this dish alone accounts for about 80 percent of shark fisheries.
I'm not trying to point the finger at the "evil Chinese" but fact is that most sharkfin soup is consumed in China and chinese restaurants around the world and we ARE trying to ban shark fisheries too but to stop demand is the easiest way when so many countries are involved.

They can ban shark fishing in their waters completely if they want. We can still catch sharks in our own waters.

We use almost every part of the animal in all sorts of dishes. The slaughter of sharks, which makes the slaughtering of land animals look humane, only use about 5% of the animal. The rest of the carcass is completely worthless when compared to the price fins demand. Please, tell me how that is environmental.

Since we cannot change our older generation culture of shark fin. I think encouraging and educating our and future generation to stop consuming shark fin because of the cruelty towards sharks and other endangered species would be a start. Lets face it, if no one consumes it, there would be no need to fin the sharks :)

Cruelty in getting fins is not to be confused with shark fin soup, which is an important dish of Chinese food. If everyone agrees food is an integral part of one's culture, this is part of Chinese culture. You don't stop eating beef just because some butchers kill their cows in an inhuman way, why we don't prescribing ways to kills sharks in an humane way but labeling shark fin soup as an non-environmental dish. Not every white-washed idea is a good idea.

@sinowell Yes, I'm very well informed that's a Chinese traditional dish (I live in Hong Kong) But just for your information, that tradition was only practiced by the Emperors of the time, which was a number not greater than 100. And now what? More than 14 million people are used to the 'tradition'.
And yes we kill sharks and cows in an inhuman way, but that's not my point. My point is that while sharks populations decrease, the demand of shark fin soup is much more higher.

@DannySierra95 If you do your research, the last Chinese monarchy ended in 1912 and this dish has popularized at least decades before. That is to say the general public has been eating this for about 100 years as it becomes affordable. I am glad u say cruelty is not your pt. but the popularity of this is pushing sharks to their extinction. If this is the case, controlled fishing such as those for salmon and tuna should be the model to follow, not cutting out shark fin soup in Chinese menu.

@sinowell the trouble is that unlike most other fish there is no way of fishing sharks sustainably. Sharks have a very low reproduction rate most sharks have less than 6 pups. Apart from that it takes most species decades to reach maturity. That means that at the rate they are being fished today the chinese can enjoy their 100 year tradition for less than 50 years to come.

@krasteller Again this is the issue of over-fishing and nothing to do with Shark Fin Soup. International efforts should be directed at "controlled fishing" of shark if they are close to extinction but not pinpointing a particular dish in Chinese Menu. We don't focus on CO2 emission from pigs just because I am a Muslin and doesn't eat pigs or cattle as a whole just because I am a vegetarian.

@sinowell I agree that emissions by other animals is a big problem too but that is another debate. The reason why we are targeting shark fin soup is because this dish alone accounts for about 80 percent of shark fisheries.
I'm not trying to point the finger at the "evil Chinese" but fact is that most sharkfin soup is consumed in China and chinese restaurants around the world and we ARE trying to ban shark fisheries too but to stop demand is the easiest way when so many countries are involved.

@krasteller Shark is an eat-it-all creature, it doesn't pick and choose. It eats anything -- old, sick, weak, healthy and otherwise as far as they can catch them, they even eat garbage. It is their speed and teeth that conquers all - sick, weak and the slow. Man is at the very apex of all food chains. Controlled shark fishing is enforced in Canada, US and Australia already. They can ban shark fishing in their waters completely if they want. We can still catch sharks in our own waters.

@sinowell Very true but unfortunately China already can't cover it's demand for shark fins out of it's own waters and it is pressuring poor countries into not banning their shark trade. There is also no other animal on the planet that is hunted and wasted in the same way. This is due to the high price china is willing to pay for shark fins. It is more economical for fishers to dump the body overboard and just keep the fins.

@sinowell There is purpose to the slaughtering of cows, sheep, pigs and poultry. These animals have been domesticated for years and are raised specifically for their meat and byproducts. We use almost every part of the animal in all sorts of dishes. The slaughter of sharks, which makes the slaughtering of land animals look humane, only use about 5% of the animal. The rest of the carcass is completely worthless when compared to the price fins demand. Please, tell me how that is environmental.

To allow slaughtering of domesticated animals but not wild ones is practising bi-lateralism in humaneness.
