I play the piano, and let me tell you, even just to MOVE your hands like Fanz Liszt is a challenge and a great accomplishment by Dirk Bogarde. I wouldn't even attempt Hungarian Rhapsody #2, and I am not surprised to know that Dirk practiced for months just to LOOK LIKE he was playing it (Thank you, Dorsy2.) I don't know how Liebestraum morphed into HR #2 in this scene, though. Bogarde was a consummate actor and never turned in a bad performance. People should see every movie he ever made.
He "really" played the piano, but the music you hear is by Jorge Bolet. Bogarde studied for months to get the piano fingering right. He hated this movie and said it was terrible dialogue. He was crazy about Capucine, however, and said he asked her to marry him, but "she kissed me and said, gently, 'No.'" She was smart because he was gay, and even though he loved her dearly I don't think it would ever have worked. I adored him.
in his biog he states that he could not play a note, so learnt each note over a period of 12 weeks, and he did indeed play the piece on set , very well indeed. I suspect it was not used in the final version as the recording arena is too large.
@justlooseit8567 Ahh i see now - but Bogarde is still playing most of the right notes - in the shots where you can see his hands! Although it may have been dubbed with a "proper" pianist, who probably sounds better - Bogarde is still executing a technical ability which is amazing!! O.O
Check out my tribute to un sospiro on organ! I did it on organ because the end of Song Without End features organ and choir doing a rendition of un sospiro! I think it's better on organ than piano!
franz liszt, along with freddie mercury (especially in the seventies) are the most handsome and extraordinary - looking men i have ever seen... so its not surprising that they could not get someone @apt' enough for the role......
This movie might be nice to watch but the great Franz Liszt it does not do any justice. It includes, however, some very rare samples of the art of the great Jorge Bolet in younger years. He truly was a giant. (At 1:04 the final pages of the second hungarian rhapsody start.)
He was excellent in all his films. I don't know why they aren't shown more on cable. He was very underrated, and had that brooding introspection that made Clift and Dean so iconic.
I loved him in Tale of Two Cities, which was the first film I ever saw in on Turner Classic Movies. I've also tried looking for his film; Cast a Dark Shadow, but nobody has it, not even Block Buster Video or Netflix has it. I just saw his other film Darling which was available at Block Buster.
It looks like a pretty poor movie. You're right he looks more like Chopin, also this looks nothing like the character and style of player Liszt would have been. Where is the melodrama and showmanship? Consign this movie to the rubbish bin.
we can hear great Bolet in his heyday. his technique and color is absolutely superior to Decca years. fortunately the same performance used as soundtrack was released in cd on Bescol label (with Robert Irving and Symphony of Air). you may be able to buy it at Amazon.
I have never seen an actor performs so well on the keyboard as if he is a real pianist. Sometimes I wonder if Bogarde really know how to play piano or else he must have spend a lot of time to prepare for the shooting. Bravo!
In his(first)autobiography it states he had approx 5 weeks to learn 85 minutes of concert quality playing, even with the worlds best teachers at his disposal he failed to learn anything at all useful so instead opted just to copy their hand movements without actually learning a single note!
Of course that's the best way to do this, the most talented person spends some years to be able to play just the notes!Great work of Bogarde, only a pianist would notice it
The best job iv'e ever seen of an actor do mock piano playing-he's always in the right registers and hand placement.Dirk probally played a little bit actually.
Dirk was hopelessly un co-ordinated,and in his own words said "I cant play tennis, cricket or even a mouth -organ!" with no musical epxperience at all he carefully matched his teachers hand movements only without learning any of the notes, basically 'acting' his way out of it which is what he was undoubtedly best at. His 'playing' has convinced many.
The Piano was played by Cuban Concert Pianist Jorges Bolet, I think Dirk Bogarde did a tremendous job synchronising, I saw the Film over and over in my early teens... it's a classic for me.
muy buen actor, pero le faltan octavas a ese piano!

Had you read the description, you'd know Bolet was the one who played the piano, with Bogarde acting.
Wonderful playing though:P

This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written to me (Liebestraume no.3). The other one is E flat nocturne by Chopin.
maxi937 3 years ago
@maxi937 Actually the other one is Liszt´s Hungarian Rhapsody #2.

I just discovered Dirk Bogarde for the first time last week in the film Tale of Two Cities from 1958. He was excellent in it.

Some reviews say that it's Jorge Boyet playing on the soundtrack. Mr. Bogarde is still magnificent - his piano playing looks _very_ real.
