  • I have this guy's first LP that he cut when he was only 19 years old. It was recorded late one night at the studios of WBER Radio in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Produced and Engineered by Clarence Jackson (ole Buttermilk and Green Onions), part owner of WBER.

  • This guy is NO Joke!!! I seen him twice and and that banjo dont stop smokn'!!!

  • what 13 boneheads hit "dislike"?

  • The boss!!!!!!

  • thus drink his moonshine and become banjo players like me and him :P

  • I have seen Raymond play in person at Bluegrass Festivals years ago and he is the greatest. Smokey Mountain music for sure.

  • I went to his theatre in Maggie VAlley NC.. . jeeze, I've been in better barns.. He was quite old by the time I saw him some 11 years ago..

  • he owned that banjo

  • The greatest banjer picker 2 EVER lace up a banjer!!!!!

  • HOLY SHIT that was incredible O_o

  • @Hyronias you're right. HOLY SHIT!! i'm a self confessed slayer, rammstien, slipknot metal head. this guy is fuckin GREAT

  • Raymond is still awesome. Just saw him play at the Maggie Valley Opry House in North Carolina. You shoulda been there ladies and gents! Yesssssss.....................

  • And not a fuck was given that day!

  • my first crush? Raymond Fairchild.....I was hmmm I guess 12 and saw him on the Blue Ridge Parkway on the side of the road.....true love....love at first sight....do I have good taste or what?....(not going to tell you about the time I had my mini weener dog humpin a Pit Bull to this tune...oh yeah, it really happened and was so funny it should be outlawed! that weenie dog had such control*L* it about killed my friend who owned the Pit Bull......Heather and Claire forever!) I set her up good!

  • Reverse-Swastika, bottom left @ 1:05 :P

  • Best musician I've ever seen .... and I'm glad he doesn't smile when he's performing .... I ONLY want to concentrate on his pickin'.

  • Watching Raymond pick the banjo is a spiritual experience. There's more musicianship in him alone than in a stage crammed full of other "good" musicians all playing at the same time. You rock Raymond!!!!!!

  • Lmfao x3

  • this is way better then todays technoo

  • cocaine's a helluva drug!

  • bluegrass just puts a smile on your face :D

  • this made me lol xD

  • Whoa!

  • WHOOOOAAAAAAH!!!!!

  • tony rice unit comes to the watseka theatre watseka illinois on may 7, 2011

  • that´s the most amazing thing i´ve ever seen!!

  • What a shame he has such contemp for his audience by not even trying to smile, or be happy about what he's presenting them, much less the joy of the music itself. Yes, he's as talented as they come, but it puts out kind of a sour note to the music. I felt like apologizing to him for listening to it, given that expression on his face.

  • @chettmansberger He doesn't have contempt for his audience he is serious about his music and not full of BS like you so get over yourself. Raymond doesn't need you or anyone else to apologize for him. What you see is what you get. He is the genuine article not unlike most of these players today..

  • @chettmansberger You obviously have no clue as to how bluegrass shows work. This is a side gag he does. Go look up the Stoneman family doing Cripple Creek. Ronnie Stoneman doesnt move, dance, or smile while she plays it. It is just a play on the complexity of the song. Raymond tells stories when he plays ALL THE TIME, and cuts up with those watching. Explore a bit more before you make such a post. It makes you appear very uneducated and will surely get you the verbal beat down your getting.

  • @Rcksaltnnails

Thank you for your response, and I appreciate the updated information you provided regarding his performance style. I also truly hope you'll be a little kinder in the future do people who simply don't know the facts. Many thanks, and let's now simply enjoy his great music! My North Carolina relatives will be happy at that thought (a common phrase from them... "not country music, Mountain Music! LOL) . Good thoughts,

    Christina

  • better then dragonforce!

  • Not only did he not miss a beat, I'm pretty danged sure he throwed in a couple of extras! Yee Haw!!!

  • Wuooow..!!

  • 11 person was here to see him smiling...

  • This is a man playing a banjo.

  • WTF never heard it like that this rules like fuck

  • Superb.

  • This music makes me smile even when I'm in the worst of moods. That's why I love it. It's some of the most skillful ear pleasing sound in the world and beyond.

  • If you haven't you need to visit him in Maggie Valley, NC. Fine fellow and one helluva banjo picker. And he picked this at the last show I went to.

  • Now this is some awesome banjo playing!

  • He's awesome!!

  • this is one of the coolest things i've ever seen...i can't get over how insanely good this is (well, i don't want to!)

  • Herman Li has NOTHING on this man.

  • damn he's superb at banjo

  • That single string stuff is hard.

  • i think banjo is THE Instrument whon takes the most practice its really hard to play

  • @kjsh987 Raymond is related to wild bill hickok. True story! In some of the videos of raymond with his mustache you can see a resemblance.

  • I want to learn the banjo. All I'd ever do is wait for someone to chase someone in town and play this while chasing after them

  • awesome skill, but why so serious? here ,have some moonshine :D

  • Excellent Performance! He plays at a very fast beat... I would say faster than normal but Banjos do sound better when thay are played faster...

  • yes !

  • Put this guy on a guitar and we have a metal god! lol

  • take that dragonforce!

  • @rockorsario Cool thing is that this is a pretty standard tempo for a lot of bluegrass banjo players. He does have some pretty interesting techniques.

  • @rockorsario lolz ! true

  • I love the stoic demeanour. What? Me smile?

  • never really listened to bluegrass but this vid can put a smile on anyone's face :)

Is it just me or are the double bass and guitar pretty much inaudible?

  • I have to agree with 143601 and FickJalchLiebeKiffen... I'm a metal fan, but bluegrass is some true thrash... any good bluegrass musician could tear up a steel guitar

  • This was really impressive and cool but I have an irrational dislike of this man simply because he looks like a young Fred Phelps.

    I'm sorry :(

  • Holly Moly - Best Banjo Player I've ever heard . RESPECT !

  • van halen of bluegrass!

  • Excellent!!!

  • Love it!!!

  • Raymond always had a great original style and touch--not to mention great drive and a an equally great 'bag of tricks'!

  • HELL YEAH !

  • awesome playing. Love bluegrass!

  • That was fucking awesome!!

  • Damn...

  • very nice! I want to do that:P

  • Oh, but look at his face. Such a stern expression.

  • That kids, is called complete mastery of a set of banjo strings!

  • @therebel1960 I disagree. Much of that I CAN do on the banjo and I just play at home. Raymond seems to have a dash of Scruggs and good helping of Don Reno and the rest is just goofing off on the strings. Sorry but I just don't get into it. Maybe a song or two, but I could listen to Flatt and Scrugg or Reno and Smiley or Ralph Stanley for hours. Sorry.

  • @boblackey1 I don't totally agree with your assessment of Raymond, but he is showing off in this number. I do agree with being able to listen to Flatt and Scruggs for sure. I did like Don Reno, but I'm not as high on him as I am toward Earl. All three are winners in my book.

  • is he god?

  • is it just me or does he look just like harvey kietel of resevoir dogs lol

  • @95same TRUE

  • OMGGGG !

  • Yyyyyyyyyyyyyiiiiiiiiiiiiijaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
