I have this guy's first LP that he cut when he was only 19 years old. It was recorded late one night at the studios of WBER Radio in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Produced and Engineered by Clarence Jackson (ole Buttermilk and Green Onions), part owner of WBER.
answers? anyone? buler? buler? HAY jimi, yah you, right there in the back row. i hear you're pretty good. stand up and give us something. no?? you don't wanna volenteer? how bout you Mr Claption?
Raymond is still awesome. Just saw him play at the Maggie Valley Opry House in North Carolina. You shoulda been there ladies and gents! Yesssssss.....................
my first crush? Raymond Fairchild.....I was hmmm I guess 12 and saw him on the Blue Ridge Parkway on the side of the road.....true love....love at first sight....do I have good taste or what?....(not going to tell you about the time I had my mini weener dog humpin a Pit Bull to this tune...oh yeah, it really happened and was so funny it should be outlawed! that weenie dog had such control*L* it about killed my friend who owned the Pit Bull......Heather and Claire forever!) I set her up good!
Watching Raymond pick the banjo is a spiritual experience. There's more musicianship in him alone than in a stage crammed full of other "good" musicians all playing at the same time. You rock Raymond!!!!!!
What a shame he has such contemp for his audience by not even trying to smile, or be happy about what he's presenting them, much less the joy of the music itself. Yes, he's as talented as they come, but it puts out kind of a sour note to the music. I felt like apologizing to him for listening to it, given that expression on his face.
@chettmansberger He doesn't have contempt for his audience he is serious about his music and not full of BS like you so get over yourself. Raymond doesn't need you or anyone else to apologize for him. What you see is what you get. He is the genuine article not unlike most of these players today..
@chettmansberger You obviously have no clue as to how bluegrass shows work. This is a side gag he does. Go look up the Stoneman family doing Cripple Creek. Ronnie Stoneman doesnt move, dance, or smile while she plays it. It is just a play on the complexity of the song. Raymond tells stories when he plays ALL THE TIME, and cuts up with those watching. Explore a bit more before you make such a post. It makes you appear very uneducated and will surely get you the verbal beat down your getting.
Thank you for your response, and I appreciate the updated information you provided regarding his performance style. I also truly hope you'll be a little kinder in the future do people who simply don't know the facts. Many thanks, and let's now simply enjoy his great music! My North Carolina relatives will be happy at that thought (a common phrase from them... "not country music, Mountain Music! LOL) . Good thoughts,
This music makes me smile even when I'm in the worst of moods. That's why I love it. It's some of the most skillful ear pleasing sound in the world and beyond.
@rockorsario Cool thing is that this is a pretty standard tempo for a lot of bluegrass banjo players. He does have some pretty interesting techniques.
I have to agree with 143601 and FickJalchLiebeKiffen... I'm a metal fan, but bluegrass is some true thrash... any good bluegrass musician could tear up a steel guitar
I have to agree with 143601 and FickJalchLiebeKiffen... I'm a metal fan, but bluegrass is some true thrash... any good bluegrass musician could tear up a steel guitar
@therebel1960 I disagree. Much of that I CAN do on the banjo and I just play at home. Raymond seems to have a dash of Scruggs and good helping of Don Reno and the rest is just goofing off on the strings. Sorry but I just don't get into it. Maybe a song or two, but I could listen to Flatt and Scrugg or Reno and Smiley or Ralph Stanley for hours. Sorry.
@boblackey1 I don't totally agree with your assessment of Raymond, but he is showing off in this number. I do agree with being able to listen to Flatt and Scruggs for sure. I did like Don Reno, but I'm not as high on him as I am toward Earl. All three are winners in my book.
