@jacobisraelforever my grandmothers maiden name was McLoughlin which i know is a coat of arms because she had a huge picture (more a poster) in her basement of a ton of coat of arms and she had it actually on a plaque in the bathroom but i recognize the name O'Halloran also from that poster <@SeamusMochi
@xsophia97x Nah, not really. Truth be told, I'm more ashamed of my countrymen and their behaviour and sense of entitlement. We're all the same under God's eyes.
I remember my schoolfriends thinking I was mad for liking this when I first heard it back in the late 60s. I've liked it ever since. I didn't realise at the time that I am of Irish descent, on my paternal Great-grandfather's side. He came from Dublin and settled in London as a young man, and died before WW1. Thanks for posting, darrin42. I'll never tire of hearing this song!
What's a good Dubliners collection? I love their music and I'm looking to pick up at least a compilation of some sort with all the stone-cold classics.
I bought 4 of the Dubliners Cd in the Dublin airport on my way to Iraq. All my buddies thought that I was crazy. By the time we left that shit hole country, they had put the cd onto their computers. Proud of my Irish heritage. Great music

Awww this reminds me of my grandfather! He use to sing this to me all the time as a child. He was born in Ireland and came to America in 1930. He sang so many Irish folk songs to me but this one was always my fav. Love & miss him soo much :(
I heard this on the radio today & it took me back to my lunchtimes in an Irish bar in Birkenhead when I was first kissed by a "real" woman....(who was the owners daughter...) Long time ago now....
I think you misunderstood me. Of course I know that Belfast is in Northern Ireland. My remark was addressed to a previous comment, which stated that this song was from Norfolk, England. Loveee this song it reminds me of when my grandad used to colect me from school and he used to have this tape with all 60's songs on..:D and luke kelly...and it brings back memories love youuu Ireland x
Great stuff! I'm playing a Patty's Day gig on Tuesday and I've been using this exact version that you posted to learn this song. Out of all the tunes I'm doing I think this is my favorite... Thanks!
A classic no doubt and this is a good version. I just heard it on the radio and it was with the entire live audience singing along on the choruses and that's what I'm looking for on youtube. Live Dubliners.
The Dropkick Murphys does rock mainly, playing this song with an electric guitar just sounds streamy and depressing, so there's not much to offend, since, they can't help it.
@KnoxYouth The Dropkicks are fun and they are what they are, but I don't think that anyone in the band would argue for a second that they can match the magisterial brilliance of Ronnie Drew or Luke Kelly. Their hearts are in the right place and they've got the right spirit, of course, and their rendition is just as valid, but it's sort of like putting the best of modern tech against a classic. There's nothing wrong with it, but there's magic here that just can't be recaptured. It's indefinable.
@hanshotfirst1138 Incidentally, the Murphy's version of this song is the most-played song I have at the moment in my iTunes account. I love their rendition, and I'm in no way knocking it at all.
@hanshotfirst1138 no their heart is not in the right place an Irish rapper Rob Kelly sampled "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" and they made him take it down because he did no t pay royalties yet they did the same thing by taking traditional irish music.
This is the irish spirit! Many greetings from Greece!
