Have you ever heard "Big Town Boy" by Shirley Matthews & the Big Town Girls? Shirley was also from Ontario and her song reached #4 on CHUM radio in Toronto in 1964. It's a good doo-wop "girl group" tune that I think would be perfect for you!
@jrs1010 sorry about the multiple posts Nothing happened the first time I tried to post this, and You Tube said it wasn't going through. Then I come back today, and find that I somehow posted the same message four times. Go figure ! :(

I love the voice of the girl singing lead , though you switch throughout your songs , the girl who sings lead on "Can you feel the love tonight" is amazing, but the cute little redhead is just so sweet :)
The Doo Wop era came to a halt in 1964 with the arrival of the Beatles in t he USA. This song came much later. If it been sung in 1963, I'm certain that Bruce Hamby would have been elevated to to the status of "pop hit song-writer," the Four Quarters would have become the primary rivals of the Chordettes, and Catherine Helferty would have achieved enough fame to have become a household name. Instead, we are indebted to Kevin McSheffrey for this great throwback tribute to a bygone era.
@Jazzbeu55 I agree entirely with what you say, and have been "singing the praises" of the Four Quarters to all my friends in the music business. But personally, I wouldn't mention the Chordettes. To me, they were not doo-wop, but a 50s (pre-rock) pop group. Doo-wop is a part of rock 'n' roll. For me, the Four Quarters recall the sound of the great New York and New Jersey doo-wop girl groups of the early 60s - especially the Angels, Chantels, Shirelles, Crystals, Chiffons, etc.
@jrs1010 I will concede that you are right about the Chordettes. They were more a doo wop era pop group than a true doo wop group. The groups you mention are all better examples. Still, the Four Quarters, with the wide variety of music they sing. are a bit more like the Chordettes than the groups the other groups mentioned. In the unlikely event they were to go professional, they would do well to model themselves after either the Chordettes or perhaps England's All Angels.
@Jazzbeu55 Being a doo-wop fan, at first I thought you were talking about the Earth Angels, a Spanish male doo-wop group that has been doing quite well recently.(They have made successful appearances in American rock 'n' roll "oldies" shows.) But now I see that there is also a British female vocal group called the All Angels that does classical cross-over or "operatic pop". Perhaps the Four Quarters are actually sort of a hybrid between the two!
@jrs1010 The Four Quarters were originally organized to be a general purpose quartet and just sort of stumble into doo wop when they got a strong response on one of their videos. They probably would do well in that hybrid territory performing some former pop tunes.
You girls are AMAZING! I live in New York and I am a big doo wop fan. You sound GREAT!!! If you ever come to New York to perform please let me know. I hope to hear more great doo wop from you in the future. Keep doing your thing girls!!!
I must say Ladies, whenever I want to relax and enjoy some beautiful and talented singing, I definitely make a stop at YOUR SITE on YouTube! Thanks for sharing your talents with the world. If I may ask, are you all in college together, and how did you come to form your singing group? I still look forward to hearing you lovely ladies do a cover version of "Crazy Love" by Van Morrison!
I previously commented on Catherine's fabulous lead and Kevin's arrangement, but I never gave Bruce Hamby the credit he deserves as the songwriter. Bruce, if you had written this 50 years earlier, it would have been at the top of the charts! I strive to be an unofficial historian of the Four Quarters. In that role, I will tell you that this song is second in importance for your success only to the Doo Wop medley in the stairwell. When you needed a "hit" Bruce, Kevin & Catherine delivered
The Four Quarters CD, "A Pocket Full of Change" was released yesterday by Crystal Ball Records. Based on the information shown on the company's website, this song is on the CD.
Lovely ladies, I've spent the last couple of days watching your outstanding and generous talent wonderfully captured on video for our enlightenment and entertainment, and am an instant, appreciative fan. All my years as an accompanist, I recognize your pure tone and evident enthusiasm and professionalism, and I applaud you. Congratulations! Very much looking forward to your recording and hopefully lucky to acquire one immediately. All my best wishes for your future endeavors! - John Campos
Bruce, you write fantastic songs. What a great honor for you to have these little angels sing your music! I too am a songwriter and to hear these girls sing one of my songs would be sublime. I cannot wait for the upcoming C.D.! Girls? Please keep it together and continue to bless us, your fans, with your beautiful singing and gorgeous harmonies! You are appreciated.
You girls are really amazing, such range and a real feel for what you are singing. I grew up in the doo wop days and you would have been tops back then. Keep up the super fine work. You really need to do your own CD.
I've listened to this and your other videos several times, and must say I can't get enough! This is the only video I see Catherine singing lead. She really does it up right! I hope to see more songs with Catherine up front in the future. Of course, all 4 of you are equally talented.
@musicaldolphin1 I'll give you some help in finding Catherine's best songs. Catherine sings a lead solo in Winter Wonderland and on the last verse of Just the Way You Are. She is frequently the lead melody singer when the group goes into straight 4 part harmony--too many to list there. Be sure to check out Over the Rainbow. It is her voice breaking over the top of the harmonies that gives the number its heavenly effect. Her voice is also a powerful presence in the Amazing Grace octet.
@meloyellowduck All 4 have strengths as a lead. Catherine has the rich and powerful soprano voice. She can go loud over backgrounds with ease. She's best on "standards." Rachel has a great lead voice for doo wop songs, especially if the background is soft. Sarah has a more exotic voice well suited for songs like "Teenager in Love". Lindsay's vocal range is from the basement to the stratosphere. Because of her value to the group as an alto, we don't hear enough of her pretty lead voice.
@musicaldolphin1 Thanks for pointing that out. Lindsay does a nice job with Rhythm of the Rain despite a rushed holiday rehearsal schedule. The group came home for Christmas and tried to do as much as they could for their fans in a few days. She also has lead solos in Can You Feel the Love and Sounds of Silence. Lindsay is can sing either soprano or alto effectively. In baseball terms, she is a utility infielder with a batting average of .350
wow! another great Doo Wop harmony from you girls! I bought the cd Doo Wopin Around the World an i think you girls should compile a cd of your own. Not that i disliked the cd, i just would rather hear more from The Four Quarters. Hope to hear more tunes in the future!
awesome to see new stuff. Rachel reminds me of hannah murray alot. cant wait to hear more new stuff. would still love to hear a harmony of strange and beautiful, that would be amazing.
Lindsay, the purple sweater was just fine. It was just less colorful than what the others were wearing. In American male quartets, a bass singer who frequently sings funny sounds and only two real words in a song figures he is entitled to his own style and a bit of "attitude". You often have that role here. They way you sing the alto part, you could wear scuba diving gear and we would accept it. Heck, you wore a "Carwash" dress and your fans still love you! Relax and just be yourself!
It is so good to hear well rehearsed summer videos that don't have to be rushed out there during a short holiday. Kevin and Catherine both get credit for home runs this time. Background harmonies were balanced and clean. With so much talent in one group, you have to experiment and try a lot of different configurations in using your singers. Pushing forward the tall blonde with the voice and face of an angel and using 3 pretty brunettes as her back-ups is a winning configuration. Very nice!
You're back with a video finally*.* I love you all!!!!!! (Above all the blonde solo voice (i forgot her name :P )so good and so beautiful (as everyone of you indeed ;P)).
Greetings from Italy!!! Every song an emotion!! :)
How would you like to be a baseball manager who has players that can field well, hit for average and power, pitch, and play any position? That's what ol' professor McSheffrey has; every member of The Four Quarters can sing lead, backup, harmony, carry the beat, and be beautiful as well. Throw in a skilled songwriter like Bruce Hamby and you have a Championship Team. Great to see The Four Quarters back from college. Get out the tape measure, Catherine knocked this one out of the park!
